The Voice

Happy December! The end of the year is just around the

corner—the single biggest fundraising opportunity of the

year. From Thanksgiving to New Year’s Eve, American

generosity skyrockets, causing people to support causes

they care about most. Even though fundraising happens

year-round, every fundraiser knows the importance of these

statistics:

30% of all annual donations occur in December

12% of all annual donations occur on the last 3 days of

the year

Donors get involved with nonprofits around the holidays for

four primary reasons:

To be happier by helping others in need

To feel good about themselves by making a difference

To be connected to something positive, experience a

sense of belonging

To take advantage of tax deductions

Recently, a colleague asked me: “What advice would you

give to someone considering a career in fundraising?” With

31+ years being a “professional beggar” everyone assumes

that I had been fundraising since childhood or that

fundraising was my first chosen profession. Neither is true; I

didn’t participate in the Mother’s March or sell Girl Scout

cookies and my first job was as a legal secretary. I was

literally a “drop-out” in my first fundraising experience. In

high school chorus we were chosen to perform in New York

City BUT we had to raise funds to cover all travel expenses.

Guess what? I DROPPED OUT of chorus because I didn’t

want to ask people for money!

Fast forward to 2019 and here I am with $30 million “under my fundraising belt” for six well-respected, successful nonprofits—plus the opportunity to raise funds for NAMI Palm Beach County as a board member and volunteer. Where the chorus trip was about benefitting me, I learned that fundraising is NOT about me—but being able to connect a donor to an organization that changes their world.

IN A CRISIS

Mobile Response: Mobile Response provides emergency intervention, de-escalation, screening and assessment for

individuals who are in emotional distress. As a family member or close friend, you can call Mobile Response and

discuss the situation with them. They will help to determine the best course of action. It may involve them going to

the individual’s home to assess the situation. Based on the assessment, they may recommend community treatment,

or they can arrange to have the individual hospitalized. Mobile Response services are available 24 hours a day, 7 days

a week.

Mobile Response Units:

South County Mental Health Center Mobile Response (southern part of county): 561-637-2102;

(northern part of county): 561-693-8681; (Glades area): 561-382-3555

Calling 911: If you find that the situation has escalated to a point of crisis, call 911, describe your situation and ask for

a CIT-trained officer. The Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) completes a week-long training developed nationally by NAMI

and the police to improve responses to people in crisis. Many local officers have participated in this training.

Questions / Need Resources? When you are looking for support finding resources, or to develop a crisis contingency plan, you can call NAMI PBC’s

Family Resource Specialist at 561-588-3477. We are available during regular business hours to help you identify

resources within Palm Beach County.
