GUIDE TO 2015Need some fresh ideas? Look no further! H&A presents the key trends
for the year ahead and where to go for inspiration and great days out
Burnished metalsWHAT The cold glitz of last year’s Gatsby-inspired looks have taken on subtler, warmer tones.
WHY Thanks to the full refurbish-ment of the Hammersmith Apollo (including restoration of its original 1932 plasterwork), there’s a shiny art deco look around. We’ve also been inspired by Wilkinson’s Auc-tioneers sale of a sumptuous hoard of well-preserved metalware from a 16th-century wreck found off the Caribbean island of Hispaniola.
hOW Add burnished metals to airy living spaces. For ideas, take a look at Rockett St George for metallic tables (rockettstgeorge. com) or Colefax & Fowler’s new ‘Valentina’ velvets range
SHINE ONThere’s no beer way to give metal a warm sheen than by illuminating it with candle-light. The pewter and brass wall sconces below come in four sizes and prices start at £135. 01229 584537; thes-hopfloorproject.com
This unique bag is one of the rarest pieces in the Courtauld Gallery’s collection. It was made in Iraq in the 14th century from brass inlaid with gold and silver, and is now recognised as a lady’s bag. It will be on display at the Courtauld’s Court and Cra exhibition from 20th February. 020 7848 2526; courtauld.ac.uk

ChevronsWHAT Since spotting them at the London Design Festival, we can’t stop seeing chevrons… on walls, cushions, even saucepans – see Pretty Dandy’s vintage ‘Denby’ saucepan, £12.95 (prettydandy.co.uk).
WHY Unlike traditional stripes, chevrons add depth to any surface. They date back to the Greek pottery of 18th century BC. It’s amazing how trends come around…
HOW Keep your zigzags clean and bright. This is not a trend to overdo. Try making a brave statement in a plain room with the likes of Jennifer Manners’s bright rugs (below right, from £660).

Through the generationsJacqui Brooks has her grandmothers to thank for her loveof beautiful design – and her wonderfully eclectic home

Jacqui Brooks is toying with the idea of extending into her attic. Not because she wants a guest room or to enlarge the size of
the bedrooms but because the family business has gradually begun to take over the home that she shares with daughters Hollie (27) and Amelia (23). The trio launched MiaFleur, an online homeware boutique with a vintage focus, just over a year ago and, although the set-up sounds too good to be true, it’s something that Jacqui has dreamt about for as long as she can remember. ‘My paternal grandmother was a fine seamstress who made all her own clothes and soft furnishings and taught me to sew during my summer holidays, while my maternal grandmother’s home was a treasure trove of
beautiful objects and textiles,’ she explains. ‘They inspired me to forge a career in design – it was something that they would have loved for themselves.’Up until last year, Jacqui’s job was far less glam, working full-time for the family potato merchants business. But, with Amelia recently above The kitchen cupboards have been painted in Lile Greene’s ‘Salix’. ‘I bought the Ercol table over 30 years ago – it was my first kitchen table,’ says Jacqui. The quilt used as a tablecloth is from eBay top, right Amelia made the bowl when she was at school right Jacqui stores her quilting fabrics in a cupboard that she distressed.
A CLOSER LOOKcollecting vintage fabrics‘I love sewing and can always be found in my sewing room,’ says Jacqui. Her enviable collection of fabrics was bought from an-tiques centres across the country (although The Scoish Antique & Arts Centre in Doune is a favourite) and eBay. Instead of looking for designs from specific eras, she’s drawn to floral motifs and green, pink and yellow colourways.

graduating with a degree in textile de-sign (and Hollie with a degree in fashion and textile management under her belt) they decided it was time to go for it.
filled with memories
The influence of Jacqui’s grandmothers can be spotted throughout her home. The flower paintings in the garden room were collected because they reminded her of the designs owned by her mater-nal grandmother, while the brass and wood clock in the living room was one of the few things saved from her pater-nal grandmother’s bungalow when it was flooded. ‘For me, memories make a home,’ says Jacqui. ‘Be it objects passed down from family members, gifts from loved ones or simply items that remind
you of a holiday. That way, every time you look around, you’re reminded of happy times.’ Rather than being tied to a particular era, Jacqui is drawn to colour and form and has a weakness for anything old or beautifully made. ‘I prefer to buy vintage or items craft-ed by designer-makers as I love their individuality,’ she says.
‘I like things to have a story, even if I don’t know what it is.’ Jacqui’s most treasured belongings may speak of the past but this isn’t to say she isn’t afraid to take risks. When she moved here two years ago the house had been done up to sell – fireplaces were boarded up,
