AUGUSTEWALL MIRROR

Reflecting your happiness each day, in just the blink of an eye Auguste adorns you with the mischievous playfulness of children.

Your face is topped by a lovely pair of rabbit’s ears, just like the fingers of troublemakers who can’t resist doing this in photos.

Let Auguste remind you of magical tales.

A white rabbit?! Alice would tell you that a mirror is also a doorway of perception,

a door to elsewhere, where time is not the same as usual.

So, borrow his beautiful ears that are so proudly pricked up at the sight of you and bestow upon him a smile, your smile.

AUGUSTE [ɔguste] Proper name/ adjective / masculine noun. This name brings the perfect touch of pride, having been borrowed from the Roman Emperor Augustus.

1. “Augustus was born in 63 B.C., died in 14 A.D., and was the first Roman Emperor and the adopted son of Julius Caesar. He came to power during the civil wars that followed the assassination of his adopted father. He has left for posterity this image of a restorer of peace, prosperity and traditions; thanks to his friend and advisor Maecenas, his reign was characterised by a remarkable resurgence in arts and letters. To this day, the ‘Augustan’ period remains a towering cultural reference.

2. But it is also a reference to the cheekiness of the Auguste clowns of our childhood, colourful jokers who love making children roar with laughter.

Auguste is proud and playful.

ÉONWALL MIRROR

Sparkling Eon knows exactly what it is, just like the knight who shares its name.

The scales were inspired by his armour, to reflect its dual purpose – decoration and mirror... It reflects and

distorts the finery of its surroundings.

Bringing indoors what is more commonly found on the exterior of our homes, the colourful tiles remind us of the brightly coloured roofs seen in many parts of the world.

Its colours are inspired by the plumage of birds… Touraco, Martin-pêcheur, Francolin…

Page 10: Maisonnee catalogue 2014 /// English

ÉON [eɔ] Masculine noun / proper name. We wanted to illustrate all the ambivalence of this object by naming it after the Chevalier d’Eon (the Knight of Eon).

1. Charles-Geneviève-Louis-Auguste-André-Timothée d’Éon de Beaumont, known as the “Chevalier d’Éon”, 1728-1810, was a French author, diplomat and spy. He was famous for his clothing, which made him look like a woman. Yet, when he died, a council of doctors confirmed he was of male gender and perfectly endowed.

2. The Eon (Aeon) is also a measure of time, like an era. “The largest period of time on the geological scale”. For us, Eon is like an accumulation of strata, of layers that form a whole, and we also felt that this relationship with time and geology was apt.

Eon is made of strata and ambivalence.

HADÉENNECLOCK

Time passes, dies, and marks our existence, sometimes tolling, sometimes chiming the beauty in our lives:

it is the supreme element and Hadéenne is its instrument.

In the same way that we age, so its leather takes on a patina, becoming more beautiful as it is marked by the knowledge of life that moves on,

its wrinkles becoming the grooves that keep time.

Its face will help you decide when are the best times for splitting hairs and meeting someone halfway.

Hadéenne is the descendant of a long line of timepieces, taking inspiration from pocket watches, wrist watches and Comtoise clocks.

– 15 –

Page 16: Maisonnee catalogue 2014 /// English

HADÉENNE [adeɛn] Feminine noun. We wanted its design to reflect each passing second.

1. The Hadean was the first geological eon in the history of the Earth. It started with the creation of the Earth around 4,540 billion years ago, and ended when life first appeared, around 3,800 billion years ago. Hadean could therefore be described as the “babyhood” of the planet. The concordance between this period and the meaning of its namesake is a magnificent passing of the baton.

2. ADN: is the French for DNA, and is pronounced just like Hadéenne. DNA is a molecule present in all living cells which includes all the information needed an organism to develop and function. It is also the means of heredity as it is partly or fully transmitted during reproduction. It therefore contains genetic information and is the genome of living beings.

Hadéenne is a tool for measuring life.

L’IGNÉECANDLEHOLDER

The earth’s crust used as a candleholder, the dangerous and salutary magic of fire brought down to human size.

Innocent and calm white wax runs down to engulf the item and create a new, unique and random version.

The successive flows from each candle amplify the poetry of L’Ignée and make each one unique.

All you have to do is light the wick.

– 19 –

Page 20: Maisonnee catalogue 2014 /// English

L’IGNÉE [liɳe] Feminine noun. It comes from the central element of a candle and its light, the fire. 1. L’Ignée: From the Latin Igneus. What is on fire, blazing, in flames, burning, fiery.

2. L’Ignée’s poetry also stems from the successive layers of molten wax which accumulate as it is used. Creating lines of wax, the accumulation of strata from your dinner parties, your evenings, your lives.

L’Ignée is fiery.

COURTOISENIGHTLIGHT

Courtoise is a guide during the night. Its phosphorus accumulates the ambient light and the glow of its marbles illuminates your interior.

On a bedside table, strategically placed so that you can find your way at night,

or to keep the monsters out of your children’s bedrooms…

Watching over your nights, a gentle bubble of immaculate dreams tops this nightlight, as a metaphor for the expiatory

exhalation of dreams outside of the sleeping person.

Unless this is actually a regressive rewriting of blowing bubble gum as children?

Courtoise is valiant and performs her duty to perfection, showing herself to be elegant and with no need to hide away once day breaks.

Her magical and natural mechanism is eternal.

– 23 –

Page 24: Maisonnee catalogue 2014 /// English

COURTOISE [kuʀtwaz] adjective. It illustrates the nobility of our nightlight.

1. Courtois(e) : From the old French “cortois” meaning “who belongs to the court.” Derived from the old French “cort”, the place where the sovereign and his or her entourage resided.

2. Conforms to an ideal of chivalry. One who demonstrates distinction and politeness in manners, who speaks and acts with refined civility. In medieval literature, a highly codified representation of love placing the emphasis on the bonds of vassalage which bind the knight to the lady he serves.

Courtoise is elegant and refined.

RADEAUBEAKER

Water is a miracle and sometimes a mirage. The sparkling expanse alters its surroundings to allow us

to discover our own gallery of chimera.

If you take the time to observe Radeau as if you were at the water’s edge, you will sometimes see a bear there,

and sometimes a mouse, a cat, maybe even a frog! This charming illusion will keep a close eye on your beverage.

– 27 –

Page 28: Maisonnee catalogue 2014 /// English

RADEAU [ʀado] Masculine noun. Its name is derived from its potential as a container.

1. A “radeau” is a raft, a vessel that lies low in the water, often very basic, making it possible to sail or to reach solid land, sometimes under exceptional conditions such as a shipwreck.

2. Like the version shown in The Raft of the Medusa by Géricault Shipwrecked people board the vessel and hope to reach land again; surrounded by seawater, water is the saviour of man.

Radeau is a salutary utensil.

PATTEHÈRECOAT HOOK

The inanimate comes to life; a simple screw becomes an eye, offering your clothes the benevolence of these coat hooks.

By hook or by crook, it will look after your belongings.

Hang on it whatever takes your fancy - clothes, jewellery, tea towels – anything which should be

within arm’s reach in your daily life. The agile paws of these charming animals will take care of your things with their lives.

– 31 –

Page 32: Maisonnee catalogue 2014 /// English

PATTEHÈRE [patɛʀ] Feminine noun. We have invented a word that is made up of two animal words to create a homophone of the function of the object (patère being coat hook in French).

1. PATTE / Anatomy / meaning limb of a four-legged animal, a bird (other than birds of prey), or certain aquatic animals and insects.

2. HÈRE French word to designate a young fawn aged between six months and one year that is not yet a young stag Young deer that has not yet grown its first antlers.

Pattehère is a lovable beast of burden.

INNOCENTHAIR ELASTIC

Rabbits are a gentle trigger of childhood imagination. We have all learnt to read with stories where they are present

on every page; rabbits are innocence.

Clinging to your hair or around your wrist while waiting to climb upwards, he will make you smile

and elicit a complicit glance from your friends.

He is so lovable that you will never lose him; it will be a partnership for life.

Style your hair with a pair of friendly ears!

– 35 –

Page 36: Maisonnee catalogue 2014 /// English

INNOCENT [inɔsa] proper name / noun / adjective. The thing we wear highest on our bodies, the hair elastic, should show those around us how much integrity we have. No longer put your hands in the air, instead raise them as rabbit’s ears.

1. One who is not guilty of the thing he is suspected of. / One is who is not to blame for the events they are enduring. / One who is unaware of the realities of life: pure, unspoiled / simple of spirit: Naive, simple. With no ulterior motive: harmless.

So close to the possible connotation of a rabbit.

2. Innocent is a very common name in the Papal world. It is the incarnation of wisdom.

Innocent is above all suspicion
