The holiday season is a wonderful time to offer your time, skills, and resources to charitable causes, especially given that many businesses and organizations conduct special drives and donation programs around this time of year to serve communities in need. Here are three creative, budget-friendly ways to spread the holiday cheer:Find out which local supermarkets and stores are taking donations at the register for causes that you support. Many times, stores taking donations will offer you the option to add a few dollars to the total price of your purchases or round up to the nearest dollar amount. Make a point to shop at these places. Have in mind the total amount you want to donate over the season and keep track of every individual contribution to that goal.Turn your hobby or passion into gifts that brighten the world around you. For example, if you love knitting and make great scarves, sweaters, and blankets, commit to making a whole set and finding an organization that specializes in collecting these items for individuals in need. Love to cook? Contact local shelters and inquire about preparing a dish for residents. Be sure to find out the number of people you’d be cooking for and whether there are ingredient restrictions. Then, plan a dish that you can prepare easily by doubling or tripling your recipe, such as biscuits, brownies, or a large casserole. Turn your time and energy into service. For example, collaborate with a nearby library to offer a craft event or reading hour to kids, allowing parents to finish their holiday shopping. Volunteer at a local school to help teachers prepare their classrooms for the holiday break, as well as for the first day back to school after the holidays.

Three Creative Options for Giving This Holiday Season

Ingredients:4 lemons1 1-inch piece fresh ginger1 cup natural cane sugar1/2 cup fresh mint, chopped1 1/2 cups water

Instructions: Slice the lemons into thin slivers, leaving the peel on. Remove the seeds. Peel the ginger and slice into thin slivers. Add the ginger and lemon slivers to a saucepan along with the water and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer for 30 minutes. Pour in extra water if needed and add the sugar. Bring to a boil again, then reduce heat to simmer for 15 minutes. Turn the heat off and let stand for 5 minutes. Stir in the chopped mint and ladle the jam into a glass jar. Allow to cool before serving.
