IntroductionAcademicintegrityisintegraltoteachingandlearning.AtArizonaStateUniversity(ASU),wearecommittedtotheintegrityofourstudentsandthecredibilityandrigorofourdegreeprograms--bothon-campusandonline. Today,ASUOnlineservesnearly26,000studentsandhasgrownfromsixtoover100degreeprograms.Withthissignificantgrowthinonlinelearningcomeslegitimateconcernsregardingacademicintegrity,wherethereisaseparationoftimeanddistancebetweentheinstructorandstudent.Failuretomaintainacademicintegrityinouronlineprogramscanthreatentheuniversity’sreputation,accreditationstatusandthecontinuedgrowthofouronlineprogramofferings. Thefollowingreportdocumentssomeoftherealitiesofacademiccheatinginhighereducationandcatalogsmanyofthetoolsandtechniquesusedbytheuniversitytomaintainintegrityinouronlineprograms.
WhyStudentsCheatBeforewetrytocombatacademiccheating,wemustfirstexaminewhystudentscheat.Themostcommonreasonsstudentscheatarerelatedto“perceivednecessity”1andgenerallackofawarenessandunderstandingofacademicintegrity.Accordingtoa2009studypublishedintheJournalofBusinessEthics,researchersfoundthosewhoadmittedtocheating--whetherface-to-faceorinanon-lineenvironment--weremotivatedbya“desiretogetahead”morethananyotherfactor.2 Perceivednecessityentailsgeneralcollegepressures:timeconstraints,academiccompetitivenessandfearoffailureoracademicdisqualification.Thosewhoareshortontimeandmustearnacertaingradeonanassignmentorexamtomaintainacademicstandingaremorelikelytousetechnologytofindtheinformationtheyneedinahurry. Academicintegrityisablurryconceptformanycollegestudents,whichoftenleadstocheatingintheformofplagiarism.Whilesomestudentsblatantlyplagiarizebycopyingandpastingborrowedpassagesintowrittenassignments,itismorecommonthatplagiarismisunintentional.Oftenplagiarizingoccursbecausestudentsareunawarethatacitationisrequired,theydon’tknowhowtogivecreditforborrowedworkortheydon’tunderstandthatsummarizingorparaphrasingrequiresacitation. Themorestudentsarefocusedonextrinsicmotivationsthanintrinsic--thegenuinedesiretomastermaterial--themorelikelytheywillcheat.Byassistingbothface-to-facestudentsandonlinestudentstoseetheimportanceofunderstandingthematerialanditsvaluetotheirlearningprocess,wereducetheirinclinationtoengageindishonestbehaviors.3

HowStudentsCheatWiththeadventofonlineeducation,newmethodsofcheatinghaveevolved.BeforetheInternet,cheatingwasgenerallylimitedtoindividualincidentsusingmoretraditionalmethods(e.g.,cheatsheets,writingonhandsorarms).Today,technologyhasexpandedthereachofcheaters,allowingoutsidersintoclassroomsbothonlineandon-campus.Withmoreadvancedmethods(cellphones,onlineresourcesandorganizedand,
insomeinstances,for-profitcheating),thereisnolimittothelengthsstudentscangoto“makethegrade.” Companiesandfreelancersopenlyadvertisetheirservicestohelpstudentscheat,assumingstudents’identitiesandtakingentireonlinecoursesintheirplace.Withmorethansevenmillion4studentstakingatleastoneonlinecourse,therearemillionsofpotentialcustomers.Onecompany,NoNeedtoStudy,willtakeyouronlineclass,takeexamsandwriteessaysallforaheftypricetag--butstudentspayforit.InAugust,thecompanytoutedit“helped”2,127studentsandtook1,003tests.Anothercompany,ExecutiveAcademics,usesaremotetesttaker,hiddenduplicatescreensandsmartphonestoassiststudentswithtakingatest.

Althoughresearchshowscheatingisn’tnecessarilymorecommononlinethaninfacetofacesettings,itdoesrequiredifferentexternalmonitoringandprotocolstoensureacademicintegrity.
EssayMillsandStudyServicesCollegetermpaper,dissertationsandtheseswritingservices(alsoknownasessaymillsorpapermills)datebacktothe1940sintheU.S.Thenumberandavailabilityoftheseservicesexpandedgreatlyinthe1970’s.Withtheadventofonlinecoursesandtheinternet,essaymillswereeveneasiertolocateanduse.56Whilesomestatesdohavelawsdesignedtocurbtheproliferationofessaymills,theyseemtohavehadlittleeffect.7 Theironyisthatmanyoftheseessaymillsproduceunusablecontent.DanAirely,aDukeUniversityprofessorandresearcher,conductedanexperimentwherehehiredfourdifferentessaywritingservicestocreatea12-pagetermpaper.Whathereceivedamountedtogibberish.8Nonetheless,concernsabouttheseservicescontinueandmeasuresshouldbetakentolimittheireffectiveness.Thefollowingaretechniquesfacultycanemployforthispurpose,someofwhicharealsomentionedbelowunderpedagogicalstrategies:9 Createassignmentsthatarecloselytiedtothecourselectures,discussionsandreadings.

Anotherresourceisstudyservicesthatselllecturenotes,testquestions,papersandothercourse-relatedmaterials.Inrecentyears,facultyhavebeenalarmedtofindASUcoursematerialsavailableatsomeoftheseservices.Whileitispossibleinsomecasestohavethematerialremovedfollowingceaseanddesistletters,stemmingthetideofcontentismorethanmostcanmanage.Plus,iftheuniversityorfacultycannotprovecopyrightownership,“studyservices”maintaintheyhavealegalrighttodistributethem. Thestrategiesfordealingwithessaymillsapplyto“studyservices”aswell.Generally,thegoalistomakecheatingunnecessaryandunattractivebycreatingpedagogicallysoundcoursedesign.Hereareafewadditionaltipstoconsider:10 1. Givestudentscopiesofoldtestsasstudyguides. 2. Changetestquestions,discussionpromptsandassignmenttopicseachterm. 3. Giveopen-bookexams.
Onlinevs.On-GroundCheatinghasexistedsincetheintroductionoftests.Nonetheless,onlinecourseworkpresentsanemerginganduniquechallengethatwedonotfacewithon-campuscourses.Howmuchdoescheatingonlinedifferfromon-campus? Thebestavailableresearchsuggeststhatcheatingiscomparableacrosslearningmodalities.A2010studybyMarshallUniversity,forexample,focusedonthecheatingbehaviorsof635undergraduateandgraduatestudentsinbothon-campusandonlinecourses.Thefindingsshowedtherewerenosignificantdifferencesinself-admittedcheating.Ofthosewhoadmittedtocheating,32.7%admittedtoonlinecheatingand32.1%admittedtocheatinginaliveclass.11Thesefindingsaresimilartoothersinthecomparisonofonlineversustraditionalclasses.1213 Althoughtheresultsofthesestudiessuggestasimilarpropensitytocheatacrossmodalities,thereisahighercorrelationofonlinecheatingwhenthereis“relativeanonymityandseparationbetweeninstructorandstudent.”14Thoseuniversitieswithstrongonlinecommunitiesdramaticallyincreaseonlinestudents’connectiontotheuniversity.WiththelaunchoftheASUOnlineStudentSuccessCenter,ouronlinestudentswillhaveinteractive,individualizedsupportallowingthemtodiscusscareerandpersonalgoalstodriveaffinitywiththeuniversityandimproveretention.

ASUStrategiesforAcademicIntegrity
IdentityVerificationHowdoweknowthattheonlinestudentsarewhotheysaytheyare?SincetheHigherEducationOpportunityActof2008,academicinstitutionsreceivingTitleIVfundingarerequiredtoverifytheidentitiesofitsenrolledonlineeducationstudents.Studentidentityauthenticationisnecessarytoensurestudentidentityandprotecttheuniversityfrominstitutionalliability. ThefollowingaresomeoftheIDtoolsASUcurrentlyusesorispiloting: ASURITE–TheASURITEsinglesign-onusernameandpasswordprovidesaccesstomanyASUsystems,includingtheBlackboardLearningManagementSystem.AllASUstudentsreceiveanASURITEaccountwhichactsasthefoundationforelectronicidentityverificationattheuniversity. AcxiomChallengeQuestions–AcxiomisaverificationtoolusedpriortoexamsinBlackboard.WithAcxiom,challengequestionsbasedonpublicrecordsarepresentedtostudentsasawayofconfirmingtheiridentity.ThetoolwasfirstusedinASUOnlineasastand-alonefeatureandwasthenincorporatedintotheProctorUproctoringprocess. KeyTracKeyboardBiometrics–KeyTracisusedtorecordtypingbehaviorforastudentprofile.Thetoolisthenusedpriortoexams(orrandomlythroughoutacourse)toverifyidentityagainsttherecordedprofile.AccordingtoKeyTrac,onaverage,onlytwopeoplein10,000haveasimilartypingbehavior.ThetoolwasfirstusedinASUOnlineasastand-alonefeatureandwasthenincorporatedintotheProctorUproctoringprocess. ProctorUUCardIdentityProfile–ASUOnlineconductedapilotusingtheProctorUUCardidentityverificationprofiletool.Forthepilot,5,000studentsrecordedidentityprofileswithaheadshotphoto,governmentissuedIDcapture,AcxiomchallengequestionsandKeyTrackeyboardbiometrics.Theprofilewasthenusedforverificationpurposespriortoexams.Theprofilecouldalsobeusedrandomlythroughoutcoursestocheckidentity.TheUCardpilotiscurrentlyonhold,buttheexperimentestablishedthepotentialforimplementingasystemlikethiswithonlinecampusstudents. RPNowbySoftwareSecure–RPNowistheprimaryproctoringserviceforonlineexamsatASU.Foridentityverificationpurposes,RPNowusesASURITE,aheadshotphotoandgovernmentissued(orASUSunCard)capture.ItcombinesconveniencewiththeassuranceofcatchinganyviolationsofexamintegritybyusingSoftwareSecure’srecordandreviewmodel.Thiscombinationleadstothemostcost-effectivemethodofensuringprogramintegrityonthemarketthatbestmeetstheneedsofstudents.edXhasbeenusingRPNowsince2015forGFAcoursework. DuoMobile-ASUrecentlyimplementedthetwo-factoridentityauthenticationtoolDuoMobile,whichusesadevicesuchasamobilephoneortablettoprovideasecondformofverificationinadditiontotheASURITEusernameandpassword.Currently,DuoMobileisnotrequiredforstudents,butEdPlusisevaluatingthepossibilitiesforusingtheprocessforonlinecourseaccess.Moreinformationabouttheprogram.

EdPlusiscurrentplanningpilotsforthefollowingidentityverificationproducts: TrueKeybyIntel–TrueKeyusesafaciallogandfingerprintanalysisforidentificationandaccesstowebsitesandappsacrossdevices. UsherMobileIdentityPlatformbyMicroStrategy–Usherusesmulti-factorauthenticationwiththenativedevicecapabilitiesofsmartphones,includingbiometricfingerprinttechnology.
SafeguardingExamsAlthoughtheemphasisontechnologyasitrelatestoacademicintegritytendstofocusonthenegative,technologyishavingapositiveimpact,creatingmoresophisticated,customizedonlineexamsthatpreventcheating. ThefollowingaretechnologiesASUiscurrentlyutilizingtoprotectagainstacademicdishonesty.
AcademicIntegrityFeaturesinBlackboardThefollowingisalistofmanyofthefeaturesintheBlackboardLearningManagementSystemthathelppreventcheatinginonlinequizzesandexams.ASUfacultyroutinelyusemultiplefeaturesforeachexam.
1. Randomizetestquestionsfromlargequestionpools.2. Showoneexamquestionatatime.3. Prohibitbacktrackinginexams.4. Setavailabilitydatesforexams.5. Settimelimitsonexams.6. Passwordprotectexams.7. Trackthetimeanddurationofexamaccess.8. Randomizetheanswersformultiplechoiceexamquestions.9. Limitthetypesoffeedbackshowntostudentsafterexamcompletion.10. AskstudentstoacknowledgetheirawarenessofASU’sAcademicIntegrityPolicyaspartofexamsor

Asmentionedearlier,theASURITEusernameandpasswordisusedbyallstudentstogainaccesstotheBlackboardsystem.Facultyandacademicunitscanalsoelecttousetheaboveproctoringserviceduringexams(SoftwareSecureRPNow,ProctorU,RespondusMonitor).

ExamProctoringOnlineproctoringisanimportantmarkerforonlineacademicintegrityandcredibility.ThedramaticincreaseintheuseofexamproctoringinonlinecourseshasledtothehiringofanASUOnlineProctoringCoordinatorinFall2016.Theproctoringcoordinatorwillmanageproctoringtoolsandservicesusedinonlineprogramcourses,aswellasiCourses. ASUfacultyanddepartmentscurrentlyuseanumberofdifferentproctoringservicestoprotecttheintegrityofonlineexams,including: ProctorU ASUOnlineconductedapilottestofProctorUin2010,whichledtofullusebymostoftheuniversity.ProctorUprovidesliveremoteproctoring,whereatrainedproctorcanmonitoruptosixexamsfromaproctoringcenter(locatedinArizona,Texas,CaliforniaorAlabama).AgovernmentissuedphotoID(orASUSunCard),headshotphoto,challengequestionsandkeystrokebiometricsareusedformultifactoridentityverification.Theproctorsworktointervenewhenstudentsviolateproctoringguidelinesduringexamsandflagincidentsforreportsthataredeliveredtofaculty.
