Grand Knight’s Message
Since our last edition of the Mainsail, our Council
has accomplished many activities and projects. I could
talk about each one of them, because I’m so proud of all
that we accomplish. But I’m here to say I want to chal-
lenge all my Brothers to join in on as many activities as
they can. I realize we all have time commitments that
don’t allow us to participate, but the reward for partici-
pation in the Council’s projects is the feeling of helping
someone who needs some support, whether it is mone-
tarily or physically. When we serve dinner to those at the Ronald McDonald
House, I always come away thanking the Lord for so many blessings that He has
bestowed on our family.
The backbone of the Knights of Columbus, of course, is our principals but
the enhancer is the camaraderie and the love we have for each other. This is
shown every time I hear the good-natured jabs and digs between Brothers about
the cars/trucks they drive or a Brother’s age or a Brother’s facial hair or receding
hair line. I know when men talk about such things, men feel that is too gushy,
but when we accomplish a project, like a Bingo Knights event, we Brothers that
have worked on it, no matter how minor or major a part, feel elated with the
feeling of “a job well done”.

But each time I’m around my Brothers, I realize how great our Council is
and how enjoyable it is to rub shoulders with my Brothers, just to hear the quips
that come from them. If you, Brothers, have not felt that recently, come join us on
some of the upcoming activities such as the Spanish Nova, December 7th; provid-
ing refreshments after all the Masses on December 13th and 14th; and the Christ-
mas Project, December 19th and 20th. The Project Chairmen for these projects
will make sure you don’t overcommit and that you have a good time. Come join
us!

Council 6065's BINGO KNIGHTS Raises $6800
In SALUTE TO OUR MILITARY Event
Honoring our military and veterans with a BINGO KNIGHTS fund-raiser
has long been a goal of Council 6065 and on Saturday, Nov. 15th, that goal was
realized as more that 145 parishioners from St. Mark's came together to play bin-
go. And when all the games were over and the raffle prizes awarded, the real
winners were the military-support charities that will share in the $6800 net pro-
ceeds.
The evening got off to a fitting start as two color guard units presented The
Colors to the overflow crowd. The event was honored to have the Paralyzed Vet-
erans of America-Lone Star Chapter Honor Guard as well as the Plano Senior
High School ROTC Color Corps on hand to present the flags. That was followed
by a recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance and a inspiring rendition of the Star
The Plano Senior High School ROTC Color Guard was an impressive unit as they shared in
the presentation of the Colors to start our Nov, 15 BINGO KNIGHTS

Spangled Banner, led by STM music director Kenton Kravig. The opening pray-
er was led by our Pastor, Father Cliff Smith.
And then it was time for BINGO. But for those who came early enough
(since the doors opened at 6:30 p.m.) there were snacks and treats aplenty.... from
chips and dips to veggies and spreads to cakes and cookies....AND.... delicious
chicken fingers from our good friends at Raising Cane's Chicken Fingers, r ight
across the street from our parish complex. The coffee was again donated by our
local RaceTrac, the fr iendly folks up the street at Alma and Park.
So...now it was really time to play BINGO. After all the "legal" rules and
regulations were read by MC Ron Schoof, the first game got underway with the
“Dynamic Duo” of John Wheeler and Phil Reinkemeyer (and their new assistant,
Jerry Lenihan) calling the numbers once again; and wouldn't you know it, the
winner was Andy Ray. He and his wife, Ellen, lead the St. Michael's Society,
which was one of the beneficiaries of our event. Perhaps it was a "sign" that we
were doing the right thing. He won a prize package consisting of a Dallas Cow-
boys T-shirt, a car-detailing package from Huffines Cheverolet, and gift cards
from Poor Richard's Cafe, The Hangout Bar & Grill, and
YeShire Tavern....all of that for making the first " T" on his bingo card.
The PVA Honor Guard drew the attention of Ron Schoof (in the Army shirt) as they present-
ed the Colors to begin the event.

The second game, "C for Yourself" featured a package of prizes including
a Dallas Cowboys zippered jacket, unlimited car washes for a month from
The Auto Shop, a pair of free passes to the Studio Movie Grill-Plano, and a
gift card from Poor Richard's Cafe. Tatiana Peixolo will undoubtedly be driv-
ing the cleanest car in town for a while.
Game three was "X marks the Spot" and Sabrina Mendoza was the win-
ner. Her basket included a pair of tickets to the Studio Movie Grill-Plano, a gift
certificate from Plano Tire Co., and gift cards from Greek Isles Grill & Taver-
na, Romano's Macaroni Grill, and Poor Richard's Cafe.
"Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend" was not only a famous song (the best
version by Marilyn Monroe in the 1953 movie "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes") but it
was also the theme for game four. Even though Frances Chandler did not win a
"diamond", she did win a treasure trove of prizes. First, there is breakfast at Poor
Richard's Cafe, then lunch at The Fish Shack. Then she can take in a movie--
with a friend-- with her pair of tickets from Studio Movie Grill-Plano. And
since she knows she has a great meal awaiting her after the movie at Dee Lincoln
Steak & Burger Bar, she can skip dinner at the theater. Finally, a few days
later, she can head to Razzoo’s Cajun Cafe for another dinner.
The game five contest required the bingo players to make a capital "H",
which could stand for "heaven" or "happy", but certainly not "he__". Julia Mon-
tiel was first to call out "BINGO!!!" and she was rewarded with gifts certain to
make her "Happy"..... car detailing from Huffines Chevrolet, a pair of movie
tickets from Studio Movie Grill-Plano, and dining gift cards from Spaghetti
Warehouse, South Fork Texas Steak & Crab, and Poor Richard's Cafe.
Karin and Fred Kuglin were all smiles as they sold tickets for our special raffle at BINGO
KNIGHTS.

After a brief intermission and an opportunity to get some more snacks or
perhaps some liquid refreshments from the "BAR" team of Jim Rizzo, Pat Haney,
and Bill Butcher, who served up a variety of beer, wine, water, and soft drinks, the
action began again. And by now the secret was out-- another of our good friends,
the folks at Poor Richard's Cafe, wanted to put a gift card in ALL ten of the
prize baskets--so you will read their name five more times as the prize baskets
were dispensed to the winners.
Game six started the second half of the evening and the theme was "Date
Night", where the winner had to form two outside "L's" on the card. Tim Bauer
was the winner and he and his wife, Jo Ann, will enjoy a prize package consisting
of an iPic Theaters gift card as well as cards from Brio's Tuscan Grill,
Logan's Road House, and Steve Field's Steak & Lobster Lounge.... and yes, a
gift card for breakfast at Poor Richard's Cafe.
Four stamps in each corner was the requirement for game seven and before
long a familiar voice was shouting "BINGO!!!" again..... yes.... it was Tim Bau-
er. By now his wife is really happy she "dragged" him out to play (or so she
claims, although he has it the other way around), but whatever the case, they
Pete Maurer gets his "intense" face on as he readies for the first numbers to be called,
while his wife, Connie, gives him the "hopeful" look. Meanwhile, to his left, Pam and Lee
Barkett study their cards in hopes that someone at their table will win!
Pete served as co-chairman of the event and, alas, he did NOT win a bingo game.

walked away with a prize basket of gift cards from Babe's Chicken Dinner
House, Chuy's, Poor Richard's Cafe, a pair of movie tickets from
Studio Movie Grill-Plano and car detailing from Huffines Chevrolet. The Bau-
ers admitted that some "guy" named Pete Maurer "persuaded" them to attend,
which can be verified by their daughter, Ashley.
The inside frame around the FREE space was the objective of game eight
and before long Emma Moore had hers complete to take the prize basket loaded
with dining gift cards. She will be eating at Blue Goose Cantina, Brio's Tuscan
Grill, The Fish Shack, Fuddrucker's, Liberty Burger, Patrizio's, and Poor
Richard's Cafe. Since this will require a lot of driving around,
North Central Ford will give her car a free oil and filter change.
Game nine was a little more difficult because now the winner had to make
a LARGE picture frame along the outside of the bingo card.... and this took a lot
longer than expected, but finally we had a winner..... and again it was a familiar
voice. NO, not Tim again, but Julia Montiel, the winner of game five. This time
Julia won a basket loaded with more dining cards from Boomer Jack's, Fish-
monger's Seafood Cafe, Fuddrucker's, Outback Steakhouse, Plucker's Wing
Bar, Rudy's Country Store, and Poor Richard's Cafe. Again, since all
Andy and Ellen Ray, representing the St. Michael's Society at St. Mark's, were showcasing the
projects that the Society does throughout the year to bring some of the comforts of home to our
troops overseas. The Society was one of the beneficiaries of BINGO KNIGHTS.

this driving will require service to her car, the folks at North Central Ford will
give her a free oil and filter change. And because by now she is tired of eating
out (10 restaurant dining cards in all), a gift card from Albertson's in Plano will
allow her to buy something and cook at home.
The final game of the evening before the "Blackout" event called for a
PLUS sign through the Free space. Tom O'Connor was the lucky winner and he
is in the PLUS column with dining gift cards from Babe's Chicken Dinner
House, Brio's Tuscan Grill, Cafe de France, Covino's,
Outback Steakhouse, Spaghetti Warehouse, McAlister's Deli, and
Poor Richard's Cafe. Tom also won a pair of tickets to the Studio Movie Grill-
Plano and an oil and filter change from North Central Ford.
And now we are ready for BLACKOUT.... and the grand prize of $600
in VISA gift cards. A lot, a whole lot of numbers were called and the anxiety
built and a few cries of "Oh, they just missed MY number" were heard until.....
until..... finally Christine Dinius called BINGO!!! and it was all over but the veri-
fying, and sure enough, Christine was the WINNER!
During the first intermission and between several of the games, raffle
drawings were held and a lot of people went home "extra" happy with some very
nice prizes. A year of free auto maintenance from The Auto Shop was won by
John Vasquez. The grand prize for the raffle was a pair of VIP Suite tickets to the
LM Armed Forces Bowl, which will be played in Fort Worth in early Janu-
ary. The "very, very excited" winner was Pete Maurer. And that is called THE
LUCK OF THE DRAW!
It is getting pretty INTENSE now as Paul Krusac marks his card. In the background, Ma-
rie and Randy LeGrand can be seen doing the same. Unbeknownst to any of them, the
player in the RED jacket sitting across from them was one of the big winners of the even-
ing, scoring two BINGOS! That would be Tim Bauer.

And now comes the cleanup and the accolades for those who made our
SALUTE TO OUR MILITARY bingo event possible. First and foremost, the ar-
ea business donors who are mentioned above. In addition, special thanks to these
restaurants who provided dinner gift cards to all the members of the two Color
Guards: Abuelo's, BJ's Brewhouse-Allen, Carrabba's, Love & War in Texas,
Rockfish Grill, T.G.I. Friday's, and Texas Land & Cattle and
The Cheesecake Factory, both in Allen.
Without their continuing generosity to our charity BINGO KNIGHTS, we
would not be successful. Then to our other local sponsors who provide financial
and/or material support: Barnes & Noble, Bed, Bath & Beyond, Best Buy,
Costco Wholesale-East, Costco Wholesale-West, the Dallas Cowboys,
Kroger Food Stores, Sam's Club-Plano, and Tom Thumb Stores. A special
thanks goes to Bryan Delgado, event supervisor for ESPN, who donated the
grand prize in the raffle drawing, the pair of tickets to the Lockheed Martin
Armed Forces Bowl.
Don "The Dauber Man" Lauterbach is all smiles as he waits for the next customers to purchase
what they hope will be "the lucky dauber" to win at BINGO KNIGHTS.

Following that list are our table sponsors and donors: John Kraft/State
Farm, Jack Ternan, Joanie Stephens, Greg Fisher, Mark Daus, Kathi Thompson,
Ron and Barbara Schoof, Chuck Schumacher, Mike and Martha Bernatis, Rick
Maiella/Realton, the Broussard Family, Fred and Karin Kuglin, Pete Maurer, and
In Memory of Marty Kaplan.
Finally, we have to thank our event organizers, starting with John and
Rose Patterson, who have headed our BINGO KNIGHTS events since they start-
ed. Then Fred and Karin Kuglin, who lead the publicity and "back-stage" produc-
tion. Somebody has to "assemble" the gift baskets, and Ron and Barbara Schoof
have been doing that very complicated task since Day One. Last but not least are
the "beggars", the Brother Knights who go out and ask our area restaurants and
businesses to donate to our cause. That task force has been headed by "Chief
Beggar" Pete Maurer, who is most ably assisted by the following members of our
Council: Mike Murray, Tom Collingwood, Rudy Profaizer, Paul Krusac, Bill
Ptacek, Aaron Baldwin, Bob Knode, Jerry Lenihan, Don Lauterbach, Frank McEl-
ligott, Matt Flanagan, Mike Resinger, Randy LeGrand, Jim Rizzo, and perhaps
some unknowns (if I left you off, please forgive me).
Not to be forgotten is the contribution from our Ladies Auxiliary, who take
care of the "pre-game" snacks and appetizers, manage our food tables, help us put
the event together and then take it down, and who give us their support as we do
our best to fulfill our main goal as Knights of Columbus---CHARITY.
And just in case you thought I forgot.... I didn't.... THANK YOU
to Greg and Tanya Olson for taking the dozens of fine pictures that appear in this
story as well as those that will be available on our website. You two were terrif-
ic!
So that is it for BINGO KNIGHTS until next year...sometime in the
Spring! Our Council thanks everyone who helped in even the slightest way.

from our November BINGO KNIGHTS event.

Karin Kuglin, who headed up the Publicity committee as well as the Raffle Prizes committee
sits with Rudy Profaizer as the evening progresses. Alas, Rudy didn't win anything.... but then
as the old adage goes.... "You can't win if you don't play!"
The excitement might have been too much for one of our intrepid bartenders as Pat Haney
(left) appears to be dozing off. GK Bill Butcher came over to check out the situation while
Jim Rizzo (right) was ready for action. As it turned out, Pat said he was just "resting his
eyes" so that he could FOCUS on serving the beer and wine, but GK Bill stayed on as the
third bartender.

Council 6065 Joins In Salute to Veterans
At VA BBQ in Bonham
By SK Chuck Neubecker
We had our 16th annual barbecue at the Veterans Administration Hospital in
Bonham, TX on Saturday, October 4th. This hospital serves US military veterans
in north Texas and neighboring states and the barbecue is a way to say "THANK
YOU" on behalf on the community to the veterans who are resident patients at the
hospital and adjacent nursing home. The event is in keeping with the Patriotic or-
der of the 4th Degree.
Veterans were present who served our country in World War II, Korea, the
Cold War, Vietnam, Desert Storm, Iraq, and Afghanistan. Approximately160 hos-
pital patients, nursing home residents, and hospital staff were served hamburgers
with all the trimmings, hot dogs, baked beans, chips, fruit, cake, cookies, donuts,
and home made ice cream. They enjoyed it immensely and many went through
the line several times. We served 240 hamburgers and 220 hot dogs. A raffle of
telephone calling cards and gift certificates was held, which is always a big hit
with the vets.
No VA BBQ could come off without the help of the wives of the Sir Knights.... and we
were ably assisted by (l-r) Wilma Navarrete, Barb Meyer, and Shirley Sammons.

We often have a little drama and this year was no exception. The two grills
were working, but putting out uneven heat, which slowed the cooking pro-
cess. Because of all the warming pans hooked into the electrical circuit, the
breakers kept tripping, necessitating some field expediencies just like in the mili-
tary.
Participating were a total of 24 Fourth Degree (Christopher Columbus As-
sembly) and Third Degree Knights and family members. A major donation of
meat was received from Gary Hirsch of Hirsch Meats (Parker and Alma) and all
the ice cream from Henry Gentry of Henry’s Homemade Ice Cream (Parker and
Independence). Generous cash donations were received from the following Coun-
cils: 6065 ($200), 7850 ($100), 11716 ($100), 12021 ($100), 12300 ($100) and
13520 ($100).
Gift Card donations for food were received from three Sam’s Wholesale
Clubs (Central Expressway/Spring Creek, Coit/Bush Turnpike, and Ohio/121),
two Costco Clubs (Central Expressway and Dallas Parkway), Tom Thumb (Park
Blvd. and Preston), and items for raffle from Trader Joe’s (Preston/Park)). Please
patronize our sponsors with your business. Bill and Sandy Ptacek donated the
hamburger and hot dog buns.
Thanks to all the Knights involved in arranging the donations.

PASSBOOK PROJECT FINISHES A
GREAT RUN
For more than two DECADES (23 years to be precise), the Knights of Co-
lumbus of Council 6065 would spend the late summer and early-fall months recit-
ing a familiar refrain on the grounds of St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic
Church: "Would you like to buy a Passbook?"
Some of our Brother Knights were "enthusiastic hawkers" while some took
the "passive" approach, but by whatever means necessary, they got the job
done. And now that job and project appear to be headed for retirement, according
to project chairman (for 22 of the 23 years!) Rudy Profaizer, who affectionately
became known as "Passbook Rudy". (Rudy wanted to mention that Roger Scott
started the project in 1993 and we sold 15 books!)
After 23 years and more than 16,500 Passbooks sold (and in recent years
they were called by their official name, "entertainment Passbook"), the event has
run its course for our Council. The 2015 edition will be the last one actively sold
by the KC's as the effort will move to ON-LINE sales only. According to
"Passbook Rudy", this year's efforts produced a total of $1,140 for our charity
budget, with 77 books having been sold. By comparison, 210 copies were sold
last year, which is still a whole lot under our record year (2005) when we sold
5,333 books, which includes our "wholesale" efforts and Council member
sales. That accomplishment earned Council 6065 recognition as the "Largest non-
profit sales organization in the US".
The best year for Council sales was 2004, when we sold 1,674 books along
with 3,078 through our wholesale operation to other area Councils. For those
who are "number crunchers", the individual sales by Council 6065 members was
16,577 during the 23 years of this project.
Still, all-in-all, it was a great success and was (and probably will be forev-
er) the largest fund-raiser for Council 6065. In addition to the copies sold by in-
dividual Council 6065 members, we also served as the "Wholesale Distributor"
for other area Councils, which resulted in more than 42,600 books being sold
throughout the north Dallas area. The total NET revenue to our Council's charity
budget was $220,000. Quite an accomplishment for a bunch of guys hawking
books in front of church for a few months each year! It goes without saying (but
we will), the project would NOT have been successful had Rudy Profaizer grown
weary of heading it. But since he didn't, we and our charities benefitted and now
that chapter is coming to a close.

PASSBOOK CONTINUED
The Council would like to thank "Passbook Rudy" and the many, many
Brother Knights who lent their time and selling skills to this project during the
past 23 years. There are far too many names to recognize over the course of
"Passbook Sales" days, but a few come to mind.
In the early days, it was Joe Rodriquez (who was in Council 6065 before it
split and now is in the Lumen Christi Council at All Saints) who would sell the
most every year. Joe had his "clients list" and they were HIS and he could count
on them every year. Then there was Dick Eschelbrenner, who did not have a lot
of "clients", but one year he had a BIG one who bought 100 books (which proba-
bly remains as our record single sale to one customer). In recent years, the Coun-
cil's individual sales efforts have been led by Don Lauterbach, who is a five-time
champion, including four in row from 2007 to 2010 and then again in
2012. Individual sales accounted for approximately 40% of the sales each year,
and also worthy of mention is Bill Ptacek, who consistently sold 20+ books a
year. These names, along with "Passbook Rudy" will live in the annals of enter-
tainment Passbook history.
It was indeed a GREAT run for all involved!

Blood Drive News
Council 6065 held its semi-annual blood drive on Oct. 19th and after all was said and
done, the “workers” took time out for a break. Shown (l-r) are Bill Ptacek, John Spencer
(project chairman), and Dave Watson. Laying down on the job is John Patterson, while
Carter Blood Care supervisor Tina Brooks looks to see if John has another pint in
him. Lloyd Hasley, Rick Hardy, and Alex Hernandez also helped on the project but left
before they got “called to the couch”. The drive collected 38 units, with 13 first-time do-
nors. There were also 17 parishioners who have given more than 10 times.

"Keeping 'Christ' in Christmas" in Texas Drive
Led by Council 6065 Member Jonathan Saenz
Brother Knight Jonathan Saenz, a member of Council 6065, even though he
lives and works in Austin, has been at the forefront of the drive to allow school
children throughout the State of Texas to call Christmas by its rightful name and
to sing "Christmas" carol and give "Christmas" cards to their classmates.
All of this is because of a law, spearheaded by Saenz, a lawyer and presi-
dent of TEXAS VALUES, was passed by the Texas legislature as HB 308 in
2013. Now known as the "Merry Christmas Law", it allows children, teachers,
parents, and school administrators to acknowledge "CHRISTMAS" on school
grounds without fear of censorship, persecution or litigation. For more infor-
mation about HB 308, please go to www.merrychristmastexas.com.
Jonathan made his First Degree and joined our Council in March, 2006. .
Thanks to the efforts of Jonathan Saenz, WE can buy Christmas trees. Let those who want
to take "Christ" out of Christmas pay more for their "holiday" trees.
