Regularly Scheduled LocalBus Service Sixteen fixed-route transit systemsprovide regularly scheduled bus serv-ice in Maine. The state’s larger citiesoffer frequent service on a variety ofroutes, serving local commuters, shop-pers, senior citizens, persons with dis-abilities and others.

Portland’s METRO is the largest sys-tem in the state, with 21 buses, 7routes and 1.4 million annual riders. The BAT in Bangor is the secondlargest, with 15 buses, 10 routes andover a half million riders a year.citylink in Lewiston-Auburn operates8 buses on 9 routes and carries180,000 annual riders.

Smaller systems in Augusta,Waterville, Paris, Belfast, Rockland,Bath, South Portland, Sanford,Biddeford, Saco, Old Orchard Beachand Ellsworth operate 5 days a week, helping area residents get aroundtown without the use of a private car.

In rural areas of western and east-ern Maine, some routes receive regu-larly scheduled service once or twicea week.

Two Indian Reservations inWashington County provide area resi-dents with local bus service.

Subscription Commuter,Park & Ride and RideShare ProgramsMany Maine workers travel consider-able distances to work each day with-out the worry and expense of drivinga car. They are benefiting from agrowing network of vanpool andcommuter bus services available toworkers in the state on a low-costsubscription basis.

In most cases, commuters sign upfor one month or longer, and pay aset fee regardless of the number oftimes they actually ride. The ZOOM Turnpike Express provides

weekday commuter service fromBiddeford-Saco to Portland. The serv-ice is sponsored by the MaineTurnpike Authority and the MaineDepartment of Transportation.

Go Maine, a statewide rideshareprogram sponsored by the MaineDepartment of Transportation and theMaine Turnpike Authority, manages a

fleet of 9 vans transporting stateworkers and others to and fromAugusta each day. MDOT also main-tains a series of Park ’n Ride lots thatallow commuters to meet and travelto work in one car. StatewideRideshare information is available atwww.gomaine.org.

Commuter bus service to Bath IronWorks is provided daily by RTP,Coastal Trans and Hudson Bus Lines. In addition, Bath Iron Works sponsorsfive Park ’n Ride buses transportingover 1,400 workers each day. Privatebus service is provided to employeesof the Kittery Naval Shipyard.

Regional Public ProvidersMaine leads the nation in itsapproach to social service transporta-tion. Instead of having individual pro-grams provide their own transporta-tion services, social service agenciesin Maine can purchase rides for theirclients from one of nine regionaltransportation providers in the state.

This “coordinated” approach freessocial service agencies from having toworry about bus drivers and vehiclerepairs, allowing them to concentrateon what they know best. And itmeans that costly buses and vans canbe shared by a variety of programs.

In many cases, the same bus can beused to take Sheltered Workshopclients to work, preschool children toHeadstart, MaineCare clients to thedoctor, and senior citizens to theirmidday lunch program.

Regional providers offer “door-to-door” services. Most require a one-day or two-day advance reservation. In addition to client services, mostprograms also offer transportationthat is available for anyone whoneeds a ride.

Volunteer DriverProgramsVolunteers play an important role inmeeting health care needs in a ruralstate like Maine. High quality med-ical facilities will not help if the peo-ple who need the services are stuckat home with no way to get to thedoctor.

Because of the rural nature of thestate, it is not possible to schedule abus or van for every appointment.

This is especially true for isolated indi-viduals who must travel long dis-tances to receive special treatmentsat regional medical centers.

Volunteer driver programs allowconcerned individuals to help theirneighbors by offering rides in theirprivate cars. Drivers are trained andcertified by the sponsoring agency, and are reimbursed for costs basedon the miles they travel.

Rides are arranged in advance.Usually a one or two-day advancereservation is required. This service isoffered for medical trips toMaineCare clients who are unable touse regular public buses, or whereother bus and van service is notavailable.

Sheltered WorkshopTransportationEmployment programs for personswith developmental disabilities arelocated throughout the state ofMaine. These not-for-profit programsoffer a wide array of training opportu-nities for Maine residents who aredevelopmentally disabled.

These programs help participantsdevelop the skills they need to livemore independently in the communi-ty. For some, this can mean prepara-tion for employment in a private busi-ness. For others, it can mean contin-ued work in a setting that offers ahigher level of service and support. For others, it means help with devel-oping basic daily living skills.

Developmentally disabled adultsdepend on bus transportation to getto and from work each day. Thestate’s regional transportation sys-tems operate a combined fleet of over 160 buses and vans to providethese individuals with the servicesthey need.

Funding for Sheltered Workshoptransportation is provided by theDepartment of Health and HumanServices and the state’s MaineCareprogram.

Transportation for SeniorCitizen Lunch ProgramsThe midday meal is often the primesocial hour for senior citizens inMaine. Nutritious hot dinners are

served year round at community cen-ters throughout the state. These pro-grams give elderly Maine residents achance to get out into the communityfor good food and companionship.

Some senior centers offer cardgames and other social activities inaddition to lunch.

Door-to-door bus and van serviceis available for most senior citizenlunch programs. In many cases, sen-ior citizens can combine stops at thegrocery store with their ride homefrom lunch.

An elderly bus rider in Ellsworthsaid: “My husband always did all thedriving. After he passed away, I wasleft with no means of transportation. When they started the bus service, itwas such a blessing to me. I was real-ly stuck and depressed. The bus res-cued me.”

Senior citizen lunch programs inMaine are sponsored by theAroostook, Southern Maine, Eastern, and Western Maine Area Agencies onAging, and by the Senior Spectrum.

Intercity Bus and FerryServicesIntercity buses and ferries provideMaine with important local, national, and international transportation links.

Concord Trailways, Vermont Transit, and SMT offer fast bus service toNew Hampshire, Massachusetts, andEastern Canada. Cyr Bus Lines offersdaily service between Bangor andAroostook County. West’sTransportation connects Bangor andCalais. And the Shuttle Bus providesservice between Biddeford andPortland.

Private and public ferry servicescontinue to provide a vital link forMaine’s many island communities.International ferries provide service toCanada from ports in Bar Harbor,Eastport, and Portland.

Amtrak passenger train servicebetween Boston and Portland beganin December 2001 providing Mainewith access to Amtrak’s nationwiderail passenger network for the firsttime. Service is planned to extend toBrunswick and Auburn-Lewiston inthe future. Station stops in Maineinclude Portland, Old Orchard Beach(seasonal), Saco, and Wells.
