My Websters New World Dictionary defines Vacationland as an area attractive to vacationers

because of recreational facilities, historic sitesin a word, Maine. Maine takes great pride in its

designation as Vacationland. As you look through your copy of Maine Invites You, what will

capture your attention first is the multitude of things to see and do in Maine.

The natural beauty of Maine. Our gently sloping, sandy beaches and our steep and rocky

shoreline that so many equate with the rugged New England Coast. Our forests that offer the

peace and solitude best described as indescribable. Sunrise atop Cadillac Mountain in Acadia

National Park will open your eyes to the spectacular beauty that can only be experienced in

Maine. Our lakes, ponds, rivers and streams are teeming with trophy fish. Wildlife in its natural

surroundings. Scenery too beautiful for words. For you, it can mean a lifetime of memories.

Our culture and history is part of all of Maine. Our Franco-American heritage and our close

MAINE ENJOYS a healthy, in vigorating climate. Its over all weather con-ditions are a valuable asset to the state in that good air quality andmoderate temperatures are con du cive to productive labor and a prin-cipal factor in Maines four-season vacation/travel industry.

Climatological Division. Maine is divided into three climatological divisions: Coastal, Southern Interior, and North ern Interior. The CoastalDivision, which extends for about twenty miles in land along the lengthof the coast, is tem pered by the ocean, resulting in lower summer andhigher winter temperatures than are typical of in terior zones. TheSouth ern Interior Division extends in a longitudinal belt across thesouth ern portion of the State, and encompasses about 30% of Mainestotal area. The Northern Interior Division occupies nearly 60% of theStates area and has a continental climate. It is furthest from the oceanand contains the highest elevations.

Temperatures. Maine has one of the most comfortable statewidesummer climates in the continental United States. Peak temperatures,normally occurring in July, average about 70F throughout the State. Inthe Southern Interior Divi sion during a very warm summer, tem pera-tures may reach 90 for as many as 25 days, and in the Coastal Division,two to seven days. Summer nights are usually comfortably cool. Wintersare generally cold, but very prolonged cold spells are rare. Northern Interior weather stations may record as many as 40 to 60 days of sub-zero temperatures annually, while coastal stations report 10 to 20 sub-zero days per year.

Precipitation. Annual precipitation in Maine averages 40 inches inthe Northern Division, about 42 inches in the South and 46 inches in theCoastal Division. Although Maine is rarely subjected to ice storms, hur-ricanes and tornadoes, 10 to 20 thunderstorms occur annually in theCoastal Division and 15 to 30 else where. Heavy ground fogs often appear in low-lying inland areas, but occur most frequently along thecoast, for 25 to 60 days annually. The southern portion has 80 to 120clear days per year when there is no fog or other precipitation, andnorthern regions somewhat less. The percentage of possible sunshinevaries from 50% in Eastport to about 60% in Portland.

Average annual snowfall in Maine is 50 to 70 inches in the CoastalDivision, 60 to 90 inches in the Southern Interior and 90 to 110 inchesin the Northern Interior. The Coastal Division rarely has more than 15 to20 days annually with snowfall of one inch or more, although a Northeaster may occasionally drop 10 or more inches of snow in asingle day. The Northern Interior may have up to 30 days a year with a minimum of one inch. January is normally the snowiest month, withan average of about 20 inches.

*All trails at state parks and public reserved lands have hiking opportunities. Depending on the time of year, some trails in selected state parks also have shared use opportunities for:

cross-country skiing riding ATVs horseback riding riding mountain bikes

ATV, equestrian, and bicycle use is allowed on gravel roads on public reserved lands that have the green and white sign indicating Shared Use Road.

Call individual parks or public reserved land units for information about specific trail uses allowed in each area.

There are generally no formal picnic areas on Public Reserved Lands. Informal picnicking without fires is permitted.
