Message from the Commodore❱ ❱ ❱

It’s good to see all of the boats in the slips and everyone on the water experiencing the awesome sailing weather. For those who love a good fall sail the forecast is look-ing good.

If you missed the Low Country Boil and Allen’s 8th annual 50th birthday party, be sure to mark the next one on your calendar (September 20th) as it is sure to be one for the records. Every year I think there is no way Allen and Thumper Johnson can possibly top the perfect party they hosted last year. But, much to my delight, they prove me wrong every year. What more can you ask for than being at the lake with great friends, great food and great music.

The annual meeting is coming up on November 10th 2:00 pm at the Afterdeck so please plan on attending. We will review the past year, make plans for the upcoming year, and elect fresh faces to serve on the board of governors. After the meeting there will be a soup potluck so bring your favorite for all to enjoy.

See you on the water.

We had a good turnout, 9 teams, great weather, lots of prizes, and a fun time was had by all. The tournament was held at The Links at Pretty Prairie on August 25, 2013. Thirty-seven players of all ages and abilities participated, comprising the nine teams. The course was in great shape. We raised $115 for the Pretty Prairie Middle School Spirit Squad at Hole # 5 with a Hole-in-One contest.

NSA SocialsloW CouNTry Boil Good food! Great Band! Best Party of the year!

Well, I survived another fiftieth birthday party, thanks to everyone who attended. The dinner was well received and the Goons were great.

We had 126 for the shrimp boil dinner and still had 35 left at 10:30 when the band wrapped up. We even had the commodores from both NSA and Walnut Valley dancing with us till the end.The temperature was a bit brisk (as well as the wind) when we arrived to set up at 3:00, so we made a decision to move to under the Afterdeck. When the party started the wind had dropped to a pleasant breeze making it too late to move everything back to the point.

We had several requests for the Shrimp Boil Recipe, so it is published below.

What do you think about the eighth annual party—After-deck or the shelter house point? Mark your calendars for next year, september 20th, 2014. I plan on attending!

Shrimp Boil Recipe - Thumper Johnson

1 pot feeds 10 -12 people.

Ingredients1 small bag of red potatoes (2-3 lbs.)

4 pkgs brats (2 per person)

5 ears of corn, husked and snapped in half

4 lbs. shrimp raw, unpeeled (6-25 pp) makes1/3 to 1/4 lbs. per person

Directionsn Step 1

Fill a large pot 2/3 full of water. Add Zatarans seasoning to the pot. Cover and bring to a boil, then reduce to a simmer.

n Step 2 Add the potatoes to the pot; return liquid to a boil, cover and cook until just tender, about 10 minutes. Add the sausage/chicken; cover and continue cooking, 5 minutes. Add the corn; cover and cook, 5 minutes more.

n Step 3 Stir in shrimp; Cover and cook until the shrimp curl and are just opaque, 2 to 3 minutes.

n Step 4 Transfer the shrimp and vegetables with a slotted spoon or skimmer to a large bowl or spread out on a newspaper on the table. Serve with lemon wedges and hot sauce, or cocktail sauce if desired.

*added for people who do not like brats

ORACLE TEAM USA stages massive comeback to win 34th America’s CupORACLE TEAM USA won the 34th

America’s Cup in a winner-take-all 19th race, defeating challenger Emirates Team New Zealand by 44 seconds in today’s clincher. Led by 35-year-old skipper Jimmy Spithill, ORACLE TEAM USA won by the score of 9-8.

This is the second America’s Cup win for ORACLE TEAM USA and Spithill, which won the 162-year-old trophy in Valencia, Spain, in February 2010. Then 30 years of age, Spithill became the youngest to ever skipper a Cup winning team.

In the past week ORACLE TEAM USA has steadily improved its boatspeed to the point where it could hydrofoil upwind at 30-32 knots, incredible performance never seen before in the America’s Cup.

“It was a fantastic race. We wouldn’t have it any other way,” said Spithill, the two-time Cup winner. “We came from behind,

the guys showed so much heart. On your own you’re nothing, but a team like this can make you look great... We were facing the barrel of a gun at 8-1 and the guys didn’t even flinch.

“Thanks to San Francisco, this is one hell of a day,” Spithill said.

ORACLE TEAM USA’s victory marks one of the most improbable comebacks in the history of sport. The team won 11 races to score the 9 points required for victory due to a penalty imposed by the International Jury. Just last Wednesday, Sept. 18, ORACLE TEAM USA trailed the series 8-1. With the challenger on match point, the defender closed out the series with eight consecutive victories.

This was the third time in the history of the America’s Cup with a winner-take-all final race.Previously, the defender won in 1920 and the challenger won in 1983. Both

times the winner rallied from a multi-race deficit, but never anything amounting to eight straight wins.

“This was a wonderful match of teams,” said Regatta Director Iain Murray, who’s been involved with the America’s Cup since 1983. “In the case of a boat coming from behind, 3-1 down as was the case with Aus-tralia II in 83, the shoe is on a different foot this time around.

Then it was the challenger behind and this time it was the defender. But in the end we had great competition between two great teams, evenly matched, battling it out to the end.”

One million fans visited the official America’s Cup venues at Piers 27/29 and Marina Green since they opened on July 4, and hundreds of thousands more lined the shores of San Francisco Bay to catch a glimpse of the flying, foiling AC72.

Committee boat transmission linkage prevents us from using reverse, can-not adjust further. • Yards: The yard spaces are mowed. Special thanks to Tom Brown for his help with this project all season.Delayed our contract mowers by one week to save funds, mowed the Shelter house in prep for the Low Country Boil/Allen Johnson 7th 50th birthday party. . . bad luck because of the high winds the party was moved to underneath the AD. Helped Jim Carlisle repair flood damaged electrical at Shelter house.Removed abandoned utility poles from the west yard per Code requirements.• Afterdeck: SecureNet came out to fix the security system at no charge. We are still having intermittent problems but nothing cru-cial. Patrick purchased new compact fluorescent floodlight bulbs which will save us money in the long term but more expensive up front (They don’t make the old bulbs anymore). Patrick took deliv-ery on our high-priority ADA Handicap parking signs and posts. The Afterdeck air conditioners received their annual service.• Crane: The crane pumpout is repaired and operational after earlier flood damage. Still need to fix the pumpout fence. Repaired Adams Jetty range lights, and ordered a new light fixture for the Crane light. Still waiting on Cheney Electric to replace receptacle boxes on C and D slips, they have promised soon. • Work Credit: Any member needing work credit hours should check with their chairperson, and then call me for duty after 10/9. This raised considerable discussion about the possibilities. Nothing was decided or voted on but the topic of most interest is allowing a member to rent a second slip on a non-permanent basis, knowing that any other member without a slip but requesting one will have priority and can “bump” the member’s second slip. Every-one believed there are possibilities but the discussion was tabled for further thought and consideration.operations officer: Norman DodsonThe Low Country Boil was held on Sept. 26th and was its usual resounding success. Allen and Thumper have once again done an outstanding job.  Allen reports that we took in $1850.00 and he has turned in $628.63 in expenses, which would make it a huge suc-cess.  That officially wraps up the social season for the club. The next event will be the annual meeting on November 10.  An idea has been put out there to possibly have a viewing of the 34th America’s Cup Race during the soup potluck and social event.-Members interested in reserving the Shelter House, Afterdeck, or holding a special group activity should contact Jack Kramer at [email protected] commodore: Gary Cheatum.Gary was absent.secretary’s note: Due to oversight it was not announced that Allen Johnson won the Colossus Cup Regatta in the Multi-hull division which was sailed on August 17.
