Second Sunday in Lent March 8, 2020 Liturgical Color: Purple (service begins with a few moments of silence) Organ Prelude Call to Worship (sung) “Be Still and Know That I Am God” Chancel Choir Invitation to Worship Confession Leader (L): It is in our confession where we realize our desire for God and our hope for God’s mercy. It is in admitting the truth of our lives that we take the first step toward wholeness and healing. So let us make our confession, first in silence. (a few moments of silence precedes the corporate confessional) All: God of all the saints, God of all the sinners, hear our prayer. We would be saint-like—holy, good, patient, loving. But we end up feeling more like sinners—full of failures, of morality, selfish, mean. Perhaps you see us simply as human—as beloved, and flawed, and trying, and failing and succeeding. In all of this, forgive the wrong that we have done, and bless the good we have accomplished. Keep on loving us, and helping us, and molding us more and more into the image of Christ, in whose name we pray. L: Friends, hear this Good News: the love of God is beyond measure, and you are included in that love. Know that you are forgiven and freed to love and serve. Amen. HYMN 126 UMH “Sing Praise to God Who Reigns Above”

Psalm 121 I lift up my eyes to the hills; from where is my help to come?

My help comes from the Lord, Who made the earth and heaven.

God will not let your foot be moved and he who watches over you will not fall asleep.

God watches day and night; God’s promise sure is given:

The Lord will guard you; God is by your side to protect you. No pow’r of night or day Can vex your spirit sore.

The Lord will preserve you from all evil; God will keep you safe. The Lord will guide your ways

Both now and evermore.

(a moment of silence follows the reading of scripture)

CRUISING CHRISTIANS’ MARCH ACTIVITY

Sunday afternoon, March 29, at 2:30

For our March Activity, we will attend the play

“STEEL MAGNOLIAS” presented by the

Theatre Guild of Rockingham County. The

tickets are $15.00. We will leave the church

parking lot promptly at 2: 00. Come join us and

help support our local thespians. PLEASE SIGN

UP BY MARCH 22.

I think many of us remember the wonderfully

funny/yet sad movie with Julia Roberts, Sally

Field, Shirley MacLaine, Dolly Parton, and

Olympia Dukakis and others. Not only did it have

a lot of laughter but also a lot of sadness. The play

is about the bond a group of women share in a

small-town Southern community, and how they

cope with the death of one of their own.

Children’s Message Bobbie Kline The Offertory The Anthem “Creation Will Be At Peace” Chancel Choir The Sermon “A Slippery Slope” Rev. Joe Tarpley Prayers (followed by the Lord’s Prayer, to be sung)

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven.

Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.

Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil for the kingdom, the pow’r and the glory are yours,

now and for ever.

HYMN 534 UMH “Be Still, My Soul” Dismissal with Blessing L: The way is long; let us go together. The way is difficult; let us help each other. The way is joyful; let us share it. The way is Christ’s, for Christ is the Way; let us follow. The way is open before us; let us go: with the love of God, the grace of Christ and the communion of the Holy Spirit. All: Amen.
