Veterans Day SAVE THE DATE- Thursday, Nov. 9th (Back) On Thursday, November 9th, we will highlight our United States veterans and active military with a school-wide Veteran’s Day Celebration. We will be creating a Veterans’ Hall of Fame on which our CRES families can honor/remember our school community’s veterans and active military. At the end of this newsletter is an information sheet to be completed and brought in with a picture of the veteran. Parents will find a ‘type-able’ version in the Veterans Day KIT message sent last Friday or a ‘write-able’ version at the end of this On The Run newsletter. Students will post the picture and information sheet on a school-supplied ‘ready-made’ poster (see picture below) and hang the poster in the Main Lobby. Students may bring in a picture and information sheet to add to a ready-made poster in the Front Office starting Friday, October 20th. All Hall of Fame posters must be submitted by Wednesday, November 8th. We would be honored to have our school community’s veterans/active military in attendance at the ceremony and to stay after the ceremony to meet with students. We understand that they may be unavailable to attend our ceremony, and we would still like to honor/remember them in our Veterans’ Hall of Fame. Please click the link below to see the schedule of events for the morning of November 9th. All veterans/active military who would like to be part of the ceremony must RSVP by Friday, November 3th at https://goo.gl/forms/AE8pWkXglzIpBhNG2.

Impact Aid Forms (Back)

Impact Aid Forms will be sent home in folders on Wednesday, November 1. Forms should be returned to school by Friday, November 3. It is very important that this form is completed and returned to school as soon as possible. One form is required for each student, not per family. Each November, FCPS sends out a Student-Parent Survey to identify students with federal connections to ascertain much needed federal funds via Impact Aid grants. For the vast majority of families, the form will require only a signature and date. If someone in the household is a civilian working on federal property, active duty, or foreign military, please complete the relevant information in sections 2, 3, 4 and 5. We really appreciate your assistance with this quick turnaround.

SCA Representatives for 2017- 2018 (Back) Congratulations to the elected SCA Representatives for the 2017-18 school year.

The Library Book Fair-SAVE THE DATE- Nov. 13th-17th (Back) THE LIBRARY BOOK FAIR IS COMING to Colvin Run November 13th-17th. When you visit the book fair, look for the Teacher Wish Lists. If you are able, you may meet your child at either of that class’s two book fair sessions, to choose and purchase items together. (View the class visit schedule here.) However, if you are unable to visit the book fair yourself, your child will browse and make a Wish List on either Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday and bring the list home to discuss with you. Then they are able to bring money on their class’s buying day, either Wednesday, Thursday or Friday. The book fair will be open Monday 1:00-3:30, Tuesday 8:30-4:00, Wednesday 9:00-4:00, Thursday 9:00-5:00 and Friday from 9:00-4:00. WE NEED VOLUNTEERS to help at the library book fair. Setting up, taking money, helping little ones with wish lists, packing up—many hands make light work! Sign up here: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/20F0C49A4A62BA2FE3-colvin1

Vienna Rotary donates dictionaries (Back)

The Vienna Rotary visited 3rd grade last week to make their annual dictionary donation to our students. Thank you to the Vienna Rotary for all of their continued support for our students. During the visit to CRES, our students were able to make connections to the Vienna Rotary’s mission and how our students help others through CRES’ service learning projects.

Recent Tickets donated to CRES (Back) Recently, a generous family’s plans changed, and they couldn’t use their Nationals tickets. They donated them to CRES. We raffled them off and our new teacher Ms. Hoff was able to take three friends to enjoy a Nationals baseball game. If you have any tickets to an event you can't use or other items to donate, think of a CRES Staff member and know they will be put to good use.

CRES Red Ribbon Week (Back) October 23-27, 2017 “I pledge to live a safe and drug-free life”

Each year, our nation celebrates Red Ribbon Week. This is a time to educate our

youth and share ideas on how to lead a healthy lifestyle.

We encourage school staff and parents to model and discuss healthy living tips with

a focus on positive lifestyle choices. It is important that we all set a good example for

each other by eating healthy, being kind, exercising, and avoiding doing anything to

hurt our bodies and mind.

As a school, we will show our support of Red Ribbon Week in various ways

including:

1) Classes will sign a pledge on Monday, October 23rd

2) Team up by wearing jerseys or team apparel on Wednesday, October 25th

3) All unify and wear red on Friday, October 27th

It is up to all of us to encourage and positively affect our youth.

Digital Citizenship Week (Back) Colvin Run celebrated Digital Citizenship week Oct. 16-20th. We reminded students that though we focus on how to responsible, respectful users of digital technology on this week, it should happen every day! Students saw a short video on the morning news show about different aspects of digital citizenship each day, and did hands-on activities in both the STEAM lab and computer lab times during the day to reinforce the ideas. This link provides resources for families to help raise students to be safe, responsible, and ethical in the digital world. Here is a great article from Common Sense Media for parents of upper grade parents, in particular.

School-wide Writing Initiative (Back)

The Langley Pyramid’s (Colvin Run, Forestville, Great Falls, Churchill Road, and Spring Hill) elementary school goal again this year is to address writing proficiency in all of our schools. Mr. Junge shared this initiative at the most recent PTO meeting and explained how the teachers will use student writing, focus lessons, and individual conferencing in order to have all students work toward their writing goals this year.

Kindergarten Corner: Riverbend Field Trip (Back)

Kindergarteners enjoyed taking their first field trip of the school year to Riverbend Park earlier this

month. Students received opportunities to role play the different jobs (king, queen, worker, soldier)

ants have in a colony. Kindergarteners also went on a nature walk to search for ants and ant

colonies, as well as spiders, worms, centipedes, and other critters found out in the woods. Lastly,

students were given the opportunity to dig in the dirt and under leaves to see what they could find. It

was a great experience and a wonderful kindergarten memory was made for all!

Parent Interest and Expertise Volunteer Survey (Back)

We want to find out what it is your background, what interests you, and what you could do to help further enrich our students' learning. Our CRES parents are a wonderful resource, and we want to find opportunities to keep you involved in our school. If you are interested in sharing your knowledge with our students, please complete the survey to provide information regarding your passion, interests, field of expertise, and other important information.

During the school year, we will be utilizing this database to invite parents into the school to present to students, classes, or whole grade levels as a way to help grow our students’ knowledge. As part of our Project-based Learning (PBL) focus, depending on your area of expertise, we may need you to serve as an "Authentic Audience" for our students to present their culminating project.

For example, if you are a History buff, our 4th grade students could learn more from you as they are learning about Jamestown and Colonial Williamsburg. Like Butterflies??? Our 2nd grade students may need you to help in the classroom during their Monarch unit.

We have so many wonderful volunteers who regularly help at school and this is a great opportunity to bring in more parents to share their expertise for a brief time.

Click here to take the brief survey.
