Oink. I don’t want to boar you, but you might want to pig up some of these interesting details. Every year we produce and sell about 20,000 pigs from our 40 acres of piggeries. Pigs are usually

sold at around 6 months of age. We mix our own organic feed and will never use antibiotics or growth hormones. The pigs also get to sleep on fermentation beds.

Farming Areas Around 65% of the farm’s acreage is dedicated to agriculture, and over 114 types and more than 300 species of crops are grown year round. We also practice crop rotation – which basically means you don’t just grow one type of crop on one plot of land, as it will deplete the nutrients in the soil pretty quickly. You wouldn’t be too happy too if you have to wear the same shirt and pants all the time.

As part of our farm’s sustainable practice, we try to minimize the environmental impact of our pig’s poo – so we transform something that is regarded as waste to a resource we can use and sell. We first collect the fermentation beds (with all the lovely poo and pee in it) from the piggeries, and then separate the liquid waste from solid waste. Liquid waste will be directed to the lagoons and solid waste (with a mixture of crop waste and weeds) will be transported to the Compost Station. Composting takes around 3 months to complete, and around 4 months if the temperature gets cold. During the process of composting, the pile of pig manure and crop waste will be turned over 4 times and sealed under an inch of mud plaster. Under that mud plaster, the mixture will “boil” up to 70°C, which destroys pathogens and any weeds that exist in the mixture. After composing is done, it can then be used as fertilizer.

These goats are pretty special animals, you see, as their entire body can be utilized to make high quality byproducts – from paintbrushes to surgical threads. You goat it? Good. If you’re dying to feed the free-ranged pigs or goats (or just one of them if you’re that mean), just ask one of the receptionists.

A s i d e f ro m g ro w i n g o u r o w n vegetables and pigs, we also produce our own free ranged (and organic, duh) eggs! Every week, our chickens and ducks pop out 3500 and 1750 eggs, respectively. We promise there is no fowl play involved.

We have 10 Mongolian yurts and 10 standard hotel rooms available for guests who want to do some star-gazing under the surprisingly clear Shanghai skies. If you’re down for some BBQ without the queue, you’re more than welcome to do so at this location too.

W h a t w i l l m a k e a greenhouse “smar t”? Well, equip them with fans, a ventilation system,

black wall shades to ease the summer heat, a plot heater to protect seedlings from the winter cold, and then we’ll consider if it’s deemed worthy of being called “smart”. Smart greenhouses are ideal for growing and nurturing temperature sensitive seedlings. If you’re feeling farmer-ish, you can try our DIY planting and farming activities here.

If you are seariously down for some awesome fishing oppor-tuna-ty, head on over to the front desk!

If you have any inquiries, problems, emergencies, or a rumbling tummy, head on over to the reception center. You can also arrange a variety of activities to do on the farm with our lovely receptionists (we promise they don’t bite). You will also be meeting here if you signed up for the DIY tote decorating or cookie baking activities. Bikes are also available for rent. Look out for some mint and rosemary bushes on your way out to mask the pig smell!

In this cozy breeding area, we have rabbits, pigeons, Chongming crabs (you may catch some for a small fee), guinea fowls (the funny looking chickens), normal-looking chickens, ducks, and geese. If all you can think of is how tasty these free-range animals are, you may buy some on your way out. No, you aren’t required to catch and cook it. There is also a graffiti wall close by if you want to lose your kids for a few hours.

If smart greenhouses are resorts, then our “regular” greenhouses are hostels (at least its not like sleeping on the streets). In

these enclosures, we grow temperature-sensitive vegetables. During summer, the greenhouses can keep out pesky pests, and during winter, it can keep the vegetables warm.

We have 6 lagoons here that are used to filter and break down the liquid waste from the pig farm. The recycled water at the end of the process is then used to nourish the marsh crops, irrigate the agricultural crops, and wash the piggeries before it all ends up in the wetland. By the way, urine trouble if you step into the lagoons.
