Beautifying infrastructure

Council Project Technician ndash Capital Projects Leonardo Ramirez shares his thoughts on the day

From 9am the crew was ready to kick off with shovels in hand and the sun in the sky our Community Planting Day started

Just after setting up the tent a mum with her two children arrived and were happy to get their hands dirty

As time went by more people arrived to help and the BBQ was fired up ndash the best reward for all of us who had been busy gardening

Working together with the Parks and Recreation team more than 1000 plants were planted on the pond Aiming to create a natural atmosphere or just give a home back to the wildlife different types of plants were used

This pond is the second of its type to be built in Invercargill and its main purpose is to retain most of the sediments on the first 25mm of rain from the city

After this natural treatment the water pumped to our waterways is of much better quality

During the past several weeks the Engineering Services Group have had The Roading Company working away on a new stormwater pond near the Beatrice Street stormwater pump station

The pond is to help with the settlement of contaminants before the stormwater runoff is pumped out to the estuary and will increase the storage available for large rainfall events

Last week Council staff joined with Healthy Families and The Roading Company to hold a Community Planting Day at the new pond

Healthy Families Play Systems Innovator Cathy Jordan tells us more

The Community Planting Day was a great example of integrating wellbeing within business and providing opportunities for families to have fun and be active together

We were grateful to be able to work alongside Council staff and The Roading Team in a whole of community collective approach

We all have a role to play in building healthier communities together

The community has been telling us that they are so proud of our green spaces and recreation areas and they relished the opportunity to be involved in the planting day

Families want opportunities to get out and be active together while contributing to the community and the environment

Delving Deeper the Wreck of the Endeavour

THE Southland Museum building may appear quiet on the outside but work progresses at a rapid pace within its walls In addition to getting all of the collections ready to move the team has also been working to fulfil research requests made prior to the museum closure in April 2018 Supporting research is vital not only as part of the museumrsquos commitment to community outcomes but also to expand our knowledge of the collections that we care for and invite fresh perspectives

One such researcher who has been drawn to our collections is Kurt Bennett a New Zealand maritime archaeologist who is currently studying towards his PHD at Flinders University in Adelaide One of three vessels that Kurt is looking at as part of his research is the Endeavour a former trade ship that was wrecked in Facile Harbour Tamatea Dusky Sound in 1795

While often overshadowed in history by its namesake the Endeavour commanded by Captain Cook the Facile Harbour Endeavour plays a significant role in maritime history Constructed in London in 1771 the ship is associated with the English East India Company (EEIC) in whose service it sailed until around 1788 It is regarded as New Zealandrsquos first European shipwreck and expands our knowledge about late eighteenth century English merchant ship construction

Today 25 large fragments of the shiprsquos hull and numerous small fragments can be found in the care of the Southland Museum and Art Gallery The majority of this material is held on behalf of the Department of Conservation Southland Conservancy who became responsible for the timbers after an illegal salvage operation was discovered in the 1970s

In addition to charting the wider history of the vessel Kurt has a particular interest in the design elements and ship technologies used Working in partnership with the Collections Team Kurt has recorded the timbers using various techniques including annotated sketches photography scaled timberfeature drawings and photogrammetry With the permission of the Department of Conservation and the Ministry for Culture and Heritage samples have also been sent to the University of Adelaide and BIAX Consult in the Netherlands for analysis enabling us to identify for the first time the types of wood metals and fibres used in its construction

BY KIMBERLEY STEPHENSON Southland Museum and Art Gallery Collections Manager

The new custom-built storage units housing the Endeavour fragments

While research is ongoing a milestone was reached on 18 October when Kurt presented a joint paper on our work at the Australasian Institute for Maritime Archaeology conference in Brisbane Using the Endeavour as a case study the paper focused on the research potential of museum collections and opening pathways to reconnect them to wider historical narratives people and places It also highlighted the practical benefits of the project to the museum including the close assessment of these artefacts and the construction of new storage units The paper was well received and generated a lot of interest amongst the attendees

This is an exciting step in sharing this work with the wider community ndash and one that we hope to build on as the project progresses over the next year

Liquid Cafeacute joins keto crazeBY JENNA PADGET Liquid Cafeacute Team LeaderKETO seems to be the new craze low carb high fat diet which starts to burn fat instead of carbs when on a weight loss journey

We figured that seeing as we are a fitness facility it would be silly not to give this a try

We started off with Peanut Butter (cups) fat bombs and Sausage Rolls and muffins not realising how well it would go

By the end of the day our first batch of sausage rolls had sold out and half of our peanut butter cups and our muffins had sold

We could not believe how well it took off

After a lot of comments to us in-store we were asked if we were going to continue Keto and broaden the variety

You should come down and try it out - whether or not yoursquore on a weight loss journey this food is super delicious and you will be coming back for more
