Mahamrityunjaya (Great Death-Conquering) Mantra

MYSTIC

This very special Mantra was given to me by a close friend here, i've been so positively affected by it, I cannot help but continuesharing it - I definitely recommend taking the time and patience to learn in it's ancient form of Sanskrit.

The Mahamrityunjaya Mantra (Sanskrit:  महाम   ृ य    ु ं जय   मं त, Mahāmṛtyuṃjaya Mantra "great death-conquering mantra"), also calledthe Tryambakam Mantra, is a verse of the Rigveda (RV 7.59.12).It is addressed to Tryambaka "the three-eyed one", an epithetof Rudra, later identified with Shiva.[1][2] The verse also recurs in the Yajurveda (TS 1.8.6.i; VS 3.60)[1]

The mantra was found by Rishi Markandey. It was a secret Mantra, and Rishi Markandey was the only one in the world whoknew this Mantra. The Moon was once in trouble, cursed by King Daksh. Rishi Markandey gave the Mahamritryunjay Mantra toSati, Daksh's daughter, for the Moon. This is how the mantra came into common knowledge.

The mantra reads:

In Devanagari:ॐ  यबकम    ् यजामह     े स    ु िगधम    ् प    िु वध   नम    ् उवा   िकमव   बधनान    ् म   ृ योम    ु ीय   माम तात    ्

In (IAST transliteration):Om tryambakaṃ yajāmahe sugandhiṃ puṣṭi-vardhanamurvārukam iva bandhanān mṛtyormukṣīya māmṛtāt

In some Hindu Religious books the complete mantra has been mentioned as:-

"OM Hrom Om Joom Sah Bhurbhuvah Swh Om tryambakam yajāmahe sugandhim pushti-vardhanam urvā rukamiva bandhanānmrityormukshīya māmritāt Bhurbhuvah Swarom Joom Sah Hrom Om"

This great mantra dedicated to Rudra as Mrityunjaya is found in the Rig Veda. It is called the Maha Mrityunjaya mantra, theGreat Death-Conquering mantra. It is a mantra that has many names and forms. It is called the Rudra mantra, referring to thefurious aspect of Shiva; the Tryambakam mantra, alluding to Shiva's three eyes; and it is sometimes known as the Mrita-Sanjivini mantra because it is a component of the "life-restoring" practice given to the primordial sage Shukra after he hadcompleted an exhausting period of austerity. The Maha Mrityunjaya mantra is hailed by the sages as the heart of the Veda.

Along with the Gayatri mantra it holds the highest place among the many mantras used for contemplation and meditation

Word to Word Meaning of Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra

ॐ aum = is a sacred/mystical syllable in Sanatan Dharma or Indian religions, i.e. Hinduism, Jainism, and Buddhismtryambakam = the three-eyed one (accusative case)

yajāmahe = We worship, adore, honor, revere

sugandhim = sweet smelling, fragrant (accusative case)puṣṭi = A well-nourished condition, thriving, prosperous, fullness of lifevardhanam = One who nourishes, strengthens, causes to increase (in health, wealth, well-being); who gladdens, exhilarates, and restores health; a good gardener

urvārukam = pumpkin <a kind of Indian vegetable> (in the accusative case)iva = like, just as

urvārukam: 'urva' means "vishal" or big and powerful or deadly. 'arukam' means 'disease'. Thus urvārukam means deadly andoverpowering diseases. (The pumpkin interpretation given in various places is also correct for the word urvārukam, but not aptfor this mantra). The diseases are also of three kinds caused by the influence (in the negative) of the three guṇas and areignorance (avidyā), falsehood (asat, as even though Vishnu is everywhere, we fail to perceive Him and are guided by our sightand other senses) and weaknesses (ṣaḍripu, a constraint of this physical body and Shiva is all powerful).

bandhanān = "from captivity" {i.e. from the stem of the cucumber} (of the gourd); (the ending is actually long a then -d whichchanges to n/anusvara because of sandhi)

bandhanān means bound down. Thus read with urvārukam iva, it means 'I am bound down just as by deadly and overpoweringdiseases'.

mrityor = From deathmukshīya = Free, liberate

mā = notamritāt = [with] immortality, emancipation

This mantra... is obsessive...

Here's a poem the words inspired:

Divine we adore the three eyed one,

Fragrant sweet in his prosperous life,

The one who strengthens, the one who heals.

The three disease, are like my binding prison;

ignorance, falsehood, and weakness.

Held in the ground I am, from death not liberate.

With emancipation, comes immortality.

@Wisa yes u can first get used to the audio with your own technique and then try and pronounce it. As Tris did

it if there's a will there's a way!

But this mantra is actually very easy and best said everyday at dawn and sunset 108 times. I 'll try and

break it down if it helps :-

  Om Trayam -bakam Yaja- mahe

  Sughan -dhim Pushti -var-dhanam

  Urva Ruka -miva Bhan -dhanam

  Mrit-yor Muk-shi Maam - Ritat

Good luck

when eyes are open) and the chanting of the video which affects me and I use this technique described here in

the video :

"There is no sound, no vibration. All around you is the open blue sky, the vast space of pure consciousness. You

have nothing to do there but sit down quiet and still, like one of the gods, peaceful within and without, and close

your eyes."

Yes this Mantra is great, usually used whens it is a solar eclipse or when people are sick or to prolong their

life or gain all around strength.

But I recommend it's best to focus on the particular area of sickness for faster healing effects!

Here is a set of mantra's if u have any pain or sickness in ur body

http://www.esotericonline.net/group/mantras/forum/topics/eliminatio...

Here there are many other different kinds of mantras if u have any long term or some incurable diseases

  http://forum.spiritualindia.org/mantra-for-all-diseases-t22144.10.h...

It is very important to pronounce these mantras in the right way and when to say them

and how many times to repeat them its usually 108 times. But if you require Siddhi of any mantra

then it would vary depending on the mantra and your purpose.

Overall its also very important for the western world to acknowledge the potent healing or

effects of the sanskrit language. As Sanskrit is known the language of the Gods and likewise

Hebrew the language of Angels.

Thanks for sharing this, people who are interested in this but have a hard time pronouncing or

any such sort can join the group Mantra's and ask me to clarify their doubts. Many Blessings!!!

This is my favourite Mantra of all time...beautiful.....always only a moment away from my lips. Before I drive,

before I work, when things go awry, in the depths of despair, to give thanks, to greet the day....it is a great

universal healing mantra.

Om Tryambakam Yajamahe

Sugandhim Pushti vardhanam

Urvarukamiva Bhandhanan .....(or Bhandhanat)

Mrityor Mukshi YamAmritat

The translation I have in my mind is... ''We worship the three-eyed One, who is fragrant and who nourishes all

beings. May our deaths/liberation be as easy and natural as when the ripe cucumber is liberated from the vine.''

I juts thought I would add this lovely visualisation my teacher gave for chanting Mahamrityunjaya, as it is so

pleasant..

Imagine that you are in the Himalayas, sitting alone beside the crystal clear, dark blue

Manasarovar lake. Before you, in the distance, is the snow-capped peak of Mount

Kailash, the presence of which is overpowering. (Pause) Surrender to it and feel that you

are in the home of the gods, the abode of Lord Shiva. (Pause) There is no sound, no

vibration. A ll around you is the open blue sky, the vast space of pure consciousness.

You have nothing to do there but sit down quiet and still, like one of the gods, peaceful

within and without, and close your eyes. (Pause) Become aware of the presence of Lord

Shiva (supreme consciousness) all around you and penetrating you, as you sit in your

chosen asana, ready to chant the Mahamrityunjaya mantra. (Pause)

Your head and spine are upright and straight and your hands are resting on the knees in

chin or jnana mudra. You are watching the breath coming and going in the nostrils as

the mind becomes more and more calm and steady and relaxed. (Pause) In your right hand you are holding a mala with which to count the 108 Shiva mantras, and your

awareness is fixed at bhrumadhya (the eyebrow centre) where it will remain throughout

the chanting. (Pause) Before commencing, you will chant the mantra Om, long and

deeply, three times. Then you will start chanting the Mahamrityunjaya mantra,

visualizing Lord Shiva (or your ishta devata/symbol) throughout, at the eyebrow centre.

 Ending the chanting

When you have finished chanting, sit for a few minutes in the profound stillness and

silence of the Himalayas, which lies within your own self. (Pause) Now become aware of

the protective psychic energy field which you have created around yourself with the

chanting of the Mahamrityunjaya mantra. (Pause) Know that you will carry that

protection with you wherever you go until you chant again next week. Think of anyone

whom you would like to include within this field, someone sick or in need of help.

Project the energy out to them. (Pause) Feel that Lord Shiva or the power of pure

consciousness is sitting in your heart, radiating his blessings and energy out to you, and

to them also. (Pause) Mentally, bow to him and feel the power of his mantra pervading

your entire being. (Pause) May the Mahamrityunjaya mantra uplift your life and help you

(and others) overcome all the difficulties that may lay before you.

Thank you for your post. Om Shanti.
