MagnetsS3P2. Students will investigate magnets and how they

affect other magnets and common objects.

a. Investigate to find common objects that are attracted to magnets.

b. Investigate how magnets attract and repel each other.

Essential Questions:

What are magnets, and how do they interact?

What materials are attracted to magnets?

How much do you know?

Let’s play True or False!

Page 4: Magnets

True or False?

1. When magnets pull on or push away each other, it is called magnetic force. (independent inquiry)

True or False?

2. A magnet is something that creates a magnetic force (push or pull). (independent inquiry)

3. Magnets are often made of plastic. (independent inquiry)

4. Magnets come in only one size and shape. (independent

inquiry)

5. The parts of a magnet where the magnetic force is strongest are called poles. (independent inquiry)

True or False?

6. Same poles (N and N or S and S) attract.

7. Magnets can push or pull objects without touching them at all. (independent

inquiry)

8. Opposite poles (N and S)repel.

True or False?9. A magnetic field is the area of

magnetic force around a magnet. When one magnet enters the magnetic field of another magnet it is either attracted or repelled.

True or False?

10. Earth is a giant magnet. That is why we use compass to find directions. The compass always points to north of Earth.

11. A magnet does not attract another magnet.

12. Magnets attract all metals.

13. When all the particles of an object line up with the magnet’s magnetic field the object becomes a temporary magnet.

14. Magnetic fields cannot pass through all kinds of materials (solids, gases, and liquids).

Essential Question:

What are magnets, and how do they interact?

Page 19: Magnets

Let’s do the Inquiry Activity 1! Let’s predict:

A. What happens when one magnet is near another magnet?

B. How do different parts of magnets interact? 1. Bring the north pole (N) of one magnet close to

the north pole (N) of another magnet. Record what happens.

2. Try it again. Record what happens again. 3. Predict: What do you think will happen if you bring

the south poles of the magnet near each other? 4. Prove whether your prediction is correct or not.

Record what happens. (go on to the next slide)

Page 20: Magnets

5. Predict: What will happen if you bring the north pole of one magnet to the south pole of the other magnet?

6. Prove and record what happens. 7. What happens when like poles (south-south

or north-north) of 2 magnets are brought together?

8. What happens when unlike poles (s-n or n-s) are brought together?

What is a magnet and how does it interact with another magnet?

Read pages 224 - 226 of your book. Write north on one hand and south on your other

hand. When I put my hand out with the north writing on it and I say “repel” you will show me the correct hand. When I say “attract” you will put out the correct hand.

Essential Questions:

What materials are attracted to magnets?

Page 23: Magnets

Let’s do the Inquiry Activity 2! Predict which objects are magnetic (attracted to

magnets). Put these objects in the correct column.

Now let’s use a strong magnet to check your prediction.

Which objects are attracted to magnets? Why? Fill out the chart. Let’s read pages 232-234 of your book to know

more about objects that are attracted to magnets.
