Carbon Fiberfrom Hexcel

Magnamite® carbon fibers from Hexcel are produced in a continuousoperation in which the polyacrylonitrile precursor undergoes a series ofprecisely controlled processes. Exposure to extremely high temperatureschemically changes the precursor, yielding high strength-to-weight andhigh stiffness-to-weight properties through oxidation, carbonization andgraphitization. The successive surface treatment and sizing stagesimprove bonding and handleability. The resulting carbon fiber is strongerthan steel, lighter than aluminum and as stiff as titanium. It can besupplied in two basic forms:

Continuous FiberContinuous fiber can be combined

with virtually all the thermoset andthermoplastic resin systems. Theyare used for weaving, braiding, filamentwinding applications, uni-directionaltapes and prepreg tow for fiberplacement.

Chopped FiberChopped fibers are used in compression

and injection molding compounds to produce machine parts, gears and chemical valves. The finished productshave excellent corrosion, creep and fatigueresistance plus high strength and stiffnesscharacteristics.
