Chapter 1 - The Power of IntentionWhen we talk about the benefits of using Bio-Universal energy to effect a positive change in our lives, itis important that we acknowledge that we are taking a particular power into our own hands and withthat comes a consideration of ethical boundaries. Even if you simply pray for an outcome that harmssomeone else, we would wager that most of society would consider that to be unethical. The name orface that is applied to your interaction with God is less important than how you use that connection. Aswith any energy, it can be used to help or it can be used to harm. Think of the energy that runs throughthe wires in your home. You can use it warm yourself, cook your food, or turn on a light to read a book. You could use that same electricity to do incredible harm. The energy is neutral and it is the intention ofthe user and how they use the energy that determines whether the action is positive or negative.

There are many ways that people connect their own energy with the energy of The Universe. Prayer isone of the means of connecting with God and is certainly the most socially acceptable means. Foranyone who engages the Divine in pursuit of a particular outcome, the integrity of their intent is what isvital to the outcome and defines the ethical quality of their actions. Considering the circumstancesbelow, which do you feel is ethical?

A Pagan (“person of the earth,” meaning someone of the nature based religion who is not a Christian)who connects to God by way of spell work to help a neighborhood family find a safe and affordablehome?

A Christian minister who prays for the homosexuals and Pagans in his community to be exterminated?

A Witch who mixes herbs together and prays over them to heal a friend who has a fever?

A Christian who goes to church every Sunday, does fund-raising for the schools, but is unfaithful toher husband and is a closet kleptomaniac?

A Pagan who casts a spell to get her boss to fall ill?

A Christian who prays that God will help him become the person he wants to be and attract a lifetimemarriage partner?

A Druid who honors the astrological passages, honors the earth through tremendous efforts towardecology, and uses personal energy to get a woman at his workplace to fall in love with him against herwill.

A Christian who believes that we are put on this earth to emulate Jesus Christ and as a result, cares forthe sick and the homeless, teaches English as a second language, and donates to the local batteredwomen’s shelter.

The point of this exercise is to say that no one is “good” or “bad” simply because of the route or religionthey take to connect to God/The Universe/Goddess. It is personal intent and how that intent manifestsinto action and form in the outside world that colors the integrity of a person, regardless of their faith. All of these people mentioned above are, either knowingly or unknowingly, using Bio-Universal energyto create a desired outcome. Some are ethical and some are not. This is by no means a trick question.

Page 9: Magical Ethics and Protection - Katrina Rasbold

Upon objective consideration, it is easy to see which of those people have good intent and which havebaneful intent.

When we consider the ethics of working with Bio-Universal energy, we have to keep in mind thatenergy is power. When there is a problem with the electric company’s equipment and our lights go out, what do we say? “The power is out!” What we really mean is that the energy current into our house hasbeen disrupted. Through energy, including Bio-Universal energy, we have access to tremendous powerthat can create change. The ethics lie in what type of changes we choose to create.

In addition to taking the ethical use of Bio-Universal energy into very strong consideration simplybecause we want to be good people, there is yet another motivation. One of the properties of Bio-Universal energy is that the free will of others and the “Greatest Good” concept within the Universe willoften slow down or even ground your own Bio-Universal energy work. You actually serve yourselfbetter by following basic ethical guidelines because you will have a stronger and more directed energyflow without the obstacles created by unethical behavior. In our book The Properties of MagicalEnergy, we fully explore all of the factors that can speed up and enhance or slow down and groundyour Bio-Universal energy flow.

As we mentioned at the beginning of this book, Bio-Universal energy is very, very similar in nature andbehavior to other forms or energy in our universe. Like electricity, for instance, it can be used toimprove our standard of living or to harm others or ourselves.

Just like electricity, the energy within us is neutral. The energy that comes from The Divine is, by itsvery nature, directed toward our own greatest good. We can use our own bio-energy to accentuate theexisting flow of energy that comes from God and take us toward our greatest good at a much faster, cleaner progression than if we contributed nothing to the process. We can also guide the direction andform that progression takes.

Likewise, we can use our own bio-energy to fight against the flow toward our greatest good, argue withGod about how our lives should be, and slow down the process of getting there or worse, to attempt toharm or control others. Just as malicious is the practice of using Bio-Universal energy to affect a changein our lives without consideration of how it might influence other people. It is up to us to determinehow we use our own personal energy and that is the very specific and directed power of free will.Interestingly enough, when we use our energy in an ethical way, the pathway to our goal has less clutterand the energy moves faster. The intent is vital to the outcome.

It is essential that we fully understand the accountability and universal perspective that is required toachieve the greatest benefit from using Bio-Universal energy. When you work within ethical boundaries, the benefits to you are significantly greater and the karmic blowback you may incurred is reduceddrastically or even eliminated. It not only serves the Universe and the overall greatest good for you towork with this energy ethically, but it benefits YOU most of all.

What you learn through the remainder of this chapter are universally accepted guidelines for the use ofenergy to affect a particular result. Yes, there are “guidelines” or “rules,” but the bulk of what isconsidered to be ethical practice comes down to common sense, acceptance and respect of another’splace in the world, both spiritually and mundanely, and making certain your own intention behind theenergy work you do is pure and untainted by any kind of malevolence.

Regarding our own intent, we can lie to ourselves, we can lie to others, but we cannot lie to TheUniverse. Ultimately, our true colors and intentions reveal and we are always accountable for how weuse our personal energy for manifestation.

Page 10: Magical Ethics and Protection - Katrina Rasbold

This is the truest nature of the process known as “karma.” Just as the Golden Rule states, “What you dowill come back to you”, so it is essential that the intention and energy you put out into the world reflectsa power you want to have present around you.

This is nothing less than simple cause and effect. Turn on a light switch to complete that circuit andprovide a path for the energy current and a light comes on. No harm, no foul, right? The act of turningon a light switch is neutral. It is the intention behind the turning on of the light switch that is helpful, neutral, or baneful. Turn on the light switch so that you can see to read a book is likely helpful orneutral. Turn on the light switch knowing that your friend, who is changing clothes in the room, willnow be fully illuminated and revealed in full nudity to the people on the street outside the house andembarrassed is likely baneful and cruel. The action is the same, but the intention behind it is vastlydifferent.

Our own experiences throughout a number of different spiritual paths have shown these guidelines thatfollow to be universally true.

Chapter 2 - Harm None‘An it harm none, do what ye will.”

This specific directive or some form of it is common in many faiths and is a seemingly simple precept. At first consideration, it seems extremely loose and free compared to other dictates. You can do anythingyou want as long as you do not harm anyone.

What you have to consider, however, is that “harming” someone is a multi-level concept. It premises theidea that harm can occur on all five levels of existence: physical, emotional, sexual, mental, andspiritual. In our interactive society, we could also include “social.” Without bringing any kind ofphysical harm to a person, we can destroy a reputation with a few words or a careless accusation. Wecan say things to a child that we forget an hour later, but they carry with them for their entire life. Wecan participate in an unhealthy dynamic long after we recognize that it is an unfair balance simplybecause continuing the relationship the way it is serves to bring us tremendous benefit, even if it is at theexpense of another.

All of these actions are common in everyday life, even among “good” people. “Harm none” are twovery power packed words that should not be taken lightly, particularly in energy work where thoughtcreates form and actions bring karmic retribution.

Sadly, it is almost inevitable that we will harm others if we believe in the 3rd law of Newtonian physics:For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. If we work to get a particular job that we wantand would be beneficial to us, someone else does not get the job and who knows? It could possibly besomeone who needs the job worse than we do. If we work to create an opening in a long line of trafficto allow us to merge, several other people must change their driving to accommodate us.

Whenever we work to bring something about, it affects the lives of others on some level, even if in anextremely negligible way. If you slow down to allow another person to merge onto a crowded freeway,it likely has very little impact on you. If you are driving a laboring woman to the hospital and youcannot access the correct exit due to traffic blocking you, you likely have a different reaction. What weconstrue to be harmful is completely relative to the circumstances.

“Harms none” is not a fully realistic mandate, but it is certainly a great premise to hold as youraspiration. You are going to occasionally step on a bug or accidentally have fourteen items on a “twelveor fewer” check-out lane. “Harms none” is, however, an important mindset that one should embrace toeffectively and ethically work with Bio-Universal energy. It reminds you always that what you do has animpact of some major or minor degree. The ripple effect is definitely a prominent consideration whenusing Bio-Universal energy. We simply must keep in our minds the effects, immediate and long term, ofwhat we manifest.

The ethical guidance with “harms none” is that we never use Bio-Universal energy in such a way that weknow will deliberately harm another. Remember the power of intention as the foundation of our ethicalgroundwork. If you do not willfully intend harm, then you are more than halfway there. To be ethicallyresponsible, however, you must also consider inadvertent harm that can occur from your actions andproceed from there, in honest consideration of the degree of harm or likelihood of that harm tomanifest.

On the other hand, if you think about this too intently, you may end up frozen in a paralysis ofconsideration of possible outcomes. You have to draw the line somewhere between over-analysis andirresponsible energy work. Weigh the pros and cons of what you are considering and make a

Page 14: Magical Ethics and Protection - Katrina Rasbold

responsible choice. You cheat yourself if you refuse to move forward in your life, take no chances, andmake no changes because you are afraid of possible outcomes. You cheat others if you barge recklesslyinto magic, prayer, or other energy use without due consideration for how your energy work couldaffect others.

As an example, if you are having a conflict with a neighbor that you want to have resolved, you couldsend out energy to have them forcefully removed from their home. It is not hard to see that an actionsuch as this, which many people take out of anger and self-righteousness, not to mention self-protection, is an unethical approach. It is willfully manipulating the life of someone else against his orher own free will. It also imposes energy of intention around you that is fearful, angry, vengeful, andmanipulative. Even if you are angry, it is your obligation as an ethical Bio-Universal energy practitioner,to process that emotion and to establish a neutral mindset in which to begin your work. Should you takeaction to protect yourself and resolve the conflict? Absolutely. Should you do so in such a way that youviolate their free will, even though they have righteously pissed you off? No.

An alternative is to send out energy to manifest a wonderful opportunity for your neighbor to move intoa better home elsewhere where they have no impact on you. This not only comes from a place of overallkindness and generosity, but also gives them the choice to accept or refuse. Granted, the more invitingand alluring the opportunity happens to be, the more inclined they are going to be to accept thisdelicious option. So in essence, the harder you work to send them a good thing, the more likely it is tobenefit you, plus the energy that works up around you is positive rather than negative. The headspaceyou are in when you perform energy work is vital to the processing of your intent and shifting from abaneful to a generous mindset changes the whole flow of your intention.

Chapter 3 – Karma and Three-Fold LawA basic tenet that remains constant and is one of the few things agreed upon by most religions is thatwhat you do comes back to you in varying degrees of severity. For many paths, it is a “threefold” factor:“Bread throw upon the waters of life comes back to you threefold” or “The Law of Three.”

This means that whatever you put out into the Universe comes back to you and draws a similarexperience to you. Therefore, you should always proceed into the Bio-Universal energy work processwith the full knowledge that whatever you send out in to the world is going to come back home toroost, likely in duplicate. This assurance keeps us in a mindset of sending out only positive magicalwork rather than what could be a harmful practice.

I have lived long enough to know that what the character of Daniel Laruso in The Karate Kid says isvery true, “It’s comin’ around!” No, there is no guarantee that you will be given the luxury of seeinghungry Karma with its sharp teeth bared and snapping come around for all the people who have everwronged you. What can you can be assured of is that whether it happens while you are looking or not, itis going to happen. A good idea to keep in the back of your mind at all times when it seems as thoughothers are not “getting theirs” is that you never, ever really know what goes on behind closed doors inanother person’s world. The best course of action is to work on being the most ethical person you canbe so that YOU are not forced to deal with negative karmic backlash and let other people take care oftheir own karma. The Law of Returns has managed just fine for as long as humans have existed withoutneeding you to be its sheriff.

One of the most common ways that we bring down the force of negative karma is by using Bio-Universal energy to attempt to force others to do certain things, feel certain things, or behave in certainways rather than taking the route that is always more effective: working on ourselves. The more weattend to our own business and our own behaviors and reactions, the better our results will be. Here’swhy…

Working with Bio-Universal energy to control the life or actions of another person takes a tremendousamount of personal energy. It can be done, sure; however, the effect, if there is any, is normally veryshort-lived and at great personal costs. It is always best to shape your energy work around free willchoices and opportunities for the other person rather than direct control. Failure to do so can seriouslyundermine your efforts to achieve a positive result, which should really always be your ultimate goal forthe situation. It is not your job to “teach” other people how to behave or render lessons upon them onhow to “be” in the world.

Karma is a strong balancing factor embraced by nearly all organized and disorganized religions to somedegree and there is a reason for that. It is because people from all walks of life and countries all over theworld saw evidence of this great universal law. We have tremendous accountability for our own actionsand to some degree, our thoughts, as thought is the beginning of the manifestation of form. Karma tellsus that what we do affects not only others, but ourselves. Karma always, always finds its way around.Just because we do not see it at work does not mean it isn’t happening. The Universe is a perfect, self-correcting process.

Do not contaminate your own magical process by bringing control and negativity into it. Leaveretribution and vengeance for The Universe and you will not have any regrets as the situation plays out.It may take time, but rest assured that the karmic scale will balance and if you are lucky, you will bearound to watch it happen.

Chapter 4 - Working For Someone Without Their PermissionMany people will ask, “Do you mind if I pray for you?” This is a very gracious and respectful request. We cannot count, however, the number of prayer requests we receive through (usually mass mailed)emails or on Facebook that go something like this:

“Dear Saints. Please pray for my brother who [fill in the blank here with ‘lost his job,’ ‘is goingthrough a divorce,’ ‘has diabetes,’ ‘is having surgery’ etc]. He is a good person and does not deservefor this to happen.”

First of all, anyone who knows us knows that we are far from saints, although the presumption isprecious and appreciated. Second, although we can objectively render judgment about the character ofothers, who are we to decide what a person does or does not deserve to have happen? Third, and mostvital to this chapter, we have to wonder whether the person sending out this request has permission toharness the energy of a large number of people together in an effort to change the other person’s life insome significant way. Prayer circles work for a reason and that is partly because of Newton’s SecondLaw of Motion that has to do with energy and force. This law says that when more than one force isapplied to an energy flow, the aggregate force will be compounded by the full impact of the added force. This means that when one person uses Bio-Universal energy on behalf of someone else, there is aparticular measure of force exacted. When two people, or three people, or four people use Bio-Universal energy toward exactly the same goal, the force of the energy is doubled, tripled, andquadrupled respectively.

At first glance, we would assume that anyone would appreciate a giant influx of positive energydesigned to make their life better. On the other hand, we do not know what the target of all of thisenergy wants or needs or thinks. We only know what the person asking on their behalf wants for them.

“Pray for all of the people who lost their homes in the tsunami.” “Pray for all of the hungry people.”“Pray for all of the homeless people.” “Pray for our troops.” “Pray for the President.” Every day, we areinundated with requests to spend our prayer tokens on others, sometimes en masse. This is in additionto the time we spend praying for what we need for ourselves. Universal and personal energy is, indeed, infinite and never-ending as long as there is life in our bodies. We also know, however, that there aretimes when we nearly exhaust our personal energy resources to the point that it is nearly impossible forus to do even one more thing. Using Bio-Universal energy, even when done right, can be depleting anddoes use a good-sized portion of the replenishable personal energy flows through us and that we storewithin us. We do not want to deplete our energy stores on a regular basis, even though they will bereplenished. Absolutely, we want to keep our energy moving so that it is always fresh and new ratherthan stored and stagnant. We should not, however, drain ourselves dry on a regular basis and that is whyit is essential that we monitor where our energy output goes and be selective about where we do ourmost vigorous Bio-Universal energy work.

Just like with medical decisions, if a person is unconscious and unable to specify their wishes, it isreasonable for someone who knows them well to make choices on their behalf. If, however, the personis awake, aware, and conscious, then they should always give permission before such an effort isenacted. After all, as with medical procedures, it is something that greatly affects their own life and assuch, one should not initiated this type of action on their behalf without their permission.

Page 21: Magical Ethics and Protection - Katrina Rasbold

So What Should You Do When Asked To Pray or Work For Someone?

Since asking people to pray for another is a routine practice in our culture, how do you navigate thoseethical waters without coming off as a complete jerk? No problem. I have got you covered.

When you are asked to pray for someone, it is appropriate to ask, “Do you have permission from thisperson to ask me to pray for them?” It is also very appropriate to pray or do spell work for a personwithout their permission provided you amend the prayer to say, “I ask that the greatest good comeforward for this person in their hour of need” rather than identify a specific outcome for the personother than whatever God decides is for their own greatest good. This lends positive energy withoutcontributing directive energy.

You should never take it upon yourself to decide what another person needs or wants. It is natural forus to assume what another person wants based on what we would want in the same situation.Assumptions, however, can be a good way to get in trouble. If someone asks you to work on their ownbehalf, ask them specifically what outcome they want to ultimately occur. If nothing else, this could takeaway generalities in their own minds and get them to focus on a specific outcome they desire. Too often, people approach Deity with the attitude of “FIX IT!” rather than even knowing exactly what they dowant to have happen. All they know is they do not like the current set of circumstances.

A lack of clarity about where your energy is directed and why, as well as sending energy toward a targetthat may or may not want the end goal you are creating, is a good way to create conflict and obstacles onthe path of the successful accomplishment of your goal.

Another point that bears making is that you should NEVER lend your energy blindly to a cause withoutknowing how that energy is going to be used. “I am having a crisis and I need prayers. I can’t talk aboutit, but I need your help.” It is fine to pray for a person under very general terms for well-being andpositive outcome. You should not sign over a black energy check to someone without knowing whatthey are doing with your investment. If they request something beyond basic good wishes, you deservespecifics.

It is very helpful when the target of your prayers connects into your energy process and takes an activerole regarding its use. This creates a different sort of dynamic than the usual “funnel energy into thecause nonstop because someone asked you to” approach.

One would think that healing energy would always be appropriate; therefore, asking permission to do itwould be irrelevant. As a higher thinking person, however, there are other factors we have to consider:

What if this person is supposed to be learning something important from their lesson that wassupposed to manifest through their illness?

What if the illness is for the person’s greatest good? (Such as a person who has been working far toohard and needs the rest)

What if the person does not, on some level, want to get better right now? (Such as a person who needsthe attention the illness brings)

What if the illness is intended to bring focus onto a different illness in the body that can be managed ifdetected right now. (Such as a cancer that is found on a detailed examination for an unrelated set ofsymptoms)

We never know why the Universe does things the way it does and therefore, it is always best to askpermission first and to add, “If it is for the greatest good” at the end of the energy work.

Chapter 5 - Using Bio-Universal Energy for Personal GainOften, students ask us if it is ethical or honorable to use Bio-Universal energy for personal gain. Ouranswer is invariably, “YES!” but that sentence goes on to say, “… provided you do so with a good heartand ethical approach.”

Do people pray to God for their life to change in some significant way that is to their own benefit?Absolutely and all the time. Using Bio-Universal energy is no different. The truth of it is that TheUniverse/God/Goddess wants us to succeed and be happy. Why in the world would God care if we arehappy or not? Because of the way a microcosm affects a macrocosm. When individuals succeed and arehappy, it furthers the evolution and overall health of the entire human race. Just as a human body can behealthy and then fall into illness because of one malignant cell, so is the human race affected by eachperson who is not living life to the fullest and existing in a place of joy and happiness.

Too often, people lay the fault for the unhappiness at the feet of God or of other people involved intheir lives. In reality, most of the time where we land and what happens to us is, in one way or another,a direct result of our own choices. We all know people who are professional victims. No matter whatnegative thing happens to them, it is never, ever their fault and they outright reject any accountability fortheir circumstances. All of us adhere to this frailty to some degree and it is a natural consequence ofbeing human that we do not want to be wrong. This tendency, however, is always easier to see in othersthan in ourselves. When we accept that a great deal of our own success and happiness, as well as ourdisappointment and failure, is completely in our hands, we begin to see how we can change our ownlives with the intent of our focus.

Often, people believe that they are at the mercy of their emotions and cannot control how they feel orbehave. That is the belief system of a lazy and irresponsible spirit. We always have a choice in how weact and even what we think and feel. Mastering our emotions and our behavior is truly the first steptowards taking control of our circumstances.

Stepping up and claiming the life we want to live and crafting that life through the use of Bio-Universalenergy is not only ethical, it is humanitarian! We further the wellness of the human race when we live alife based in joy, accountability, and prosperity. Harnessing the energy within us and taking it God forblessings is one of the most powerful ways that we can create the life we want to live.

An exception to this is how it makes YOU feel. If a person harbors guilt or shame for creating abeautiful life for himself or herself, this can contaminate the Bio-Universal energy process. In that case,it is best to go back into learning to master the thoughts and emotions that affect your happiness.

The reality, however, that we have seen manifest over and over and over again is that YES!!! Yes, yes,YES! You SHOULD use Bio-Universal energy for personal gain because God wants us to be happy andthe more content we are with our own lives, the more positive our energy flow into the Universe willbe!

Chapter 6 – Bio-Universal Energy Ethics in SummaryHow do you use Bio-Universal energy to craft a beautiful life for yourself while staying within a safeand ethical margin? Like this:

~ Make certain your intent is well stated and clear of any malice or outright manipulation of others

~ Obtain permission whenever possible before working on someone else’s behalf

~ Consider carefully the potential impacts your work might have on others

~ Be prepared to accept full accountability for what you do

~ Do not enact any process toward another person that you would not wish into your own life

Page 28: Magical Ethics and Protection - Katrina Rasbold

Page 30: Magical Ethics and Protection - Katrina Rasbold

Chapter 7 - Cleansing, Blessing, and Protecting Your HomeIt is important – vital even – that we work within ethical guidelines as described above when you areengaging Bio-Universal energy. The problem is that you cannot always be sure that other people arefollowing the same guidelines. It is rare, but there are such things as concerted and focused, psychicattacks where someone intentionally sends negative intention and “bad juju” toward another.

It is also a fact of day-to-day life that we do interact with other people on a regular basis, even if just tothe degree of passing them in stores or on the freeway. When we purchase an item from the store, wehave no way of knowing who handled it before us and what their thoughts, moods, or motives mightbe. It is likely that every day, we bring the energy of other people into our homes without even realizingit.

For these reasons, it is a good practice to routinely cleanse, bless, and protect your home so that theenergies within it remain stable, balanced, and related to our own internal energies. Maintaining thebalance of energies in your home and work space where the majority of your time is spent is a veryimportant behavior to foster when we are creating a healthy Bio-Universal energy practice.

Page 31: Magical Ethics and Protection - Katrina Rasbold

Creating Sacred Space

One of the most important factors in obtaining a clean and strong connection to the Divine to use Bio-Universal energy is making certain that your home is a place where you feel safe, sacred, and magical. Some of this lies in the décor itself and making certain that you choose your color schemes, furniture, and accent pieces so that you are comfortable in your own home. If you share your home with others, make sure to have at least one special place that you can call your own that is decorated in your ownstyle and preference.

Ideally, your home would be set up so that all areas of it are conducive to cultivating the Bio-Universalenergy flow. Have you ever noticed that when you move your furniture around, your entire home feelsdifferent from before? That is because the way you arrange your home creates an energetic field untoitself. The placement of the furniture and other objects in your home affects the energy of the entirehouse, even those areas that you do not move.

It is beneficial to have representations of the four elements (earth, air, fire, and water) all over yourhouse for balance. Each of these elements not only represents an aspect of nature, but is also acomplimentary energy to human life. Water is the flow of emotions and intuition. Fire is passion andcreativity. Air is intellect and efficiency. Earth is stability and prosperity. In a working circle, earth isopposite fire, so the stability and healing aspect of earth balance out the passion and excitement of fire.Water is opposite air, so its intuitive flow balances out the intellect of air. Within our home as well, thisbalance is beneficial on a psychological level.

There are many ways to represent the elements. A small cauldron, a goblet, a table fountain, or a shellcan represent water. A feather, wind chimes, ribbons, or depictions of the sun rising can represent air.Candles, lava rock or obsidian, red flowers, or your hearth can represent fire. Stones, plants, the colorsgreen and brown, and metals like iron or copper can represent earth.

Everyone has particular themes, colors, or objects that make them feel relaxed and secure. We enjoy thesound of water, so we have several fountains in our home. We are particular, however, because if thefountain has a mechanical sound that is distracting, it does not work for us. We like incense and candles,so they are usually burning when we are awake. Most of the time, the candles are also our Bio-Universalenergy at work on some project or another. We love depictions of Goddesses and fantasy-type artwork. We also love books and they are everywhere in our house.

In Katrina’s first marriage, her husband loved austere walls with an Ansel Adams print here and there. She decorated a corner of the garage to be her personal magical space. We have described our currenthome as looking as though a metaphysical shop and the super glue factory blew up at the same timebecause we have items hanging all over the walls, literally hundreds of figurines and statue, rocks,Himalayan sea salt lamps, incense censors, and all sorts of decorations everywhere. It is like walkingthrough a magical museum. It is not everyone’s taste, but it is ours and it cultivates our own internalenergy. We are fortunate that we share that same taste in decorating.

If that sounds financially extravagant, we can assure you, it is anything but. The beautiful items we areblessed to include in our home were nearly all gifts or purchased through careful shopping at thriftstores, eBay, estate sales, and bartering. You do not have to spend a lot of money to surround yourselfwith beautiful, magical items.

If, like us, however, you have a lot of stuff around, you have to make sure that you keep the areas cleanand tidy and that you have a flow through area for your energy to move. Large, open spaces withoutclutter embellishment do not require as much attention to allow the energy to move. The problem is that

Page 32: Magical Ethics and Protection - Katrina Rasbold

when you do have a lot of material around and about, it does not make much for the area to look junkyand cluttered.

Clutter, in fact, is one of the factors listed in our book The Properties of Magical Energy as what slowsdown Bio-Universal flow. Our brains take in energy and information from literally everything that isaround us. If you are in a wide, open, clean space, it is easier for you to focus on your on the Bio-Universal task at hand. If you are surrounded by many items, but each one makes you feel empoweredand magical, your focus and energy will not be compromised and may, in fact, be amplified. If you aresurrounded by stacks of things you need to get done, miscellaneous clutter that serves no real purpose,or worse, items that other people left all over your home, it is likely that your focus will suffer. This lessof a reflection of how “good” you are at working with Bio-Universal energy and more of a matter ofhuman nature and mental response.

As previously stated, the furniture arrangement in your home is important to the energy flow. Energycan become stuck and stagnant in empty corners behind furniture. It needs something to redirect it outof the corner, like a flower arrangement, lamp, decorative broom, wind chimes, hanging decoration, orother item.

Most people sleep better if the head of their bed is in the North or West wall of their bedroom. This isbecause North is associated with the element of earth and West is associated with the element of water.Fire and air, which are in the South and East respectively, tend to over stimulate creativity and activethought processes during sleep time.

T-Sections

If you happen to live at the intersection of an active “T” crossing, so that traffic stops directly in front ofyour home like this:

…you might notice that there is a good bit of irritation and frustration in your home. That is becausethere is a forceful energy that is barreling toward your home on a regular basis. Even though the vehiclestops, inertia carries the energy of the vehicle’s movement and to some degree, the people inside thevehicle, right into your home.

No, you do not have to move into a different house. To reflect this energy away from you, simply placesome small mirrors (the size of compact mirrors or even dental mirrors) against the front of your house.Small mirrors are often available in dollar stores in the floral or candle section and are used for placingstatues on them in an artful fashion. You can use duct tape to secure the mirrors to the front of yourhouse. Make certain that you do so in such a way that the light does not reflect into oncoming traffic andblind the drivers of any vehicles! The mirrors can be behind bushes, plants, or yard decorations as longas they are facing toward the oncoming traffic. They will redirect the energy even if the cars cannot seethem.

Cleansing Your Home

Houses are batteries that are able to hold energy generated within them for varying periods dependingboth on the construction of the house and the intensity of the energy. Everyone has, at one time oranother, walked into a room where two people have been fighting and picked up on the energy even ifthey are not saying a word. The energy of an argument or really, any kind of negativity including anger, fear, jealousy, self-doubt, etc, has an essence that can remain in the air like burnt toast or popcorn. Evenif you remove the offending cause, you can still tell it was there for a while after.

There are even times when the energy of someone who is not present, but wishes you ill-will, penetratesyour home. You might purchase an item that has collected negative energy from someone who lasttouched it. For that matter, it has been proven that when we watch something happen on TV or in amovie, we have the same physiological responses as if we actually experienced the event ourselves.

It is nearly impossible to shelter your house from all negative energy. Everyone works through theiremotions in different ways and so many different carriers can bring energy into your home that evenwith the highest level of diligence, one cannot not effectively monitor it all. Just as we sweep our floorsand polish our furniture, it is important that we keep our energy in our home clean as well.

The following instructions will lead you through an exercise to cleanse your home of negative energy, infuse it with positivity, and set up a boundary of protection around it to reduce the amount of negativitythat can enter.

To do a comprehensive job of cleansing your home, you will need these items:

A black candle (tea lights are fine)

A white candle

A blue or purple candle

Graveyard dirt, the dust from a brick, or salt. (Yes, we said “graveyard dirt”)

A stick of sage, cedar, sweet grass, or a mix of any or all of them, called a “smudge stick.”“Smudging” is the act of using the smoke from an herb to cleanse away negativity.

4 small quartz crystals

4 sticks of incense that you enjoy

How to Do It:

Choose a time when you are alone in your home.

Disable any devices that could interrupt you (phones, etc) and make sure pets are happy and secure andnot needy in the moment.

Open as many doors and windows as possible.

Place the black candle in a location where it can burn safely, as close to the “heart” of your home aspossible, and light it. Remember that black ABSORBS. Imagine that this candle is drawing in andburning off all negativity. Be sure to let it burn all the way down. If at some point, the candle goes outon its own (and you are sure it is free of drafts, etc), this tells you the candle has finished its job. It this

Page 35: Magical Ethics and Protection - Katrina Rasbold

case, it can be used again later for the same purpose if needed.

Light the smudge stick and blow it out so that it glows and smokes. Do not be surprised if there is aLOT of smoke in a home that needs some extra help.

While the black candle burns, begin to “smudge” at one corner of your home and systematically workyour way around the entirety of your home with the sage until you are back where you started. Wave thesmoking smudge stick around the walls of your home as though you are erasing any negativity thatclings to the walls. Give particular attention to corners (upper and lower) where energy gets trapped andto openings to the outside world such as doors, door jams, windows, ventilation areas, fans, etc. Takenote of any areas of your home that feel particularly uncomfortable and be sure to give them extraattention. As you do this, say aloud, “I cleanse this home of all that is not positive and pure. We cleansethis home of all negativity and ill will.” As you do so, visualize any negativity in your home driven out.You may have to relight the smudge stick from time to time. If it has been a while since your lastcleansing or if this is the first time, the smoke might get quite thick as it does its work.

When you return to your starting point, see how much of the smudge stick is left. If you want, you canmake another circuit or you can go back over the critical points again such as corners, ventilationopenings, and places that feel off. When you have done all you wish to do with the smudge stick, placeit in a bowl of dirt or sand or some other safe place and let it burn out. You can let it burn out eitherinside or outside. You may now close your windows and doors.

When you have finished this, place the white candle next to the black candle and light it. You may dothis even if the black candle has not completely finished burning down. Remember, that whiteREFLECTS and EMITS. Imagine that the white candle is filling your home with beautiful, clean whitelight. The white light drives out any remaining darkness. Let the candle burn as you did with the blackone (again, both of them burning at the same time is just fine). See it radiating blessings and protection.

While the white candle burns (and possibly still the black), you will now do some outside work. Buryone of each of the 4 quartz crystal pieces at each of the four corners of your house or apartmentbuilding. You do not have to bury them deeply or get a shovel or anything. Just press them into the dirtnear the corner of the building in which you live. If you have trouble, you can use a knife, even a butterknife, to make a hole and then push the dirt over each one. When you place the last crystal, the fourcrystals will connect with one another and form a barrier of protection around your home.

Next, sprinkle the graveyard dirt, dust from a brick, or salt around the outside perimeter of your home.Just little pinches at a time will do fine. Again, pay attention to entry points such as windows, vents, anddoors, all corners that collect energy, and any areas that cause you to feel uncomfortable. This will helpconnect the crystals and protect your home. After you have done these two things outside, do not besurprised if there are visitors who hesitate to enter your home or just stand outside to talk to you and donot enter at all. Anyone who has any malicious intent toward you or your family will be repelled. Theywill not be harmed; they will simply be uncomfortable coming into your home and will want to leavequickly or not want to enter at all. The system works against energy specifically and if people are theones carrying that energy, they will be caught up in the effect whether or not they deliberately caused theenergy.

When you have finished your outside work, wait for the black and white candles to finish burningdown. Once they have done so, light the blue or purple candle in the same place where you burned theblack and white ones. Imagine the candle blessing your home with peace, love, and protection. Bluebrings the energy of peace and tranquility. Purple brings the energies of “the highest and the best” ofeverything.

Page 36: Magical Ethics and Protection - Katrina Rasbold

While the blue or purple candle burns, light each of the 4 incense sticks and place them in a safeburning place in each of the furthest opposite four corners of your home. Imagine that the smoke ismeeting in the middle and permeating your home with blessings and protection.

When the blue candle finishes burning (either because it burns down or it goes out on its own), you aredone. Your home is cleansed and blessed.

I recommend cleansing your home with a smudge stick on a regular basis and particularly if the peoplein your home go through an increased or ongoing degree of tension. The Full Monty of the above 13steps is good to do if you go through a period of time where you feel that the energy in your home isout of balance for more than a week or so.

If the imbalance seems temporary, use the sage to clean the air the same way you would sweep a floor.Go into the corners and circle the room, allowing the smoke to move into the center as it drifts. Makesure that you extinguish the smudge stick completely. “Smudging” will also bring down the tension of abad mood in adults or in children. “Sweeping the air” with a smudge stick will help keep the energies inyour home stable and clean while burning the black candle absorbs any negativity or chaotic energy.Burning the blue or purple candle while also burning the incense empowers and blesses your home withthe energy you choose. The quartz and graveyard dirt/dust from a brick/salt protects your home fromunwanted energy.

Chapter 8 – The Devil InsideIt is very rare that we have encountered a situation that cannot be effectively managed with thetechniques described in the previous chapters. Do you remember the scary story from teen years thatended with the terrorized babysitter answering the phone to have the police detective tell her, “We havetraced the call and it is coming from inside the house!”

Unfortunately, the majority of psychic disturbances come from within rather than without. When peoplein your home feel particularly negative, fearful, angry, or anxious in some way, the cycle perpetuates andgrows to the point that cleaning it with sage and incense is like trying to sweep a dirt floor. Unless youtake care of the source of the discord, the discord is going to perpetuate.

Of course, as we learned in the ethics section of this book, the only thing we can really control for anylong term is ourselves, so unless we are the ones who are creating the disharmonious energy, we are atthe mercy of the other person first recognizing that there is a problem and secondarily, doing anythingabout it. The fact of the matter is that some people just love to be miserable and creating drama is thefuel that keeps their machine going. It then become up to us whether or not we wish to continue ourassociation with that particular person.

In our experience, it is much more common for bad vibes to come from inside then house than outsidethe house. Even some “poltergeist” activity has been rightly attributed to the emotions of a householdmember that are so intense that they take on physical form. That is an extreme case of emotions frominside a home creating problems. In its mildest and most common form, it breeds irritability andfrustration amongst the people who live in the house and a feeling of discomfort and unease amongthose who visit.

If you are in a position of living with a real sour puss who shows no signs of changing their ways, ouronly advice to you is to smudge and smudge and smudge some more, on a daily basis at a minimum. This will at least keep the negativity at a lower baseline than if nothing at all is done.

Chapter 9 – Recognizing True Psychic AttackWe will guarantee you that there are no statistics to back up our guess, but we would go out on a limband say that probably only 2-3% of presumed instances of psychic attack are actually true psychicattacks. The experience is relatively rare because most people who are powerful enough and focusedenough to launch a true psychic attack are also experienced and smart enough to be unwilling to incurthe karmic expense of doing such a thing.

There are, however, those who are sufficiently confident in their own skills or otherwise sufficientlynaïve and/or stupid that they will use their energy in an attempt to control, injure, or malign someoneelse. Some people feel that they are immune from karmic return or else are willing to sustain whatevercomes their way in favor of the reward of harming someone who has offended them. This is the onlytrue form of what is commonly referred to as “Black Magic” and it can be accomplished on any spiritualpath whatsoever. People who wish ill on others are not isolated to any particular religion or practice.

As with so many things in the world, what we would do and what people with lower intelligence andgreater arrogance would do are often two very different things. Because of this, occasionally, we mayencounter someone who sends baneful energy our way.

“Baneful magic” could also be passive rather than active in its attack. Simply having people in yourworld who harbor ill will toward you or have buried resentment and malicious thoughts can create aspecific energy that finds its way to you. This similar to the poltergeist activity that we mentionedbefore. The person who generated the emotions that create the physical form causing the poltergeistproblem did not consciously will the physical manifestation to occur. The physical manifestation was asymptom of the underlying problem of intense, unresolved emotions like ongoing intense anger, fear, unrequited love, intense depression, etc.

In this case, the person who has negative feelings toward the victim may not consciously send theenergy toward the victim, but instead, the energy of ill will is so extreme that it basically takes on a lifeof its own and goes to find the target. Sometimes, the person who has the negative feelings toward theother person may feel a sense of finality or release as the negativity leaves them, but for the most part, they usually has no sense that anything has occurred. we want to be clear that we are talking aboutintense, negative emotion directed toward one person over an extended period of time; not a brief flashof anger.

Referencing back to the first paragraph of this chapter, it is a far, far greater number of people whothink they are being psychically attacked than those who actually are being psychically attacked. Moreoften, it is a case of what Katrina’s mother used to call, “Seeing demons behind clothesbaskets,”meaning that people are given to seeing malice where there is none and blowing the smallest things upand out of proportion. It is often easier to imagine some external “Big Bad,” sent by someone, than tothink that it is our own demons, secrets, and issues coming home to roost.

Yet, that tiny sliver of possibility persists that it could be the real thing. How do we know? Severalsymptoms can indicate psychic attack BUT, we hasten to add, can also be attributed to other factors. Ineach of the following symptoms, when true psychic attack is underway, the onset will be sudden andsevere, seemingly out of the blue:

Severe fatigue and the inability to recover strength easily.

Intense fearfulness and paranoia that is not common to the personality.

Severe headaches

Page 43: Magical Ethics and Protection - Katrina Rasbold

Anxiety attacks/Panic attacks

Nightmares, particularly of being chased or someone/something trying to kill the victim.

One part of the body or the whole body being extremely and unreasonably cold.

Severe pain or tension in the solar plexus, stomach, or intestinal area.

Unexplainable depression that cannot be shaken off.

Feelings of suicide or self-harm untraceable to any genuine issue.

Shaking and trembling.

Extreme pessimism and a sense of hopelessness.

Loss of confidence in a normally self-assured person.

Abrupt onset of a “victim” mentality.

Unexpected severe health problems.

Basically, what you are looking for is an abrupt change in personality and often, the victim using wordsand phrases that are atypical to their usual form of expression. Often, it is someone around the victimwho first suspects psychic attack because to the victim, their own thought processes seem organic andmake perfect sense. It is not until someone else calls attention to their unusual behavior that they oftenrealize that there is a problem.

Chapter 10 - How to Manage A Psychic AttackIt is a natural response, once it has been determined that a psychic attack has occurred, to want to strikeback. Desires for retaliation and retribution are understandable, but remember that we are dealing withpersonal energy and if a person has genuinely been under psychic attack, their energy reserves areusually quite low. Retribution or even the standard “reflect and return” action can result in whatamounts to a magical pissing contest. If you saw the Disney movie The Sword and The Stone, you nodoubt remember the scene between Maab and Merlin where they engage in a magical duel, which hewins by turning himself into a germ and infecting her with a disease.

The attacker is likely either weakened from the sheer amount of energy that such an attack requires orelse is unaware that his/her negative energy grew legs and went on walkabout to seek out the target of itsown volition. The victim is weakened because they have been under attack. This leaves us with twopeople who are not in top form to deal with a difficult emotional and spiritual situation.

If the “attacker” does not realize that their emotions are harming another person and the “victim” shootsback, the inadvertent attacker may think the victim is the one initiating the attack. In short, it is almostinevitable that retaliation results in a magic pissing contest that neither party can afford. For that reason, the best defense is to ground the energy before it reaches you.

Even the best Bio-Universal energy practitioner can get sloppy when high emotions are at stake and soretaliation is discouraged. The most commonly recommended response to any kind of negative energyslinging is the famous “reflect and return,” which is the magical equivalent of “I am rubber; you areglue. What you send to me bounces off of me and sticks to you.” The victim is basically walled inmirrors of protection (through mental visualization) and any negative or baneful energy that is sent tothe victim is reflected right back to the sender. On one level, this makes perfect sense because theattacker then gets back only what they send.

The drawback is not only the suggestion given above about a passive attacker who does not realize theyare doing anything, but also the casualties of war that can occur. Magical energy, particularly that hurledin defense, even justified defense, can splatter and not hit only the attacker, but other innocent people inthe vicinity. Also, there is the concern that if you are dealing with an active, aggressive psychic attackerwith any degree of magical energy, they are going to realize that you have sent them a big ball of uglyand may adopt an, “Oh, it’s like THAT, is it?” mindset. For this reason, we do not recommend “reflectand return.”

Should the attack go unaddressed? Not at all. There are very specific steps to take in the case of psychicattack.

1) Banish all fear. Psychic attack, like all negativity, feeds on “negative” emotions such as anger andfear. Those feelings, regardless of how justified, only serve to make the initial attack stronger andamplify the symptoms. This only gives you a bigger demon to fight, so your approach should be veryneutral.

2) Call for back up. If you are the victim, do not attempt to combat this situation alone. You need notonly the additional energy of people you trust, but also their objectivity and grounding assistance. Letthem know truthfully what is going on, ask for their opinion, and then ask for their help to deal with it.

3) Take a ritual bath. Soak yourself in water, preferably with lavender oil or flowers, and try to clearyour head.

4) Smudge your home. Use the techniques described in Chapter 7 of this book to clean out and bless the

Page 47: Magical Ethics and Protection - Katrina Rasbold

inside of your house.

5) Receive and ground the energy. Once you have cleansed yourself and your home, light a BLACKcandle to absorb any negativity that is coming your way and visualize all of the baneful, hurtful energygoing directly into the candle and being grounded down to Mother Earth. Normally, we are majoradvocates for empowering the practitioner to take care of themselves. In this particular instance, wehighly recommend the act of surrender, not to the attacker, but to Deity. Give it all over to God/Goddessand let the Divine sort it out. Just like with any other kind of bully, what they want is attention. Whenthey realize they are not garnering the results they want, they will lose interest and drift away. This is,truly, the most hurtful thing you can do to the attacker.

This way, the energy is safely grounded and will harmlessly dissipate. It will no longer affect you and itwill not risk escalating the situation or harming an innocent bystander. You will also have the strength ofknowing that you are the bigger, stronger person because you have not allowed your emotions togovern your behavior. Sure, it is more fun to think of getting into a high-powered magic flingingcontest, but in the end and in practical application, grounding the energy is the best possible solution.

I have often had people ask us about the idea of taking the negative energy and transmuting it intopositive energy. We do not recommend this because it is an enormous task energy-wise and there is noassurance that you will achieve full conversion, which means you could be sending contaminatedenergy out into the world. We can absolutely assure you that grounding this particular type of energy isthe way to go.

Page 48: Magical Ethics and Protection - Katrina Rasbold

Chapter 11 – In ConclusionThe chances are extremely rare that you will ever actually encounter a true psychic attack; however, there are negative, baneful energies all around us and knowing how to manage them is an important partof being an aware and responsible magical person. The techniques described in this book of how tocleanse, bless, and protect your home and yourself, as well as how to ground negative energies as theycome to you, will be sufficient to combat very nearly any magical snafu you encounter.

More than anything, however, if you find you are in what people call a “downward spiral,” do notimmediately look to external influences to find the cause. First, look within because it is there that youwill most likely find the answers.

The most common reason why a person, especially a magical person, enters a period of time whereeverything seems to go wrong is that they have veered off the path to their own greatest good. TheUniverse tries to nudge us back onto the correct path again and when the nudges are no longer effective, they sometimes turn into outright blows.

Ask yourself, “When was the last time that everything felt right?”

If you still your mind, take a few breaths, and relax, often your visualization of the “last time thateverything felt right,” you will be able to trace your steps backward and see where your life went off therails. Usually, armed with that knowledge, you can begin to take reconstructive action to get back ontrack again. It doesn’t usually happen immediately, but the longest journey begins with the first steps.

More often than not, the demons are within, not without.

Blessed Be.
