FlowBasedTechnologySummarizeddataisgeneratedbythenetworkdevices,includingcharacteristicsoftheIPconversationbetweentwonetworknodes,andthesecharacteristicsareembeddedwithinflows.FlowdataisexportedfromthenetworkdevicestotheNPMDtechnologies,whichthencollectandprocessthisdatastreamtoprovideinsightintowhichdevicesandapplicationsareconsumingbandwidth,howlongtheconversationsarelasting,andwhoisparticipatinginthem.Sincethedataissummarized,adegreeofdetailisremovedtosimplifyprocessingandextractmeaningfromtheactualnetworkdata.Flowbaseddatadoesnotprovidedetailsdowntoaspecificsetofnetworkpacketsgoingbetweenthesourceanddestination,andcanhaveaperformanceimpactonthedevicesexportingflowdata.
Thereareseveralflowcollectionstandards,suchasCisco'sNetFlow(v.5/v.9),Juniper'sJFlow,Huawei'sNetStream,Citrix'sAppFlow,Riverbed'sCascadeFlow,theInternetEngineeringTaskForce's(IETF's)IPFIX(whichisbasedoffNetFlowv.9)andsFlowfromthesFlow.orgconsortium.Vendorderivedstandardsarepredominant,whichhindersintegrationandcomparisons.Flowdatacollectionisafunctionembeddedinthenetworkdevicesthemselves.Thedeviceanalyzesthenetworktraffictraversingfromoneinterfacetoanother,withtheprimarypurposeofassessingbandwidthconsumption,andthelevelofdatabeingsentandreceivedbetweenvarioussourceanddestinationportsacrossthenetwork.Thatdataisthensummarizedintoastreamofflowrecordthatissenttothemonitoringtoolsthatcollectandassesstheflowrecords.

Themodernpacketanalysistechnologieswerepioneeredmorethan20yearsagowithNetworkGeneral'spacketSnifferin1986.Snifferwasdesignedtohelptroubleshootnetworkissuesaftertheyoccurred.Thistechnologywasacquiredseveraltimes,andnowfindsitshomewithNetScoutasof2007.Throughtheyears,thesehighendproprietarypacketanalysistechnologieshavecommoditizedandmovedintoopensourcewithentrantssuchasWireshark,tcpdumpandlibpcapprovidingtheunderpinningsofthistechnique.Theseparticularopensourcetechnologieshave,inturn,beenincorporatedintocountlessnumbersofothercriticalopensourceprojects,suchasSnort(intrusiondetectionsystem),Nmap(portscanning)andngrep.Thesetechnologiescontinuetoevolve,mostrecentlyintoenablingrealtimevisibilityand,inmanycases,supportingthearchivingofpacketdataforforensicsanddebuggingwithoutrequiringtheissuetobereproducedfordiagnosis.
