SEVENTEENTH ANNUAL REPORT

OJ' THE

TORONTO MAGDALENE ASYLUM, OR

FEMALE HOUSE OF REFUGE.

THE Managers of the Magdalene Asylum respectfully present to their friends and the public their regular Annual Report.

Before entering upon the work of the past yeaI', we would lift our hearts in grateful praise to Him who hath guided our faltering steps, strengthened onr weak faith, and blessed ouI' feeble e/forts to reclaim, from haunts of vice and infamy, many of the fallen and degraded of our sex. Some of these poor wanderers, in penitent tears, have declared their abhorrence of their past course, and expres~ed an earnest desire to be kept in future from the paths of sin and temptation. Others, after a few months of quiet alld industry, have deserted the Refuge, alas ~

only to wallow in the mire. Even of some of these we are not altogether destitute of hope. It may be that in some lone hour the poor forsaken one may, in thought, return til the Home, and to the teachings from the blessed W"rd-may remember there is mercy for every poor penitent ; and that there may be mercy for her, for" Christ still receiveth sinners, and eateth with them."

During the past year, 20 of the inmates were sent to service; 3 were dismissed; 10 insisted on going out, one of whom returned to her mother; 20 ran off, 7 of whom returned; and one died in the HOilpita!. The number now in the Asylum is 38. -:\Iost of those who remained in service have done well, giving great satisfaction to their employers.

The amount received for work done during the past year is $]007. Steps are abont to be taken towards the erection of a new building,

the want of which has been long felt. We trust that our friends in Toronto will give us every possible aid. There are already in the hands of the Treasurer $4000 for this purpose.

We rejOICe to take this opportunity of acknowledging the inesti· mabIe services of Mes. Aiken, the Matron, whose treatment of the inmates is characterized by extreme tenderness and kindness, combined with great firmness. Under her prudent and judicious management, assisted by her excelleuL co-worker, Miss Drennan, we are relieved feom much trouble and anxiety.

The past year has deprived us of the very ,,<tluable services of Mrs. EwarL, so long Secretaey. ,Ve iudulge the hope that on hl':r return she may be induced to resume an office, the duties of which she perfoemed so ably and so well.

'Ve offer our gratefnl thanks to those friends, who, year after yeal', contribute so liberally, so generously, and, above all, so cheerfully, both ia mouey and in goods for the support of the institution.

To Dr. Robiuson we continue to be indebted for the same unremitting kindness and attention to the sick.

To those Christian gentlemen who conduct the weekly and Sabbath services, thanks cannot fully convey our appreciation of their labors.

The Committee gratefully acknowledge the kindness of the Rev. S. Givins, who providcd a melodeon for the Institution. One of the inmates is able to use it; and it forms a means of pleasing recreation as well as usefulness.

Although ouly one death has occurred during the past year, (and this in the hospital,) yet a few months since one departed, who, a few years ago, sought and found shelter in the Asylum; and, from instructions there received, Kate Parker first learned and believed herself a lost sinner -an impression which neyer left her till mercy she sought and found. At the expiration of her twelve months a kind member of the Committee engaged her as a servant; and for several years she faithfully discharged the duties which devolved upon her; after which she lived alone, sup' porting herself by 'nlshing : leading a consistent Christian life: always rejoicing in the love of God. When stricken by the hand of death, the same loving confiding trnst in her Saviour was manifested. To her Pastor, and the kind friends who visited her, she expressed, even to her dying moments, that peace, and only peace, and joy filled her soul. Thus passed away the once poor, miserable outcast, to join that glorious throng whose only theme is Jesus.

AGNES McGEE, Secretary.
