I took a sample of my target audience to look at some potential magazine templates. I asked them for feedback in reflection to the codes and conventions that I had used.

Page 3: Magazine templates

Negative: The masthead looks very cheap and old fashion. It does not relate to a contemporary audience.

Negative: The page seems empty and does not suit a magazine front cover. It does not illustrate what content features in the magazine

Negative: The Facebook sign should feature at the bottom right hand side of the page to make it more subtle.

Positive: The tagline underneath the mast head clearly tells the audience that this is a horror magazine.

Positive: The main image conventional in terms of a horror film and will attract that specific audience.

The pale green colour screen conveys sickly connotations that fits in with a horror genre. This will allow the audience to relate to this magazine.

Negative: The barcode attracts too much attention away from the masthead.

Negative: The feature stories are not symmetrically organised making the page look messy.

Negative: The masthead should not have a black board behind it. It does not look professional

Positive: The main image clearly illustrates that this is a horror magazine, therefore allowing the audience to relate to it.

Positive: The film role at the bottom of the page allows the audience to get an idea of what stories will be featuring in the magazine. Also the film role fits in nicely weiththe concept of a film magazine.

The redish colour scheme tells the audience that blood and gor will feature in this magazine, therefore reinforcing the fact that this is a horror film.

Negative: The red

colour scheme drowns out the other attractions of the page.

Negative: the

feature stories are not very visible, due to little contrast with the main image.

Negative: the

additional incentive at the top left of the page should feature at the bottom of the page.

Positive: the red colour

scheme fits in with the horror genre and will attract that type of audience.

Positive: The main

image is very conventional in reflection to a horror magazine. Consumers will easily be able to identify themselves with this magazine.

Positive: The film role

that runs down the right hand of the page is a good conventional way to present the feature stories in way that a film lover can relate to.

After gathering this feedback, it is clearer to me what codes and conventions work best to appeal to my target audience. For example it is clear that my audience would like a lot of illustration as to what content will be featuring in the magazine. This means that the front page should be full in terms of captions and visual images. This is qualitative data that will help me to construct my horror magazine.
