The city of Sturgis was founded in August 1876 and is oftenreferred to as the Key City of the Black Hills. Col. SamuelD. Sturgis, commander of the post at Fort Meade named
Sturgis – not after himself but in honor of his son, Lt. James G.Sturgis, who had been killed at the Battle of the Little Bighorn in1876.
In 1878, the U.S. Cavalry established a post in South Dakotanamed Fort Meade. Adjacent to that post, a small community ofvendors set up near the fort. This community existed for thepurpose of relieving the soldiers of some, or all, of their militarypay by any means possible. This practice was termed "scooping"money from the troops and the settlement was called Scooptown.
Because of its geographical position and importance as atrading center, Scooptown became a community worthy ofestablishment as a town. During the great western expansion,Fort Meade, on the eastern edge of Sturgis, served as a UnitedStates Cavalry post to nearly every cavalry regiment in the U.S.Army. Soldiers trained at Fort Meade, served in the Spanish-American War, the Pancho Villa Incursion and World Wars I andII. The Star Spangled Banner became part of the evening militaryretreat ceremony at Fort Meade in 1892, long before it becameour National Anthem.
While there is some evidence of fur traders, explorers &military expeditions, visiting the area that now makes up MeadeCounty, it wasn’t until the discovery of gold in the Black Hillsthat any large number of white men visited the area. The threefamous historic highways to the Hills, in the Gold Rush Days, converged at a stage station near Bear Butte. These roads camefrom Sidney, NE; Fort Pierre, SD; & Bismarck, ND.
Sturgis is a trade center for an agricultural region producingcattle, sheep, hay, and wheat. Health care, particularly at theveterans’ medical center, is important to the economy.Manufacturers include firearms, ammunition, motorcycleproduction and accessories, and metals-related custommanufacturing. The city is known for the annual Sturgis®
Motorcycle RallyTM held in August of each year, first held in 1938,an event that draws thousands of motorcycle fans to the city forraces, cycle shows, and concerts.
Since its inception, Sturgis has continued to flourish as acenter of commerce and remains a vital Black Hills community.

Fort MeadeBY PAUL HIGBEE
As home of the world’s biggest andmost famous motorcycle rally, Sturgisis sometimes called “the city of
riders.” The nickname holds doublemeaning because long ago, as home to FortMeade, Sturgis was a base for U.S. ArmyCavalry troops.
The fort, a mile east of town onHighway 34, was established in 1878, justtwo years after George Custer’s defeat atLittle Big Horn. Custer and all his mendied in that Montana battle but a Cavalryhorse, Comanche, survived. Comanche wasretired to Fort Meade and treated withgreat reverence. While the fort is bestremembered for that era of frontier militarymissions, it survived to play other roles wellinto the 20th century. Its history ispreserved at an excellent on-site museum, developed in a 1905 building that formerlyserved as the commander’s headquarters.
A stroll across Fort Meade’s wideparade ground, with landmark Bear Buttelooming against the horizon, can be theperfect remedy for a busy day. The paradeground is key to a little-known bit of SouthDakota trivia regarding the nationalanthem. In 1892 the fort’s commanderdecided “The Star Spangled Banner”should be played by the Fort Meade band
at every evening retreat, parade andconcert. Secretary of War Daniel Lamontapplauded the idea and ordered the songplayed for evening retreat at all Armyposts. After four decades “The StarSpangled Banner” held a place in everyArmy veteran’s heart, and Congressdeclared it the national anthem in 1931.
By then Fort Meade had preparedtroops and horses for the Spanish-American War and for action along theMexican border against Pancho Villa. Thefort served mainly as a recruiting stationduring World War I. In the 1930s it wasthe South Dakota headquarters for theCivilian Conservation Corps.
During World War II soldiers whowould fight at Normandy and otherEuropean battlefields trained at FortMeade. With a locationfar removed from thefront lines, Fort Meadewas perfect also as aGerman prisoner of
war camp, and as the station for a strangecompany of American soldiers who theArmy feared might aid the enemy orcommit sabotage. Toward the end of WorldWar II Fort Meade ceased operations as anactive military post. It soon had a newmission that it retains today as a VeteransAdministration medical center. It’s also abase for South Dakota National Guardactivities.
The Old Fort Meade Museum is opendaily May-September, 9 a.m, – 5 p.m., andfeatures special historical programmingthroughout the summer. For moreinformation visit www.fortmeademuseum.orgor (605) 347-9822.
HISTORY

Black Hills National Cemetery islocated in the shadow of the BlackHills in South Dakota. This region is
the homeland of Lakota Indians whotraversed the Great Plains before thearrival of Europeans in the mid-18thcentury. French explorers first arrived inthe early 1740s and Spain acquiredsovereignty over the
region in 1762. The 1803 LouisianaPurchase gave the United States title to theregion. The greatest rush of Europeanimmigration came in 1874 when gold wasdiscovered in the Black Hills. Legally, theBlack Hills had been closed to whitesettlement under the Treaty of FortLaramie. The military, however, was unable
to halt the advancing settlers. The 1876 Battle of Little
Bighorn was decisive for theregion’s future. The AmericanIndians were forced to accept areduction in their reservation area.
In 1947, Congressman FrancisCase endorsed the concept of aregional national cemetery. With
the support of various South Dakotaveterans’ organizations, a site just outside ofSturgis, on the Fort Meade MilitaryReservation, was selected, and in 1948,Fort Meade National Cemetery wasdedicated.
The name of the cemetery was changedfrom Fort Meade National Cemetery toBlack Hills National Cemetery in 1949 toavoid confusion with the existing activemilitary installation in Maryland and inrecognition of the area’s historicalsignificance.

Treasure – just the word conjures alltypes of exciting images, but almostalways thoughts of gold!
There’s gold in them hills - and you canfind it! Stories of gold in the Black Hillsstart as early as the Ezra Kind party in1834. A brief mention in a military reportfollowing Custer’s Expedition in 1874resulted in the Black Hills Gold Rush of1876-77. And, of course, the most recentfind of the largest nugget (Icebox Nugget)ever found in the Black Hills by “DiggerChuck” Ward & Bryan Janis in July 2010continues to fuel the hopes of striking itrich.
Your opportunity to mine gold, bypanning or sluicing, is permitted in most ofthe Black Hills National Forest; howeveryou should stop at the ranger’s office inSpearfish for specific information on theseareas. You’ll find other prospectors outtrying their luck in hopes of their own giantnugget. You can find gold pans for as littleas $4 – so try your luck in one of ourbeautiful Black Hills’ streams. Of courseanother option is to take lessons at CusterState Park, Black Hills Mining Museum or
one of several tourist mines in the area. Not quite as exciting as finding a gold
nugget, but a sure-fire way to find“treasure” is geocaching. With more than400 “treasures” located within 20 miles ofSturgis geocaching is a fantastic way toexplore the area. All you really need to playthis hide & seek game is a GPS enableddevice (many cell phones are now GPSenabled).
Most treasures are hidden in waterproofcontainers and generally will include apencil, small notebook (so each personwho finds the treasure can log their nameand date of find) along with smalltreasures. Some sites are replenished bythe person who started the cache, whileothers request the finder replaces the“treasure” (small keychain, toy, button, etc.) taken with a token of their own.
There are many levels of cache sitesin the area, so whether you’re anewbie or an old pro there’s anadventure waiting for you. Websitesabout geocaching are plentiful; one
we have found that’s informative for thosenew to geocaching and has plenty of cacheslocated in the Black Hills iswww.geocaching.com.

WINTER RECREATION
Many people have neverexperienced fishing except duringthe summer. Avid anglers know
about a whole other world of fishingwaiting for them once the temperaturedrops. Ice fishing is a fantastic wintersport and an excellent family activity. It’scheap, it’s easy, and it’s fun to do andthese ice fishing tips will make it evenmore fun. Popular ice fishing locationsnear Sturgis include Pactola Reservoir,French Creek, Spearfish Creek, SpringCreek, and Bear Butte Lake.
Always make sure the ice is thickenough before walking or driving on it: atleast 6 inches for walking and 10 inchesfor driving. Areas that are dark are notthick enough. Never drive fast on ice evenwhen it is thick. Ice moves, and drivingfast can cause air bubbles, which canbreak the ice.
One of the most important things to dowhen ice fishing in South Dakota is todress warm. Even if you have an ice
shelter, the winds will chill you tothe bone. Use layers of clothingand a windproof coat. You canalways remove layers if you get toowarm. Staying dry is veryimportant.
Ice fishing has become verypopular in western South Dakota. The amazing scenery, abundantwildlife and fantastic fishing havefishermen flocking to western SouthDakota during the winter months. While some fish prefer specific waterdepths, trout can be found just belowthe ice, at the bottom of the lake oranywhere in between.
Small jigs, ice flies and jiggingspoons tipped with wax/meal worms arecommonly used baits while ice fishing inthe Black Hills. Night crawlers are alsopopular, but keep in mind that trout aremore prone to swallowing night crawlerswhole, making them difficult to release.Good luck!
Ice Fishing

If you ask people if they’ve ever heard ofSturgis, they’re likely to say somethingalong the lines of, “Isn’t that the place
where all the motorcycles are?” or, if they’rea motorcycle enthusiast something morelike, “I’ve wanted to go to the Rally foryears,” or even more likely, “Of course …I’ve been there 10 times for the Rally.” TheSturgis® Motorcycle RallyTM is one of thebiggest motorcycle events in the UnitedStates, drawing hundreds of thousands ofmotorcycles and riders to this small town inthe Black Hills every year. The history ofthis great rally and the history ofmotorcycling is told every day on MainStreet in Sturgis at the Sturgis MotorcycleMuseum & Hall of Fame.
Walk through the doors of the museum, pay your admission, and you’ll betransported through history. You’ll walkamong a vast array of excellent examples ofhistoric motorcycles dating back to 1909.From early board-track racers to moremodern customs, there’s something here foreveryone. American-made motorcyclesshare space with two-wheelers from all overthe world. But the history shared at thismuseum goes far beyond the machines –this museum also houses considerablememorabilia and Sturgis-specific historicalinformation. Exhibits are rotated on a regularbasis, offering repeat visitors somethingfresh and new every time they stop in.
The Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hallof Fame also shares – and honors – thegreat history of motorcycling through itsHall of Fame and its Freedom Fighters Hallof Fame. Each year a new class of honorees is welcomed into both Halls of Fame. The
Sturgis Motorcycle Hall of Fame honors themen and women who have made significantcontributions to the sport and the lifestyle, while the Freedom Fighters Hall of Famerecognizes the sacrifices individuals acrossthe nation, and world, have made to protectthe rights of those who ride.
