I SINGLES
THE O'JAYS:
"Emotionally Yours"
(Sire/Reprise PRO-A-4713)
With their last album. Serious,
The O'Jays moved away from
Philadelphia International andabandoned a Philly-type sound in
favor of a more high-tech "urban
contemporary" approach, andtheir current album Emotionally
Yours continues in that vein. Emo-
tionally Yours' title track is a roman-
tic mid-tempo number fusing
gospel-influenced soul singing
with high-tech touches. Both the
"R&B Mix" and the "Gospel Mix"
show The O'Jays' gospel roots, al-
though the latter is somewhat more
so.
I ALBUMSANDREW DICE CLAY:
Dice Rules (Def American
26555-4)
It's hard to imagine 20,000
people gathered in New York's
Madison SquareGarden reciting X-
rated nursey rhymes. But that's ex-
actly what happens on Dice Rules,
which was recorded live at the Gar-
den in 1990 and at a New Jersey
comedy club that same year. Those
who dislike Andrew Dice Clay's
raunchy humor are unlikely to be
converted by Dice Rules—TheDiceman is as crude, obnonxious
and irreverent as ever. But whether
or not Dice is one's cup of tea, Joan
Rivers hit the nail on the head whenshe asserted that anyone who takes
his routine seriously is off base. TheDiceman is a character, pure andsimple. Ironically, the real AndrewSilverstein would probably bemore likely to open a door for anold lady than most of the self-
righteous individuals attacking
him. Most of Dice Rules wasproduced by Def American leader
Rick Rubin, who has also workedwith Run-D.M.C., The Geto Boys,
Slayer, Danzig, The Beastie Boys
and LL Cool J. But Dice himself
produced "Brooklyn Bad Boy," his
tongue-in-cheek attempt to sing
rock & roll.
DIANE SCHUUR: Pure
Schuur (GRP GRD-9628)
Like Nancy Wilson, DianeSchuur can sing jazz, pop and R&Bequally well— which shedemonstrates on her latest CD,Pure Schuur. "Deed I Do," a duet
with veteran jazz singer Joe Wil-
liams, is hard-swinging jazz. But
Schuur goes for a classic pop soundon Nat King Cole's"Unforgettable" and takes a morecontemporary pop approach on
'Touch" and "I Could Get Used To
This." And Schuur shows her R&Bside on "Baby, You Got What it
Takes," a duet with legendary soul
singer Bobby Womack. Pure
Schuur, an 11-song CD, wasproduced by Andre Fischer, with
GRP leaders Dave Grusin & Larry
Rosen serving as executiveproducers.
TEMPLE OF THE DOG:Temple Of The Dog (A&M75021-5350-2)
Seattle's definitely in the house.
Temple Of The Dog is a special
project consisting of Soundgarden
members Chris Cornell (har-
monica, banjo) and Matt Cameron(drums, percussion). Mother Love
Bone graduates Jeff Ament and
Stone Gossard (rhythm guitar,
acoustic guitar) and ex-Green
River axeman Mike McCready(lead guitar)—all of whom have
been down with Seattle's rock
scene. Much of the music on Temple
Of The Dog, a 10-track CD, is '70s-
influenced, guitar-crunching hard
rock that, at times, shows some LedZeppelin influence. The liner notes
point out that "Say Hello To
Heaven"and "Reach Down" were
inspired by Mother Love Bone's
lead singer Andy Wood, who suf-
fered a drug-related death last year.
And Woods' death probably in-
spired the eerie "Times OfTrouble," which is about heroin
abuse. The CD's other highlights
include "Pushin' Forward Back,"
"Hunger Track," "Wooden Jesus"
and the psychedelic-influenced
'Tour Walled World." Temple Of
The Dog produced the album with
Rick Parashar.
B ANGIE B: B Angie B(Bust It CDP- 95236-2)
R&B singer B Angie B's self-
titled debut album, the latest
release on MC Hammer's Bust It
label, is a strongly hip-hop-in-
fluenced R&B effort with a strong
potential for exposure on "urban"
radio. Angie (whose been featured
in Hammer's 'Tray" video) covers
two 1970s soul classics: TheEmotions' 1976 hit "I Don't Wanna
Lose Your Love" and Rufus &Chaka Khan's "Sweet Thing," but
puts her songwriting skills to workon the high-tech funk workouts
'Tump It Up" and 'This Is A JamFor You" (which contains a sample
of Parliament's "Flashlight") and
the mid-tempo "I'm So Sorry."
Hammer contributes his funk song
"Men Get Lonely," and the soulful
ballad "So Much Love" was written
by ex-Con Funk Shun member Fel-
ton Pilate. Producers on B Angie B
include James Earley, Hammer and
Pilate, with Hammer and Louis K.
Burrell serving as executive
producers.
NUSRAT FATEH ALI
KHAN: Mustt Mustt
(Realworld/Virgin 91630-2)
Virgin's world-oriented Real-
world label, which has released
everything from Latin to Chinese to
Mid-Eastern music, has another
winner in Nasrat Fateh Ali Khan's
Mustt Mustt—the singer/songwriter's follow-up to Shaneh-
Shah. As a member of the Islamic
Sufi sect—which, like Hindus, em-
phasizes meditation and chant-
ing—Khan embraces Quawwalimusic. The 11 tracks on this CD are
hypnotic and passionate songs of
praise, underscoring the impor-
tance of music to Sufi culture. While
Quawwali music goes back cen-
turies, the use of synthesizers adds
a modem edge to Mustt Mustt—an
effort that is at once traditional and
contemporary.
TRIBE AFTER TRIBE:
Tribe After Tribe
(Megaforce/Atlantic 7
82235-2)
Tribe After Tribe's self-titled CDmarks a definite departure for
Megaforce, a label known for such
metal bands as Testament, Overkill
and Vio-Lence. Tribe After Tribe, a
white South African outfit, has a
rather U2-ish quality—melodic,
often reflective, yet possessing a
certain intensity. While the lyrics
don't beat you over the head with
politics a la Linton Kwesi Johnson,
The Sex Pistols, Public Enemy or
Exodus, songs like "White Boys In
The Jungle" and "Poor Africa"
make it clear that Tribe After Tribe
opposes apartheid and colonialism.
Touches of African and Mid-East-
ern music can be heard on somesongs, but Tribe After Tribe is a rock
band first and foremost.
SUCCESS-N-EFFECT:Back In Effect
(Umoja/WRAP/Ichiban ICH1108)
Though Success-N-Effect drops
its share of boasting and "party
jams" on its second album, Back In
Effect, the hardcore Atlanta rap
posse is at its best when delivering
hard-hitting social and political
commentary with a definite Black
nationalist perspective. Among the
CD's message songs are
"Blueprint," which samples ChuckBrown & The Soul Searchers'
"Bustin' Loose"; and "Angel Dust,"
an update of the Gil Scott-Heron
classic decrying the destruction
caused by drugs. Clubs should
check out "Jump 2 It (House From
The South)," an enjoyable hip-
house song based on the Aretha
Franklin hit.

whites used to want to come to the

the black dubs they'd find some reason
to close them down. Of course, it
would be trumped up, but they wouldget it dosed if they wanted it dosed.
"Originally, when my career wasjust getting off the ground around the
New Orleans area, I played a lot of
fraternity parties and sorority dances
locally. And when I travelled up and
down the Southern region here
—
Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi—
I
played a lot of fraternity parties on
various college campuses, when they
used to have Rush Week and stuff like
that.
"But I also played a lot of local white
clubs. Before I left here I got into what
they call the 'white market,' I kind of
crossed over before that word wasused, 'crossover.' My records
—'It's
Raining' and those—were pretty
popular here on the local radio sta-
tions, and so I got called to some of the
white clubs. So I developed a following
early in my career that a lot of the other
black entertainers had not gotten over
into at that time."
New Orleans is a city with a long
memory: if they ever liked you there,
they still like you there. Although the
bookings dried up in the '60s (she
blames a combination of the British In-
vasion and Hurricane Camille), her
audience was waiting with open arms
when she returned in the '70s.
"I'm a very personable person, I like
people," she says. "I used to teach myfans all the latest dances: Wheneversomething new would come out,
they'd say, 'Irma, what7s the latest dan-
ces? Teach us this.' And I would showthem how to dance.
"So we developed more than a fan-
artist relationship, we developed a
friendship as such. So even now, whenpeople talk about Irma Thomas, it's not
like Irma Thomas, the Star, it's like
Irma Thomas, My Next Door Neigh-
bor. Which is good— I enjoy that
relationship with people. And it gives
me an edge that a lot of entertainers
wish they had."
An edge, indeed. When Aretha
Franklin was on Donahue a fewmonths ago, the first audience memberwith a question was a woman from
New Orleans who flatly asked the
"Queen of Soul" what she thought of
Irma Thomas. Aretha said she didn't
recognize the name, but that she loved
Creole food.
"She had the nerve to ask Aretha
Franklin if she knew me," laughs Irma.
"I have met Aretha Franklin a couple
of times in my day, but, of course, these
stars forget. I'm sure she's listened to
my records, but I'm not going to bother
to call her on it. If she chooses not to
know me, then fine, I have no problems
with that."

first in three years with new material. (Photo by Luis Tapia.)
THIS WAS NOT FOR PUBLIC DISCUSSION UNTIL MAY 1. BUT anyoneworth his executive perks already knows that Wilfrido Vargas has been signed,
sealed and delivered to the Venezuelan conglomerate Sono Rodven, commenc-ing officially on that date. Well, technically it's his Palma Pro label in a
distribution deal through Rodolfo Rodriguez's vast multimedia empire,
which includes the Caracas-based Venevision network and its U.S. label
TH/Rodven. But we're getting ahead of ourselves.
El Barbarazo Vargas is unquestionably the most positively successful meren-guero of the post-Johnny Ventura era. His five year deal with Sonografica,
Rodven's main multimedia rival in Venezuela, paved the way for many meren-gue stars—including El Caballo Ventura—to depart their national or regional
labels for more potentially remunerative contracts with the multis. Whetheranyone agrees or not, this deal helped Vargas grow immensely, as not only his
Las Chicas del Can consolidated a solid reputation with high-selling hits like
"Juana La Cubana" but also gave him the opportunity to develop an otherwise
unknown entity. The Altamira Banda Show.More importantly, it taught the Wilfrido Vargas Corporation the value of a
worldly vision, making its bands the most traveled in the business. Eventually
the recording deal was upgraded, whereas Sonografica distributed WVC'slabel, Palmapro, on a worldwide basis. However, if 'Grafica decided not to
release a production in a certain territory within a year of the delivery, the
releasing option reverted to Palmapro—all for advances, production costs andan unheard of 22 points per production.
Hence, when it became a solid rumor last June that Vargas was planning to
take his bands somewhere else, multis' offers appeared like mermaids in the
Caribbean, each singing a song of seduction, humming promises of interna-
tional exposure commensurate to the WVC bands' worldwide travails, andcrossover projects with non-Dominican and non-Hispanic colleagues. One, andnot necessarily the best, was a three-year package in the $750 thou barrio,
counterweighed with a worldwide distribution guarantee of $1.16 per unit.
So why Sono Rodven? Why now in lieu of all the possibilities for Anglocrossover? And why a company whose merengue track record in the U.S. andPuerto Rico is just a tad thinner than smoke? One of the answers could beRodolfito Rodriguez who indefatigably romanced the W. Vargas Corp. hierar-
chy—which includes brother Juan Vargas and pseudo-hermano and managerMilton Adames—with promises that 'Grafica couldn't match. They includedthe possible participation of Wilfrido as a novela actor to go along with the useof his music as a theme, and Rodven's tremendous penetration in Spain withits telenovelas and tropical productions. The icing was Venevision's promise of
television collaboration in Dominicana, and Wilfrido's deal for a daily 90-
minute show, plus another on Saturday evening, on Rahintel TV, and we haveyour basic Godfather- type, can't-refuse type of a deal.
(For the record, some members of the Vargas organization would havefavored signing with Sonotone, 'Grafica's U.S. label, which made a verycompetitive offer and with whom they had a good working relationship.
However, Los Vargas wanted to limit Sonotone's involvement strictly to the
U.S./P.R. market so that Palmapro's international affairs could be handled byanother entity. Obviously, Sonografica higher-ups nixed this secessional no-tion.)
The other speculation is older, more obvious and more logical: Money. Dinero.
Pesos. Lira. Cuartos. $$$$ in any language. IfWVC turned down 3/4 of a million, then Wilfrido's Si! could have cost the Rodriguez family a total of one milliondollars—including the signing bonus, of course—averaged out to a cool
$111,111 per year for Los Beduinos, Las Chicas and Altamira. As of this writing, the total package is worth over $15 million Dominican pesos, more than thecountry's 1989 GNP. If, as predicted, the dollar conversion rate hits over 20pesos per by the 1992 Quintcentennial, the Vargas Brothers would have madean extra five million cocos just for being in the right place at the right time.

VARIOUS ARTISTS
There are two Big Por Qu6s? The first is hardly new for anyone who reads the
Dominican daily El Nacional, perhaps the most expensive international
newspaper sold in the United States when compared to its national cost. WVChas been granted three radio signals by the government, and, to this effect, has
rented offices in Rahintel Radio. In spite of his international reputation Wilfrido
Vargas would be the first to admit that a merenguero is nothing unless he
continues conquering the D.R.
On the other hand, the cost of radio payola, an unpunished crime in
Dominicana, has become prohibitive. Hence, El Barbarazo seems to have opted
for having a radio network, a la Karen Records' Bienvenido Rodriguez's, that
could guarantee the broadcast of his groups' productions rather than crossover
promises with Luis Miguel, Emmanuel, Glorita, or Madonnita. An educated
guess has Wilfrido putting on the extra hat of doting corporate father, keeping
his trumpet in motion and working his tail out throughout the Rodven deal just
to earn the money to get the radio network going during its infancy.
The second is that $1 million is a fair price for a masterful Rodven public
relations coup, one that will go a long way in helping regain the ground lost
during the past year in areas like New York and Puerto Rico—not long ago
TH/R's exclusive domain—and in a genre, merengue, where they have never
enjoyed any success; a sharp contrast with its Mexican operation, which com-
petes successfully with bigger and better known labels. A big piece of the puzzle
rests on newly-named TH/ Rodven's general manager Jose Martinez who,
according to The Good Rumor Man, has grown corns on his buttocks with his
frequent-flyer itineraries.
My Pollyanna says this relationship has the potential to make history through
the Spanish-speaking record world, if both parties adhere to their initial
promises and expectations. And perhaps with Wilfrido not having to carry the
burden of an onerous traveling schedule and the duty to produce all family
bands, including non-Palmapro's, allowing others-like new acquisition musi-
cal producer, bandleader and singer-composer Manuel Jimenez—to bring
newer and fresher ideas to Los Beduinos, Las Chicas and Altamira, while
Wilfrido reserves the right of final approval. Then, some artistic and marketing
canons will be redefined.
Otherwise, the Rodriguez's money and Los Vargas' collective charm won't be
enough to buy an ounce of tolerance for three full years.

RAP/DANCETAKING A CUE FROM MOTOWN’S youthful hitmakers, The Boys and ABC(Another Bad Creation), and Hollywood Records' hot new group. The Party,
Mercury Records is unleashing Small Change, a co-ed quartet that should
Small Change
appeal to a slightly older crowd than the aforementioned cherubs. A hip andcleancut group of teens. Small Change sing of typical teen concerns (namely love
and parties) without ever getting too risque. The group should do well on both
pop and urban charts.
Speaking of Mercury, its new artist Crystal Waters, whose single "GypsyWoman (She's Homeless)" has something of a pedigree. The 27 year-old singer
is the daughter of jazz vocalist /pianist Jr. Waters and the niece of the late great
songstress/actress, Ethel Waters. While the single continues to vault up the
charts, be on the lookout for the album—a collection of eight songs that, like the
single, is produced by the Basement Boys—-due June 25.
Smash Records, currently enjoying quite a bit of sucess with Labour's "People
Are Still Having Sex," has a pretty impressive release schedule for the next fewmonths. D'Bora has the single, "Dream About You" coming out this month withthe album, E.S.P., following in June. (D'Bora is so far best known for her lead
vocals on Freestyle Orchestra's dub smash "Keep On Pumping It Up.") M. Docreleases his LP, Universal Poet, in late June, with the first single being pulled fromit in late May. Jamie Principle releases the 12" for "Do U 2 Nite" in mid-Junewith the lp following in July. And finally, the long-awaited Steve "Silk" Hurleyalbum and single are due in August. (Ten Tray and Jamie Loring will also berdeasing new material this summer.)MTV and Tommy Boy Records are collaborating on a special compilation
project that will benefitAMC Cancer Research. The two entities will release Club
MTV: Party To Go on home video, album, compact disc and casette on May 7
with the goal of raising $250,000. Party To Go will feature 60 minutes of dance
mixes, induding: M.C. Hammer's "Turn This Mutha Out," "Vanilla Ice's "Play
that Funky Music," Paula Abdul's "Knocked Out" (which, in the press rdease,
is listed as "Knocked Up," presumably Ms. Abdul's version of "Papa Don't
Preach"), Bell Biv Devoe's "Poison," Tony! Toni! Tone!'s "Feels Good," Infor-
mation $0061/5 "Think," DNA featuring Suzanne Vega with "Tom's Diner,"
Candyman's "Knockin' Boots," Digital Underground's "The Humpty Dance,"
Jane Child's "Don't Wanna Fall In Love," and Depeche Mode's "Personal Jesus."
Promotional plans include on-air support from MTV throughout May and June,
as well as spedal retail promotions.

TIMELESS RECORDSTIMELESS RECORDS RECENTLYRELEASED A 15TH ANNIVERSARYSAMPLER. The Dutch jazz label
—
which has recorded such greats as Art
Blakey & The Jazz Messengers, Bill
Evans, Lionel Hampton, Chet Baker,
Pharoah Sanders, Freddie Hubbard,
Tommy Flanagan, Eddie Harris,
George Coleman, Cedar Walton, Jes-
sica Williams, Curtis Fuller, MaiWaldron and George Adams—has
been well-known in European markets,
but hasn't had a very high profile in the
U.S. Since 1 990, however, theNew York-
based Russ Musto has been fighting to
change that.
"My association with Timeless cameabout because I was doing some work
for Rick Ballard Imports, which is oneof Timeless' distributors," Mustorecalls. "Rick had spoken to Anne de
Jong, who runs the label. When Anne(pronounced Ah-nuh), who's a man,(visited) the States, he asked me aboutthe business here. I was explaining to
him the need for proper promotion andother things, and he just asked me,'Well, do you want the job?"'
As Timeless' freelance American rep,
Musto has been doing radio promotion,
publicity and marketing in the U.S. for
the label—which is based in the small
town of Wageningen, Holland. Musto, who works out of his apartment onBleeker Street in Manhattan's Green-wich Village, notes, "I have an evolving
relationship with Timeless. Basically, 1
started off as a freelance promotion per-
son for the label. But because I've al-
lowed them to use my phone numberand address in their advertisements, it
has become much more than that. I've
done a couple of productions for themalso."
As is the case with most jazz labels,
the bulk of Timeless' sales are CDs.Musto estimates that Timeless' sales are
85% CD, 10% LPand5% cassette. "Since
I've been dealing with the label," Mustopoints out, "everything I've sent out hasbeen on CD." Musto has been sendingAmerican radio stations, magazines, etc. CDs by both Timeless' Americanand European artists—includingCosmo Intini, Barney Wilen, PerGoldschmidt, Ben van den Dungen,Jarmo Hoogendijk and The DutchSwing College Band and otherEuropean jazzmen who are better
known overseas than in the U.S.
Does Musto find it ironic that so
many American greats have recordedfor a label based in a small Dutch town?'To me," Musto replies, "irony is not the
proper word—although it is ironic in a
sense... The fact that Tommy Flanagandoes not have a contract with a majorAmerican record company is ludicrous.
American labels spend so much timelooking for that big hit that they just
don't want to deal with jazz. The reason
so many American jazz artists are
recorded on European and Japaneselabels is because those countries have a
respect for culture. It's a real indictment
of mis country's values... I spent a lot of
time walking up and down Bleeker
Street with Art Blakey, and no oneseemed to notice. You couldn't walkdown the street in Holland or Finlandwithout someone saying, "Oooh, there's Art Blakey.' It may be cliche to
say it at this point, but it is important to
continue to note that jazz musicians are
given more respect in other countries
than they are at home—and that7
s a real
shame.

—
best known for such '50s hits as "Mama,He TreatsYour Daughter Mean," "5-10-
15-
Hours," "Have A Good Time" and
'Teardrops From My Eyes"—will have
recorded a new album for Fantasy with
pianist Frank Owens, saxmen HermanRiley and Jeff Clayton, bassist A1 Mc-Kibbon, drummer Sherman Ferguson,
guitarist Rodney Jones and organist
Bobby Forrester. If jazzers recognize
those names, it's because Brown is an
R&B belter who can also handle jazz
and blues quite well... Fantasy is look-
ing at an August release for The Complete
Prestige Recordings Of John Coltrane, a
16-
CD boxed set spotlighting the ses-
sions he led prior to his radical post-bop
innovations for Atlantic and Impulse.
While Trane is best known for such
ground-breaking '60s gems such as ALove Supreme,My Favorite Things, Impres-
sions, Africa-Brass and Crescent, jazz en-
thusiasts shouldn't overlook the manyexcellent hard bop sides he recorded for
Prestige in the late '50s...

ERNESTINE ANDERSON:Live At The 1990 Concord
Jazz Festival: Third Set
(Concord Jazz CCD-4454)
When Concord Jazz releases a live
CD, you can bet there won't be any over-
dubDing—what went down is whatyou'll hear. After a spirited workout onOscar Pettiford's "Blues In The Closet,"
ianist Gene Harris, guitarist Ed Bickert,
assist Lynn Seaton and drummerHarold Jones are joined by the soulful,
gutsy jazz singer Ernestine Anderson
—
who gets down on Duke Ellington's "I
Let A Song Go Out OfMy Heart" before
turning it out on the pop standards "I
Should Care" (which boasts a smokytenor sax solo by Frank Wess),"Skylark" and "There Is No Greater
Love" and ex-Crusader Stix Hooper'sbluesy "Never Make Your Move TooSoon."
MUTABARUKA: Blakk WiBlak...K...K (Shanachie 43083)
Ya, mon! Mutabaruka is one of the
leading figures in the "dub poet" genre,
a style that is similar to but not the sameas dubwise (which influenced the
development of American rap). De Ras-
tamon Kicks knowledge on his hard-hit-
ting 12-song CD Blakk Wi Blak...K...K, ad-
dressing such subject matter as environ-
mental destruction. Black pride, racism,
gan-jah and Rastafarai. An inflamatory
attack on the governments of ex-
Jamaican rulers Michael Manley and Ed-
ward Seaga, "The People's Court" has
been banned from radio airplay inna
Jah-maica, seen. And "Ecology Poem," a
sobering commentary on environmen tal
destruction, is a song Earth First! should
adopt as its anthem.
GARY B.B. COLEMAN:
Romance Without Finance Is
A Nuisance (Ichiban ICH1107)
Singer /guitarist Gary B.B. Colemanhas another gritty, engaging electric
blues CD in the self-produced RomanceWithout Finance Is A Nuisance. As his
name infers, B.B. King is amongColeman's main influences, and King's
influence a la "The Thrill Is Gone" is
evident on melancholy originals like
"Dealin' From The Bottom Of TheDeck" and the title track. But Colemanis no clone, and his own personality
comes through loud and clear on those
two songs and more rockin' pieces suchas "Food Stamp Annie" and "Mr. B's
Frosting."
THE BILLY TAYLORTRIO: You Tempt Me(Taylor-Made/Arabesque
T1004)
Dr. Billy Taylor has put somuch effort
into his work as an educator and a jour-
nalist that he hasn't recorded as manyalbums as many of us would like. YouTempt Me, the acoustic pianist's first trio
effort since 1989's excellent White Nights
& Jazz In Leningrad, is an acoustic bebopand post-bop CD with Victor Gaskin onbass Curtis Boyd on drums. Billy
Strayhom's composition for Duke El-
lington, 'Take Tne A Train," is often
heard as an exuberant swinger, but
Taylor triumphantly turns it into a slow,
relaxed piece. Otherwise, this 57-minuteCD consists entirely of Taylor originals
ranging from the elegant yet swingin'
title track to the jazz/gospel fusion of
"Let Us Make A JoyfulNoise/Spiritual."
IRMA THOMAS: Live:
Simply The Best (Rounder
CD 2110)
Instead of going "urban contem-porary," Irma Thomas sticks with the
type of New Orleans soul thatput her
on the map on Live:Simply Tne Best,
which was recorded at Slim's in SanFrancisco in 1990. From MichaelBolton's "That's What Love Is All
About" to Jackie DeShannon's"Breakaway" to a medley of JamesBrown's "PlWse Please Please" and Otis
Redding's "I've Been Loving You TooLong," everything on this 14-track CDgets the Crescent City treatment.
THE OLYMPICS: All-Time
Greatest Hits! (DCCDZS-057)
"Hully Gully," "Western Movies"and "Good Lovin'" are among the '50s
and '60s gems included on All-Time
Greatest Hits!. But besides focusing on
the L.A. R&B group's successes, this 26-
song CD also contains lesser-known
singles like "Dance With The Teacher"
ana the previously unreleased tracks
"How Long Will It Take," "Shame,Shame, Shame" and "Bye Bye Baby."
All-Time Greatest Flits comes from the
Arvee and Demon vaults.
ICED EARTH: Iced Earth
(Century Media CM 7714-2)
Not quite thrash but harder andheavier Qian Poison or Warrant, gothic
metal posse Iced Earth shows itself to be
brutally aggressive yet melodic on its
self-titled debut album. Demons anddarkness are key themes on this CD,which boasts sucn lyrics as "Souls suck-
ed into the speed of light" and "Eyes of
fire blast his Drain /Cursing heaven andhell." Iced Earth shouldn't be confused
with Ice Cube, Ice-T, Ice Cream Tee or
The Ice Man Gerry Butler).

Cynthia Weil, which include "Just
Once," "Never Gonna Let You Go,"
"Sometimes When We Touch," "He's
So Shy" and the recent Grammy-
nominated song "Don't Know Much"
(as recorded by Linda Ronstadt and
Aaron Neville). In addition, ATV pub-
lishes copyrights by such major artists
as the Pretenders, the Pointer Sisters
and A-ha, and popular standards such
as "HitMeWith Your Best Shot," "Jump
( For My Love)," "Ramblin' Rose" and
"Lawdy Miss Clawdy." Under the
direction of ATV president Dale
Kawashima, the company has been ac-
tive in signingseveralnewwriters to the
roster. Among them are
writer/producer/artist Bryan Loren
(who wrote the worldwide Simpsons hit
"Do The Bartman," and will be releas-
ing a solo album this summer), rock
artist/producer Aldo Nova (whose
soon-to-be-released album is co-written
and co-produced by Jon Bon Jovi for
Bon Jovi's new label distributed by
PolyGram); and veteran
writer/producer Brent Maher, who is
well known for his work with The
Judds and other country artists. Levy is
already working closely with
Kawashima to develop marketing
strategies that will maximize the
strength of the ATV Music catalog...
HAMMERING IT OUT-Felton Pilate,
the award winning co-producer of M.C.
Hammer's albums to date, is back in the
studio with the Hammer readying his
follow-up LP. The majority of the
recording is taking place at Fantasy
Studios in Oakland, with some being
done at Bust It Studio and some at
Felton's Felstar Studio, also in the Bay
area. For this album, Felton has thus far
co-written with Hammer "Releasing
Some Pressure," "Love Hold," "Bum It
Up," "Count It Off" and as of this date,
one untitled cut...
STEVE TYRELL—After 15 years, B.J.
Thomas and Steve Tyrell are back
together, making great music again.
Some of the Thomas classics produced
or co-produced by Tyrell are, "I'm So
Lonesome" all the way to "Somebody
Done Somebody Wrong Song."
Thomas' new Warner Bros, album has 5
cuts with Tyrell as producer or execu-
tive producer, and include a co-written
Joe Sample tune "I'm So Glad I'm
Standing Here Today," which has
Sample on piano, David Crosby on
guest vocals as well as the Andre
Crouch Choir. I'll be looking for this
album for sure. Also, Tyrell is music
supervisor for The Life Story of Jill
Ireland, the well-known actress (and
wife of Charles Bronson), who recently
died of cancer. NBC has scheduled
Ireland's story for Mother's Day. And
last, but not least Tyrell has just finished
65 episodes of Peter Pan for Fox...
BUG MUSIC—John Lee Hooker and
Keith Richards go into the studio this
week to record anew track for Hooker's
next album. Talk about rhythm guitar!...
John Prine is nearing completion on his
new Oh Boy Records LP, produced by
Howie Epstein with assistance by Joe
"Soy Cowboy" Romersa, and
scheduled for an earlysummer release...
Marshall Crenshaw's 1st
Paradox/MCA LP, Life's Too Short, con-
tains co-writes with Jules Shear
("Everything's The Truth") & Leroy
Preston ("Delilah")... Muddy Water's "I
Can't Be Satisfied" is on George
Thorogood'snew Boogie People release...
Fred Roller (and Sy Kahn's) "New
Day" is on Laurie Lewis' (Flying Fish)
new album... "Where Is The Next One
Cornin' From?" by John Hiatt appears
on Buddy Guy's next (Silvertone) LP,
and features Mark Knopfler on guitar.
Also, by Hiatt, "Feels Like Rain" will be
on Aaron Neville's (A&M) soon to be
released solo album... The Austin City
Awards named Butch Hancock
Songwriter of the Year. MCA is re-
releasing four Joe Ely records which
contain several Butch Hancock songs...
Dave Alvin's new song, "Rich Man's
Town" will be on Katy Moffatt's new
LP. The Texas Tornadoes have cut
Dave's "So Long Baby Goodbye" and
"Haley's Comet" (co-written by Tom
Russell) for their next release. Alvin has
been busy touring acoustically with
Roger McGuinn, and playing guitar on
Belinda Carlisle's newest LP, with
Richard Feldman producing. He also
co-wrote "Hitchcock" with folk singer
Phranc for her new venture...
to be continued...

REBA’S GOT A RESTLESS HEART—Reba McEntire and Restless Heart got

Donna Ulisse
SO WHAT’S A GIRL LIKE HERDOING IN A BUSINESS LIKE THIS?
The answer is actually quite simple. At
age three, Donna Ulisse was singing on
stage in hometown Hampton, Virginia,
and since then she's never really left.
Well, maybe she has stepped off to take
care of a fewminor details-—like singing
a promotional jingle for CBS-TV, com-
muting back and forth to Nashville to
record songwriter demos and back-up
vocals on albums by artists such as Jerry
Reed, Larry Boone and David Frizzell.
Then of course, she most recently took
time off to sign a recording contractwith
Atlantic Records.
At first glance, Ulisse might not
reflect the appearance of a typical
country/western singer. Perhaps that of
a high-fashion model first comes to
mind, but it's certainly no case of mis-
taken identity. For a short time, the
Italian-descented Ulisse not only
modeled—she at one point acted as an
area representative for a national
fashion magazine and served on the
fashion board of a major department
store.
What's even more major, however,
is Ulisse's distinct singing ability, which
introduces a brand new fashion of its
own. Traditional is unquestionably the
word and when Ulisse puts it to work,
her bracing vocal-soar brings newheight and meaning to strong country
lyrics. Such impressive attributes are
brilliantly revealed on her Atlantic
debut project, including her second and
current single release entitled "When
Was The Last Time."
Perhaps it was those same qualities
that turned the ear of noted artist
manager Dale Morris, whose com-
manding direction has led supergroup
Alabama to an all-time phenomenal
level of success.
"I remember the day that I did the
demo that he heard," Ulisse reflects. "I
had finally started to make scale! You
work and do free demos, ten dollar
demos and work all thewayup to final-
ly making scale. So I'd begun doing
some ofthe bigger demos. Then thisguy
calls and says that he needs me to do
this little demo out at his house and it
wasn't scale. It was something that he
really needed to have done, so I had to
drive like an hour to get there," Ulisse
laughs. "I remember flunking all the
way there that this is for the birds and I
shouldn't have to do this anymore. Well
it was only two days after I did the
demo that Dale Morris called me and
said 'You don't know who I am, but I
thinkwe need to talk.' Imean I honestly
didn't know who he was. I was think-
ing—I don'twant to talk to this guy, and
my husband came around the comer
and asked, 'Who are you talking to?' I
said, 'Dale Morris!' He then said, 'Don't
hang up that phone—I think that's
Alabama's manager!' I met him at 12:30
that day and at 3:00 1 had a deal."
Following Ulisse's high school
graduation, she immediately began
working the dub circuit full-time as
part of her native region's most popular
country group. The Heavy Cowboys.
Although Ulisse admits that she never
really had to go through the real yucky
part of the business-breaking, she does
admit, however, that experiencing such
early-age success caused a pretty tough
re-adjustment period when she first
moved to Music City with stars in her
eyes.
"For the first two years I remember
looking at the last can of green beans on
my shelf," she says with a smile of relief.
"I moved from the Virginia Beach area,
wherewewere the topbandmaking the
top dollar, and there I was... the
Tidewater Star,” Ulisse laughs. Iguess I was
just cocky enough to think that I could come
to Nashville and do the same thing. I got
here though, and reality struck. I was out of
a job and nobody cared who I was. There
were hundreds of better singers than me.
Yeah, it was devastating but at the same
time it was inspiring, because Irealized then
that I was not the best that I could be.
Rejection—the big fear," ponders
Ulisse. "I guess the thing that you have
to keep believing in is yourself and that
you can't take rejection personally. I'm
a firm believer in persevering and not
taking rejection personally, because in
this business if you do...you're history!
In addition to climbing the charts
with her second single, gaining tour-
dates and currently proving to be the
best that she can be, Donna Ulisse will
be the first to admit that hanging onto
the last can of green beans doesn't have
to last forever.

I SINGLE RELEASES
OUT OF THE BOXRANDY TRAVIS: "Point Of Light" (Warner Bros. 4852)
Producer: Kyle Lehning
Writers: Don Schlitz/Thom Schuyler
What an honorable song, and it's Travis who was fortunate enough to record it!
"Point Of Light," which presents a "walk-on-faith /stand-for-something" theme, is
neither a cry-the-blues tune, nor a western swinger. It is, however, a perfect
traditional country number, excellently produced, well delivered, and aimed to
please a lot of listeners.
FEATURE PICKSPATTY LOVELESS: "Blue Memories" (MCA 54075)
Producer: Tony BrownWriters: Paul Kennerley/Karen Brooks
For a song entitled "Blue Memories," Loveless certainly adds the appropriate
delivery. Don't let the title be a teaser though. This country dapper bounces across
some rather swift, rhythmic undertones, as Loveless pours out a soul-spilling
performance about a good love gone bad.
DON WILLIAMS: "Lord Have Mercy On A Country Boy" (RCA2820)
Producers: Don Williams/Garth Fundis
Writer: Bob McDill
Sometimes a good ol' country boy just doesn't have it so easy, but Williams is hear
to tell us thatwe just gotta hang in there! Complete with fishing holes, willow trees
and wild turkeys, this fiddle-flavored story about surviving in the tity paints a dear
picture with its lyrics. Williams, of course, is the praised artistwho turns the colors
a little brighter with his smoky-textured vocals and hearty delivery.
HANK WILLIAMS, JR.: "If It Will It Will" (Warner BrosyCurb
26536)
Producers: Barry Beckett/Hank Williams, Jr. /Jim Ed NormanWriter: Hank Williams, Jr.
Hank kicks this southern shaker off with a quaint little talk during the introduction,
but within due time, a quaint little talk turns into a lot of southern fried guitar licks,
heavy beats of the drum and a tale of how life goes on. "If It Will It Will," which
sparks from the current Pure Hank package, whips out a country-meets-rock
explosion, with Hank showing off a little bit of the "Elvis" in his soul.
TRISHA YEARWOOD: "She's In Love With The Boy" (MCA54076)
Producer: Garth Fundis
Writer: Jon ImsWhy is country music maintaining its phenomenal growth explosion? NewcomerTrisha Yearwood has the answer, but don't expect her to tell you—simply listen to
her MCA debut single! Yearwood's soul-rooted vocals spill out with gripping
control and an emotion-driving charge that's essentially tranquilizing. "She's In
Love With The Boy" flaunts a love-conquers-all theme—extremely visual and
pumping hard with burning energy and spicy instrumentation.

accomplishments include artists such as Tim Malchek, Chris LcDoux, Robin Lee,
Mickey Jones and I Ial Gibson.

INDIE FEATURE PICKSU NIGHTRIDER: "I'm A Changed Man" (Pleasure PL-0121290)
Producer: Wink Tyler
Writers: J. Nava
PLAY IT, PLAY IT, PLAY IT! If ever there's an independent record soaring with
extremely major qualities, this up-tempo ballad about the effects of heartbreak is
right on target. The revelation of Nightrider, an eight-piece band based in Victoria,
Texas, is long overdue. Stunning instrumentation, production and a lead vocalist
who could be described as country music's Michael Bolton, create a commandingperformance. If you hold back on this one, radio, you'll miss out on one of those
"once in a blue-moons!"
J.L. THOMPSON: "I'll Be Over You" (Gallery II G-2048)
Producers: Jack Gale/Jim Pierce
Writer: Lonnie Carter
Gallery recording artist J.L Thompson makes a very favorable impression with
this tender-felt traditional. "I'll Be Over You," which inspires a broken love'sonward
look, presents an emotion-moving melody and an inviting vocal performance by
Thompson.
BO “T”: "You Can Love Without Me Now" (DCT 615)
Producer: Norro Wilson
Writers: Johnny Russell/Charles Quillen
Where has this guy been hiding? When it comes to new and interesting voices
entering the scene. Bo "T" obviously knows the importance of good-timing. In
addition to Bo's southern-husky vocals enhancing this stellarly written and
produced ballad, "You Can Love Without Me Now" also sparks an overall produc-
tion that's destined to lure listeners in close.
JIMMY SNYDER: "She's Never Been A Star" (Badger BG-2021)
WHISKEY CREEK: "Don't Light My Fire" (Gallery II G-2049)

NAMA FinancialSeminar Is SetFor Nov. 15-17
CHICAGO—The 11th annual NAMA Financial
Management Semin ar has been scheduled for Nov.
15-17 in Las Vegas, where a lineup of experienced
vending managers will detail various profit-build-
ing techniques in a hands-on, case-study forum.
“This popular seminar—for vending operators
and by vending operators—focuses on the practical
financial management issues that are key to the
vending/foodservice industry,” stated Richard M.
Geerdes, NAMA’s director of membership, conven-
tions and education.
The seminar program will cover a full range of
pertinent topics, including profit goals; profit
plans, ROI and other measurements; operations
procedures; establishing the value of a vending
company; among others.
The registration fee for attendance includes the
seminar textbook and related materials, plus a
cocktail reception on Friday evening, Nov. 15. The
cost is $395.00 for the first person from an NAMA
member company and $350.00 for each additional
person from the same company.
Further information may be obtained by con-
tacting the NAMA Education Dept., 20 N. Wacker
Drive, Suite 3500, Chicago, IL 60606-3102.
contributions to the coin operated amusement industry" at the Saturday night
banquet (5/5), which will take place during the Northeast Regional trade showat the Trump Regency in Atlantic City. One of the major business sessions will be
held on Saturday morning. The topic will be video lottery and the guest speakers
will include New Jersey Senator Tom Foy (sponsor of the AMOA-NJ video lottery
bill), AMOA-NJ lobbyist Dennis Riley, New Jersey assemblyman Tony Marsella
and AMOA prexy Jim Trucano. Further info may be obtained by contacting SueMatterson at 518-439-0981.
POSITIVE VIBES. Things are going quite well, thank you, at World Wide Dist.
Prexy Fred Skor reports that music equipment is selling and the spring buying
season has opened up beautifully to the point of, hopefully, leading the way to an
improved market climate.
NEW OFFICERS During the AMOA board of directors meeting in Scottsdale,
Arizona, a slate of new officers for the 1991-92 term was nominated and approved
by the board. They are: Eugene Urso (Madison Coin Machine-Monona, WI),
president; Craig Johnson (Tataka-Salt Lake City, UT), first vice president; R.A.
Green III (Rosemary Coin Machines-Myrtle Beach, SC), treasurer; and Tami
Norberg Pau lsen (C&N Sales Co.-Manka to, MN), secretary; who will all take office
this coming September at Expo '91 in Las Vegas.
NICE G0IN’. Chatted a bit with Chicago operator Kem Thom of Western
Automatic Music, whoenjoyed a terrific winter, collectionwise; and is anticipating
more than decent business during the spring and summer season. As he said, "If
you've got good product, it will earn." Amen to that! Pins have been doing
extremely well, he said, especially since Western revised the pricing structure to
one play for 50 cents, two plays for 75 cents and three plays for a dollar. High Impact
and Street Fighter are among the other good earners he singled out; along with air
hockey games, skee balls; and, of course, CD jukeboxes. Locations around the
ballparks will certainly put the frosting on the cake this season. There's Wrigley
Field (home of the Cubs) and the new Comiskey Park (home of the Sox) which
opened on April 18. Latter is a gorgeous, S135 million dollar facility, which the fans
loved on opening day; only to have their spirits dampened when the Sox lost to
Detroit! Aw!
AROUND THE ROUTEBY CAMILLE COMPASIO
LET’S START WITH AN UPDATE on the cigarette vending machine situation in
Chicago. The original deadline has been extended to June 30, on which day (and
thereafter) cigarette vending machines can no longer be operated in Chicago,
except in "taverns" patronized by adults. This means they cannot be installed in
restaurants, gas stations, snack shops and the multitude of other locations that are
accessible to persons under the age of 18. Can you imagine the number ofmachinesthat are goinhg to have to be pulled out! Ops stand to lose anywhere from 25 to
30 percent of their income as a result of this ordinance. Besides which, their license
fees have been increased from $108.00 to $150.00! Ouch!... On the other hand, a bill
to legalize video lotteries in the state of Illinois was recently introduced—HouseBill #1976, to be exact At this point, lobbyists are at work, the public relations
wheels are in motion and Illinois ops are exerting their combined efforts—andhoping for the best.
WATCH FOR IT. The new piece from Kaneko USA is quite a departure from its
current game. Gals Panic, which continues to be in demand, by the way. Prexy
Marty Glazman said collections have been consistently good, in both versions (for
adults and for minors). At any rate, Berlin Wall is the firm's new 2-player horizontal
kit, and it's based on a light-hearted theme involving a humorous confrontation
between some cute characters and a monster, the objective being to hammer the
monster, capture him and then pound him through the hole in the wall. Soundslike fun, doesn't it. To add to the flavor, the game has digitized pictures of the
Berlin Wall. Marty tells us it is designed to appeal to female players as well as kids
of all ages.
OUR CONGRATULATIONS TO AMOA-NJ prexy Frank "The Crank" Seninsky(Alpha Omega Amuse. & Sales) who has been chosen "man of the year" by the
Northeast Regional state group, which represents the state associations of NewJersey, New York City andNew York Sta te. He will be honored for his "outstanding
Williams’ SlugfestPLAYBALL! Slugfest, the innovative baseball
novelty machine from Williams Electronics Games,Inc. brings America’s pastime to life with a com-plete entertainment package that is in a league byitself. Indeed, it delivers all ofthe thrills, excitment
and strategy of real baseball—and then some.
There’s the line-ups of hitters on the opposing
teams who apply their own unique batting statis-
tics, strengths and weaknesses; the result being
that the values ofthe seven targets at the top ofthe
playfield change from batter to batter for possible
hits or outs. For added realism, players can use a
pinch hitter at critical times during the game, which will raise the center ramp for a shot at an
upper deck home run. By the way, pinch hitters do
not have any ‘out’ targets lit—only possible hits!
As for pitchers, they have an arsenal of every-
thing from a big league fastball to a curve, change-
up or screwball via four separate buttons on the
control panel. Slugfest has also introduced a newelement of excitement with base stealing; wherebyextra buttons on the control panel allow for somefast-paced running and throwing to advance run-
ners into scoring positions, or even a daring steal
of home.Just as in the ball park, the play action is
accompanied by the cheers of the crowd along with
the ususal fanfare from stadium vendors and heck-
lers; in addition to which Slugfest features a dot
matrix display scoreboard that further enhancesthe excitement of play, plus spectacular light
shows, fireworks and other special effects.
But that’s not all. Slugfest automatically vendscollectible baseball cards with a specially designeddispenser that holds up to 1 ,000 cards, which is anindustry first. Operators have the option of modify-
ing the machine to suit specific needs with optional
ticket dispenser capability, bill acceptor or amuse-ment only settings.
Further information about Slugfest may be ob-
tained through factory distributors or by contactingWilliams Electronics Games, Inc. at 3401 N.California Ave., Chicago, IL 60618.

Atari’s BatmanATARI GAMES HAS CAPTURED all of the
drama and action of the hit movie in its new Bat-
man video game, which the factory introduced at
ACME ’91. It even features digitized photos and the
actual movie soundtrack.
This one-player game features a joystick,
punch/shoot and jump/kick buttons which players
use for control as they take on The Joker and his
Goons. Batman’s pursuit of The Joker takes youthrough Gotham City, puts you at the wheel of the
Batmobile and allows you to fly the Batwing.
In the end, players share in Batman’s truium-
phant victory over The Joker atop GothamCathedral.
“The timeless strength of the Batman property
and box office success make the game a draw for
players of all ages,” stated product manager Jerry
Momoda. “Hard-hitting action and dynamic gameplay will challenge the best ofplayers. Outstanding
graphics combined with digitized images and ac-
tual soundtrack from the movie give players the
feeling of interacting with the movie,” he added. To
complete the package, the cabinet graphics aboundin photo stills to further capitalize on the movie’s
effects.
THE SCENARIO FOCUSES ON THE NewEarth Solar System colonies that have been over-
run by Saurians, who launched an attack, without
warning, from Apocalypse, the mobile planet-sized
war factory. On-the-scene reports indicate that
human captives are being “mutated” into reptiles
for slave labor. The situation appears hopeless.
Enter Strikeforce, a team of ground-based marineinfantry, carrying the latest jetpacks and mostlethal weaponry, as well as aerial jet-fighters
equipped with the best possible combat artillery;
their mission being to free the colonists anddestroy Apocalypse.
Strikeforce is the latest video game from Mid-way Manufacturing Company. It is a one or two-
player cooperative game that features horizontal
scrolling action and allows players to control their
own destiny along with that of the surviving
colonists in a remarkable solar system of fascinat-
ing eerie worlds.
Players can decide which planets to attack,
which weapons to use (timewarps, firestars,
megabombs, shields, atomics, photons and star
gems), when to purchase additional firepower and,
ultimately, when to take on Apocalypse and wipe
out the evil Saurians.
The unique joystick controls provide full
maneuverability, allowing players to fly in anydirection over the landscape of any of the NewEarth Solar System planets. As players fly low,
marines scouting the surface of a planet in search
of hidden weapons or stranded colonists, can at-
