Vocations Sunday
Vocation, Vocation, Vocation We are all called. God has given each of us gifts to use for the life of the kingdom. But we don’t always know exactly what it is we are called to, and we don’t always have a clear plan to follow. Julie Jones, the Diocesan Secretary tells how her call has unfolded in unexpected ways:
You never know what God has in store for you, but it has always mattered to me to be whole hearted about my desire to serve Him.
When I was 29 I felt sure God was calling me to the ordained ministry and began a journey of discernment with my Vicar and the Diocesan Director of Ordinands. I also longed to be married and have children and both of these things felt like part of who God was calling me to be. A year later I met Stewart (my now husband, who had been recently widowed and had a five year old daughter) and it became clear that I could not easily pursue our relationship and the training route at the same time. I figured that if I married Stewart, I would have a ministry even if it wasn’t the one I had anticipated. And that has been true, I have had many opportunities to serve but the specific call of God has never left me, but it has changed over time. As Stewart and I moved around the country, successive Bishops used my professional HR skills to help in their Dioceses on a voluntary basis.
In 2009 no one was more surprised than me to be offered the Diocesan Secretary’s job in this Diocese, a new call on my life that has used much of my previous experience and my heart for mission and people. I love this job and all the opportunities it has afforded me and believe that it is the ministry I am called to, albeit a different one that I envisaged all those years ago. I thank God regularly for the way he has honoured my call and the way he continues to surprise me.

Christians across the Diocese are being urged to become organ donors as part of their giving.
Pioneering work to promote ‘death-confident congregations’ has stimulated conversation on the matter through initiatives like Grave Talk, where people discuss death and dying in a safe space in their local church.
David Primose, Diocesan Director of Transforming Communities, said: “What if the church saw blood and organ donation as part of its giving? It is as part of Christian stewardship, and reflecting our commitment to practicing generosity, that we approach this sensitive and complex topic.”

Black and ethnic minority (BAME) communities particularly need donors. Dr Satya Sharma, a retired Hindu GP who recently spoke at St Philip Church, West Bromwich, said: “The need for donation is about three
times higher in BAME communities but registered donors are less than one per cent. BAME communities have to wait 12 months longer for donation due to lack of organs. The chances of acceptance of organs are slightly higher if these are from same ethnic background.”
Dr Sharon Hiley, from St Marys and All Saints in Bradley, added: “As a GP I see the need for donation as I come across patients with various forms of organ failure. For a Christian the decision to donate is a positive way of helping those in need and a way of following Jesus’ example of sacrifice, giving our bodies so that others may continue to live.”

Hilderstone Heritage, Part Nineteen
I am indebted to the late Mrs Winifred Bossen for much of the
information about the history of Methodism in Hilderstone.
In 1791 a house at Hilderstone was registered for Protestant
Dissenters by John Ralph, Minister, and witnessed by William
Dixon (wholesale shoemaker, Stone), Francis Joule (brewer),
John Fonell, John Spencer and Thomas Sargant, Gentleman.
Thomas Sargant then registered his own house for Protestant
Dissenters on 26th December 1811, witnessed by Charles
Lasby, Richard Smith (miller), George Bowers (farmer),
William Carter, John Dunn (victualler at Spot Gate),
Humphrey Parsons (minister in the Stafford circuit), John
Ralph and S Phillips.
It is not known where either of these houses were but oral
tradition places at least one of them near to Mill Farm.
On 9th January 1821 Thomas Sargent made his will in which
he directed that his house at Hilderstone be let, together with
all his household goods and furniture, at a reduced rent, until
the house was sold after six years (1827). During this time it
was to be made available to the Methodist persuasion, “to be
used for the purpose of preaching, teaching, exhorting,
singing and praying”; the tenant of the house was to provide
food and drink at no cost to the church.
On 19th July 1822 a codicil was added in which he declared
that he had leased a plot of land at Hilderstone to the
Wesleyan Connexion measuring 15 x 15 yards for the term of
999 years at the yearly rent of one peppercorn (if required).

A chapel was erected in 1822 on land owned by Thomas
Gilbert. This was built off Cowleasows Lane where Glenroyd
now stands. A third registration was applied for on 20th
December 1828 by James Rosser of Stafford (Minister) and
this related to this chapel. A pen and ink drawing of the 1822
Chapel survives.
According to the Religious Census of 1851 the Chapel had 60
free seats and 40 others. On Sunday 30th March 1851 the
estimated attendance was 30 in the afternoon and 50 in the
evening.
This chapel was replaced by the present building whose
foundation stone was laid on 30th May 1894 with completion
on 31st October in the same year. The date stone from the
original chapel, and shown on the pen and ink drawing, was
incorporated into the fabric of the new building.
The original trustees were Cornelius & JC Mycock, George &
Matthew Meddings, Joseph Bossen, Thomas Gilbert, William
Martin, Henry Fisher, Aaron Colclough, David Shemelt,
Willaim Brown and W B Rudge. The last trust was formed in
1970
Sadly the congregation dwindled and the upkeep of the
building became untenable. This led to the chapel being sold
and converted into a private house in the mid-1990s. The
modern house has retained many original features, and
externally the chapel remains little altered architecturally. At
some point a large window at the rear of the building was
reduced in size as, apparently, it let in too much light!

Thy Kingdom Come: Beacon Event
In response to the invitation from our Archbishops to pray between
Ascension and Pentecost for more people to come to know Jesus
Christ
Lichfield Cathedral is hosting a Cathedral Beacon event
Pentecost Sunday 4 June 2017
4pm – 7pm
This is a free event and all are welcome.
We will begin with a service of praise and worship, with music
provided by Wade Street Church, Lichfield, and with an address by
Bishop Mark Rylands, Bishop of Shrewsbury.
This is followed by an opportunity to explore prayer stations,
including a space prayerfully to eat your picnic (please bring one with
you!)
At 6pm we will conclude with Sung Compline by candlelight with

Hilderstone Parish Council Tree Pruning and Surgery within the Hilderstone Conservation Area A reminder that before you prune or remove trees on properties that are within the Hilderstone Conservation Area you must get authorisation from Stafford Borough Council. It is an offence to carry out any work to a tree in a conservation area without prior permission, even if there is no preservation order on the tree. The Hilderstone Conservation area includes the properties at Eastholme and part of The Meadows estate as well as in the centre of the village. The Best Kept Village volunteers work hard to maintain many of the public areas including regular Saturday morning sessions in the Churchyard. Please support their efforts by picking up any litter that you pass when walking around the village; sadly a great deal is thrown from cars passing through the village. If you live near to one of the public flower boxes in the village it would be very helpful if you could water it in dry periods to keep the displays in good condition. We hope that you will enjoy the fabulous children’s posters on display in the bus shelters again this year. These have been created by the Year Two pupils of Green Lea School and other children that live in Hilderstone but attend different schools. Dog Fouling and Control There is still an ongoing problem with dog mess being left by some owners in the village. There have also been a few recent incidences of dogs roaming around the village on their own or off their lead when with the owner. Apart from the issue of dog fouling this could also cause a serious road accident should the dog run into the road.

PLEASE NOTE - It is illegal to leave dog mess in a public area even if you are not the owner of the dog (children walking dogs on their own should be instructed to pick up the mess). Where evidence can be obtained a fixed penalty fine of £75 will be issued. Persistent offenders can be prosecuted further with a maximum fine of up to £1000. Bagged dog mess can be placed in any public waste bin, although the bins in the infant play area should not be used. Parents should ensure that children walking dogs are fully aware that they should also pick up the poo! To make 20 yummies you will need
Ingredients
4 ounces margarine
4 ounces caster sugar 2 eggs
8 ounces self raising flour 2 large teaspoons of set honey 2 ounces porridge oats
Method
Put the margarine, honey and sugar into a bowl and mix
well together. Put in the eggs and mix again. Sieve the flour into the bowl with the oats and mix very
carefully until the flour and oats are all mixed in.
Put large teaspoonfuls onto baking trays spread out a little, to allow for spreading during cooking and cook at gas 4 or 180c or fan oven 180c for about 15 minutes

COUNTRYSIDE WATCHER – JUNE LORDS AND LADIES
As I walk down the lane I see that many Ferns, Stinging Nettles and Grasses are as tall as the hedgerows and have taken over the banks. Cow Parsley, Queen Anne’s Lace, is still there, but no longer white. Green, elongated fruits waiting to open, have replaced the white flowers. Also there, scrambling over the hedge is Cleavers.
Going on down the lane, I see that the fields, cut for early silage, are now beginning to grow green again. The Council grass cutter has trimmed a strip of grass on the lane-side edge of the verge. Now, in the newly grown grass, the round flower heads of White Clover, smelling faintly of honey, can be seen.
One flower I see with interest. Growing on the bank at the bottom of the drumble is Lords and Ladies, also known as Cuckoo Pint. This flower loves deep shade and grows in clumps among the tree branches. It is a flower that has always attracted me.
In January, bright green, arrow-shaped leaves grow at the end of long, upright stems. The
flowers appear in late Spring. They grow at the bottom of a wide, yellowish-green hood, pointed at the top, called a spathe. These flowers are purple, club-like spikes. The female flowers are at the bottom of the spike. Above them are barren ones and the male flowers are at the top of the spike. The flowers produce a strong, unpleasant smell. The smell attracts insects that crawl inside the flowers searching for nectar. In the flowers, the insects rub the pollen off the male flowers and fertilize the females. Trapped insects die and can be seen on the inside of the spathe.
Now it is Summer, there are no flowers on the stalk, as they have become a tight mass, or spike, of poisonous berries that were red first and are now green. I still look at them and smile.
In the Middle Ages this flower was associated with lovers. It has several local names such as ‘sweethearts’, ‘silly lovers’, ‘Adam and Eve’. In the 16
th century it was known as ‘Cuckoo Pintle’, later ‘Cukoo Pint’. In
Elizabethan times starch was extracted from the roots and used to stiffen the linen ruffs worn then. ‘Jack-in-the-pulpit’ is a name given to this flower because of its unusual shape
I walk on, admiring the sunlight twinkling on the gently swaying trees.

Information for Hiring Hilderstone Village Hall
With effect from June 1st 2015 it will be a set fee for all of the facilities of
the hall, which are as follows:
Hilderstone Residents: £15.00 per hour
Non Residents: £19.00 per hour
We can also offer special rates for Parties, and regular users of the village
hall. Please feel free to discuss with the booking secretary what your
requirements are.
