Sick Kids Can’t Wait

“Right now, I’m performing a pediatric liver transplant.”you may not think of supermodel cindy crawford as a transplant surgeon. fortunately, she does not have to be a doctor to make a huge difference in the lives of hospitalized kids.

“By supporting American family children’s hospital at the UW, i am proud to do my part in helping save a child’s life,” says cindy.

right now, your donation can help too – by helping build urgently needed additional critical care units where we care for very sick children.

please visit uwhealthkids.org and give what you can.

Because sick kids can’t wait.

We wanted to check in and see what was going on with the Memorial Union renovation and found this short blog post from July 2012 discussing the packing and preserving of the historic pieces in the Memorial Union:

“The first phase of the Memorial Union Reinvestment is officially underway, and we have been

feverishly working over the past few months to preserve and pack up the historic pieces in the Memorial Union that make this place so unique. We hired conservators to de-install and crate the Paul Bunyan murals to protect them from construction vibrations, de-installed and crated all of Der Stiftkseller murals that were executed on canvas

(including the “Battle of Beer and Wine”), packed up all of the Der Stiftkseller beer steins to protect them from vibrations, moved dozens and dozens of historic furniture pieces that will return to the West Wing after renovations are completed, and more! Needless to say, we’ve been busy here at Memorial Union.”

The arts mean business in Dane CountyRobert Lynch, President and CEO of Americans for the Arts, introduced the latest local findings in the national Arts & Economic Prosperity IV study. It’s good news for both the arts community and Dane County.

“The arts mean business in Dane County. The Arts & Economic Prosperity IV study shows that the nonprofit arts and culture are a significant industry in Dane County—one that generates $145.5 million in total economic activity. This spending—$69.2 million by nonprofit arts and culture organizations and an additional $76.3 million in event-related spending by their audiences—supports 5,119 full-time equivalent jobs, generates $97.3 million in household income to local residents, and delivers $13.8 million in local and state government revenue.

“America‘s artists and arts organizations live and work in every community from coast-to-coast—fueling creativity, beautifying our cities, and improving our quality of life. In my travels across the country, business and government leaders often talk to me about the challenges of funding the arts amid shrinking resources and alongside other pressing needs. They worry about jobs and the economy. Is their region a magnet for attracting and retaining a skilled and innovative workforce? How well are they competing in the high-stakes race to attract new businesses?” Lynch said.

Lynch continues, “Arts and culture organizations are resilient and entrepreneurial businesses. They employ people locally, purchase goods and services from within

the community, and market and promote their regions. Arts organizations are rooted locally; these are jobs that cannot be shipped overseas. Like most industries, the Great Recession left a measurable financial impact on the arts—erasing the gains made during the pre-recession years, and leaving 2010 expenditures three

percent behind their 2005 levels... Yet, even in a down economy, some communities saw an increase in their arts spending and employment. As the economy rebounds, the arts are well poised for growth. They are already producing new and exciting work—performances and exhibitions and festivals that entertain, inspire, and attract audiences.”*

Mr. Lynch concludes that, “The findings from the Arts & Economic Prosperity IV study send a clear and welcome message: leaders who care about community and economic vitality can feel good about choosing to invest in the arts.”
