Made up to two main parts (the central and the peripheral nervous systems) that work together as a team to monitor, coordinate and control the activities of the entire body.Peripheral Nervous System: (PNS)•Made up of a network of nerves that extend throughout the body•Gathers information and delivers it to and from the CNSCentral Nervous System: (CNS)•Body’s main control center and consists of the brain and the spinal cord•Processes information and sends instructions to the other parts of the bodyPeripheral Nervous System:Nerve system consists of two types of cells: 1.Neurons: which are made up of:
a.Cell Body (with a nucleus)b.Axons: Carry impulses away from the nerve cell bodyc.Dendrites: Carry impulses toward the cell body
Nervous System
Types of Neurons• Synapse are junctions with tiny gaps between adjacent neurons and between neurons and the organs to which they send messages
a. sensory neurons- conduct impulses from sense organs to brain
b. motor neurons- carry impulses away from brain/spinal cord to muscles/organs
c. interneurons- carry impulses between sensory and motor neurons
• between sensory neurons and motor neurons
Reflex Arch:The pathway of neurons that carries the nerve impulses for an automatic, involuntary response to a stimulus
Organs Include: Kidneys, Ureters, Urinary Bladder, Urethra Functions and Locations: Kidneys:2 on either side located at the bottom of the rib cage near the backRemoves wastes from the blood and processes them into yellow colored liquidControls the amount of salts, water, minerals and vitamins in the bloodRegulates the pH and volume of the blood170 liters of water filter through the kidneys
Dialysis:When kidneys fail people must under go dialysis every week until they receive a transfer. Dialysis rids the body of its wastes Kidney Stones: Form from the crystallization of mineral salts and uric acid salts in the urineStones can block the passage of urine, causing extreme pain in the kidneys and urinary tract
Urethra:Located under the bladderLonger in the male than the femaleTube that gets ride of urine
Ureters:
Long thin tubes that connects the kidneys with the urinary bladder
Urinary Bladder:Stores urine
Excretory system
