Law Enforcement and the Hysteria around Sex Trafficking

Dr. Yasmin Nair is a Chicago-based academic, writer, and activist. Her work has appeared in publications like GLQ, The Progressive, make/shift, Time Out Chicago, Windy City Times, Bitch, and Maximum Rock’n’Roll.

Mess Hall Academic in Residence 2011-2012, Nair is currently writing a book about neoliberalism and affect, titled Strange Love. Nair is part of the editorial collective of Against Equality, a member of the Queer Migration Research Network, and a member of the Chicago grassroots organization Gender JUST. Owen Daniel-McCarter is one of the founding collective members of TJLP (the Transformative Justice Law Project of Illinois) which provides free, zealous, life-affirming, and gender-affirming holistic legal services to poor transgender and gender non-conforming people targeted by the criminal legal system in Chicago, as well as folks in prison throughout Illinois. TJLP provides legal services with a commitment to three core values: the right to gender self-determination, vision towards a long-term goal of prison abolition, and dedication to resisting state-sponsored systems of control through transformative justice and community empowerment models.

Daniel-McCarter also teaches at DePaul University and co-teaches at DePaul Law School in the Civil Rights Clinic.

Moving beyond criminalization as a response to gendered violence

Traci Schlesinger is an activist, teacher, and scholar committed to abolishing prisons and dismantling white supremacy. She has published numerous articles examining the role of criminal laws and criminal processing on the production and maintenance of mass racialized incarceration, work which is widely cited by scholars and the courts.

Her book, The Limits of Equality: Sentencing Policy and Colorblind Racism, was published by VDM Press in 2011. Schlesinger is an Assistant Professor of Sociology at DePaul University.
