MACMILLAN LIFE SKILLS CULTURAL AWARENESS Unit 4 – People around Us Teacher’s Notes Objective Raise students’ awareness of the concept of respect and expand their vocabulary. Suggested Procedure This activity challenges students to analyze words associated with the concept of respect. In order to make the lesson more interactive, make sure all students (or pairs) have access to a monolingual dictionary (print or digital). Tell student they’ll receive a Worksheet with a Word Search activity and that all the words are related to one idea/concept (respect). Pair students and give them the worksheets face down (meaning they can’t look). Count to 3, have them flip over the worksheet, and ask them what the concept is. TIP: the answer is in the instructions! Students complete the activity. Correct with whole group. Clarify the meaning of each expression. Since the focus is on the concept of respect, the use of their native language (L1) might be necessary. ALTERNATIVE / EXTENSION Have them using the dictionary to look for examples of the use of the word respect. Can they find the words from the Word Search in the examples from the dictionary? Assign different expressions to different pairs to save time. Students find the definition and create an example for the expression. TO HAVE RESPECT Definition: A feeling of admiration and approval. Example: Everyone should have respect for people with different opinions. Life skill background Cultural awareness is all about recognizing and understanding that we all have different values shaped by our diverse cultural backgrounds. What we consider to be “normal” behavior in one country can be entirely different in another, and respecting this allows us to grow in both our personal and professional lives.
