Welcome back, I hope you all had a safe
and relaxing break. Term 3 is already set to be another busy term. We have included a calendar of events for the term so far. Please keep this handy as I’m sure there will be more to add as the term progresses.
NAIDOC
Thank you to our Aboriginal Education Team for putting together a wonderful NAIDOC celebration and of course to the community members for attending and sharing this occasion with us. A special thanks to our local elders for attending and to Dee for providing delicious bush tucker for everyone. Highlights this year included the dance workshop for boys delivered by Michael Laurie, the weaving workshops delivered by Maddie Ritchie, the Indigenous Games coordinated by Ms Chorley and delivered by our school leaders and not to forget the fantastic finale of our assembly, Mrs Ritchie’s class singing ‘I am Australian’ in Yaygirr.
Opera Australia
Students were treated to an amazing performance of ‘The Owl and the Pussycat’ from Opera Australia. It was lovely to see the student engagement and excellent audience behaviour. We look forward to their return next year with another new and exciting performance.
K-2 Excursion – Iluka
All reports from students and staff attest to a great day out. A highlight was a cultural session with Zac Eamons-Gardiner (year 6 student) and his father, Shane. The students came back with interesting stories and even a canvas they had painted using ochre.
Sports Carnival
Please join us at Wherrett Park next Friday for our athletics carnival. It’s a great opportunity to share some time with our school community and support students in their athletic endeavours.
Recorder Group- Opera House
All of the hard work has been done, the sweet sounds of the recorder ensemble have been heard across the playground during rehearsals. Good luck to everyone on this very exciting adventure to play at the Opera House. Students will travel by train to Sydney with Mrs Moore on Tuesday the 30th and return on August the 1st. What an amazing experience, have fun!
Assembly
We are having a whole school assembly this Friday at 11:45am due to the Athletics Carnival being held next week. There will be a performance from the recorder ensemble for those who can’t make it to the Opera House.
Debating
Our debate team have been honing their skills in preparation for next week’s debate at Palmers Island Public School. The next challenge will be against Gulmarrad, here at Maclean on August 15th. Parents are very welcome to attend
What’s New
The ministers for the environment have been working on a recycling initiative. We will now have a 3 bin system in each classroom and also a large recycling bin for the whole school. Well done ministers!
The school has also purchased new bins with lids (to keep those very clever birds out) and extra seating for students in the eating area.
Thank you to Damo Saffigna, the completion of the sandstone looks amazing and has created a wonderful entrance to our school.
Regards, Carolyn Carolyn Philliips

CLASS LIBRARY DAYS ARE…

NEWS, NEWS, NEWS The best gift any parent can give a child is the love of books and the joy and benefits of independent reading for fun. Children who read at home, or are read to, have a head start on reading success in school. Up to twice a term, during the school year, we send home the Book Club catalogue with a different selection of books offered for all ages. The books span a wide range of children’s reading levels and interests and are inexpensive (some books cost as little as $2).
Friday August 2 Wherrett Park (behind Netball courts). All students will meet at school and will walk down in their classes once rolls have been marked. MPS would like to encourage as many parents as possible to come along and watch all the students participate. High Jump and discus finals will be held at school prior to the carnival.
Please dress in your finest house colours.
Yaegl – Yellow Clarence - Blue
Athletics Carnival Canteen Any donations of cakes, slices or cupcakes for our stall at the Athletics Carnival on Friday August 2 would be greatly appreciated. If you don’t have time to bake we always appreciate bought goodies. There will be a full operating canteen down there for all students and spectators to purchase from. The menu is attached. Of course it can’t run without volunteers and we do realise that everyone wants to watch their child but as little as ½ an hour will help. Thank you very much!

High Jump Finals
Lesson Times MPS music ensemble rehearsals run in the mornings before school from 8.30 to 9.10am. Mondays – band, Wednesdays – percussion ensemble, Thursdays – string ensemble, and Fridays – recorder group. Please drop your children down near the music room in Clarence Street where they will be supervised by myself, Mrs Moore for the duration of the rehearsal. I also conduct 30 minute private music lessons in piano, singing, violin, flute, clarinet, saxophone and percussion. At present, my timetable is full. Teachers from the Clarence Valley Conservatorium are available for lessons in trumpet, trombone, piano, drums and guitar. Please contact the front office for Conservatorium enrolment forms.
