Dear Parents and Caregivers,
Welcome to Term 2
I’d like to wish everyone a sincere welcome to Term 2 at Mackay North State School, particularly our new families. Well - what a weird way to finish Term 1! There is so much that happens in school in the last week of a term, but Cyclone Debbie’s antics interrupted all of that.
Firstly, I hope that everyone in our school community came through the cyclone unscathed. You will have noticed that the school survived the weather event reasonably well; some shade sails, trees and minor building damage, but all repairable
over the coming weeks and months.
Secondly, as to all of the events/celebrations that occur in the last week, we will endeavour to deliver them during these first two weeks. Please keep an eye on the skoolbag app and communication books for more information.
Easter Hat Parade
On Wednesday we held our Easter Hat Parade in the School Hall. Mums, Dad and students, well done on the imaginative way you created some fantastic Easter hats. The students enjoyed parading their creations for all to see.

Looking Back Over Term 1
One of things we all tend to forget when we get to a school holiday break, is to look back over the past term and recognise that there have been opportunities to celebrate achievements and events. Our school is certainly no different to any other school in that manner. During Term 1 the following events are worthy of mention and are cause for all community members to celebrate.
Term 1 events have included; successful sports and cultural captain elections and
the induction of all school leaders into the offices, before school prep activities and lunch time skipping activities (run by the student leaders), Years P, 1 and 2 swimming program, Deadly Choices program and hearing and sight testing for all indigenous students, interhouse mathematics competition, choral festival participation, Year 3 Safety Circus talks, Years 4 – 6 STEAM afternoon, whole school reading for fun afternoon and weekly cross country training. Staff have also begun the following clubs; Lego
Club, Chess Club, Cartooning Club, Japanese Club and of course the Wakakirri performance team. That amounts to a very busy term. Well done everybody!

Anaphylaxis – EpiPen Recall
As has been discussed in the media, a worldwide recall is in place for four batches of EpiPen 300 microgram auto-injectors. This is due to the potential that these devices may contain a defective part that may result in the device failing to activate or requiring increased force to activate.
Parents please note that all EpiPens held at school have now been checked and parents contacted where necessary. Parents are reminded to check any EpiPens they may have at home to see if the recall applies. The affected batches are all with the expiry date of April 2017 and Batch numbers: 5FA665, 5FA6651, 5FA6652 and 5FA6653.
Rats of Tobruk Ceremony
On Wednesday 19th April our school participated in the first of the two annual Rats of Tobruk commemoration ceremonies. Our student leaders were responsible for running the entire ceremony. It was very pleasing to see the way the students took on this role with enthusiasm and can I say they did a fantastic job and were complimented by a number of invited dignitaries. Well done Alice, Max, Charli and Sierra.
ANZAC Day
On Monday 24th April we will conduct our annual ANZAC Day Commemoration at school starting at 10am. This commemoration will take place in the school hall. Parents are most welcome to come along and participate in this ceremony.
ANZAC Day, Tuesday 25th April
All Mackay North State School students and families are invited to participate and view the Mackay ANZAC Day service. Students and teachers will be marching from the old Coles carpark in Sydney Street through to the Cenotaph at the Mackay Entertainment Centre. Students are to gather at the old Coles carpark by 8.00am on Tuesday morning. Teachers and teacher aides will be there to supervise children during the march. Please wear full school uniforms including school hats.
After the march children can be collected from Nelson Street (beside Central State School) NOT from Alfred Street as in previous years.

100% Attendance for Term 1 At parade today we presented our 100% attendance certificates for term one. It was wonderful to be able to present 148 certificates to student who have been at school every day during term one. Students who have made the effort to have such great attendance are a credit to their families. Thank you to the parents and carers who have assisted their children to reach this goal. Please see this list below.

EASTER HOLIDAY BREAK
A !er an evenOul ending to Term 1, I trust that all of our families
and friends had a very happy and safe holiday break. I hope that
you endured no or lile damage from Cyclone Debbie and had the chance
to rest, relax and spend quality me together.
It was a pleasure to see students arriving for Term 2 happy and seling into learning from the
beginning of the school day. Thank you for ensuring your children were ready and prepared for
the start of what will be a very busy term.
LEARNING
T o enable your child to be the best they can be, it is important that they aend school for the
complete school day, unless of course if they are unwell.
Please ensure your child arrives at school to go into their classroom by 8:30am. This allows them 15
minutes to unpack, check equipment is ready for the day, catch up with friends and chat to their
teacher. All of this is important in allowing students to feel they are part of a class and have value. It sets
them up for a posive day and allows them to be ready for learning at 8:45am.
Θ Unpack your school bag
Θ Check your equipment is ready for the day
Θ Catch up with your friends
Θ Chat to your teacher
Students who arrive late feel disorientated and unsure. They require redirecon from the classroom teacher
and this interrupts the learning that is currently happening for other students. They have missed learning, it
takes them me to sele to learning and this is not giving them the best chance to learn and improve.
We all want the best for our children and a very simple way towards this is ensuring they are at school on me
for the whole day so that they can engage, learn and shine!
EQUIPMENT FROM HOME
D uring the last few weeks of Term 1 there were a few incidences
where sporng equipment from home was brought to school and it
was either lost, damaged or caused disagreements over who owned it
or who could play with it. To ensure this does not happen, we ask
that no toys or sports equipment are brought to school by
anyone. There is equipment at school that can be shared
during playme.

PERCEPTION OF EVENTS
O !en your child might come home and tell you a version of an
event that has happened during their day at school. They are
telling you about this event from their point of view, or their percepon
of the event.
Our brain constructs a representaon of reality through analysis and synthesis of
sensory informaon. Therefore, each person’s percepon of any given event will be
unique, which explains why people can have such differing memories of the same event.
Even if the same sensory informaon is available to two different people, the unique
history of each person’s brain will ensure that the final percepon of each individual will
differ, coloured by variaons in the individuals’ a"enon, memories, emoonal states, etc.
(The Handy Psychology Answer Book – L. Cohen)
We perceive things in different ways and we draw different conclusions from the same situaon.
This o!en leads to people feeling that their version of events is the ‘true’ version and other
versions are not the ‘truth’. In fact, there are many ‘truths’ depending on your involvement in the
event.
Please remember that your child’s percepon of events is just that, their version. If you are at all
concerned about what they are telling you the best course of acon is to listen, acknowledge their
concerns, then speak with the class teacher to clarify all percepons before you draw a conclusion about
‘right’ or ‘wrong’. Most mes it is worth considering things from more than one angle and this can help
build empathy in us and our children.

Therapeutic Foster Carers are needed in the Mackay region. These types of carers provide safe homes to children whose needs are higher and more complex than other children. They have often experienced significant trauma, grief and loss, and as a result will often have challenging behaviours. Some of these children can also have an intellectual or physical disability. Foster carers who provide this type of care are resili-ent, calm, patient, nurturing and have a good sense of humour.
We believe every child has the right to a loving and secure home and we provide additional supports, training and 24 hour on call to carers who take care of children with complex needs.
