Macarthur Advancement & Development Association Inc. Issue Nº 159 DECEMBER 2011
MACARTHUR NEWS
The next General Meeting of the Macarthur Advancement & Development Association Inc.
Wednesday 7th Dec at 8:00 pm at the Senior Citizens Clubrooms Macarthur
AN ELECTION PROMISE HONOURED
On November 25th Denis Napthine honoured a pre-
election promise made last year. In a press release he
announced that a full time ranger would be provided from
December 1st for Mount Eccles National Park.
Dr Napthine has been working with the Macarthur
community for several years to provide an on site ranger, a
policy that was abandoned shortly after Geoff Sharrock
retired as Head Ranger.
In his Media Release Dr Napthine said “Having a
dedicated ranger will improve facilities at the park, create a
more positive experience for visitors and bring more tourists
to the Mount Eccles National Park and the Macarthur/Lake
Condah district.”
Present for the media release was Gary Bellesini
who will be our first full time ranger in more than four
years. Gary will initially work out of the Portland office
pending the upgrade of the Mount Eccles office and the
Macarthur depot. He will also be responsible for Mount
Napier.
The announcement was received enthusiastically by
local Aboriginal Elder Auntie Laura, retired ranger Geoff
Sharrock and M.A.D.A. representatives present. The move
should also lead to a decrease in vandalism at the park.
Dr Napthine has worked very hard to deliver this
outcome for the Macarthur community and we thank him
for the time he has given and his persistence in following
this up.
Christmas Lights Competition
Unpack the decorations, check the
lights and get busy! Help to light up
the town and brighten the lives of
the kids of Macarthur, big and little.
There will be a prize for the best
Christmas decorations and the chil-
dren will have a chance to choose
their winner in the Children’s choice category.
Get busy, there isn’t much time left! Let’s
make Macarthur the Christmas capital of
Victoria.
With the largest wind farm in the Southern
Hemisphere on our doorstep and the Mount
Eccles National back at our back door we have
a wonderful opportunity to grow Macarthur
and ensure the future of our town by tapping
into the tourist trade that we hope will be gen-
erated by the wind farm.

Math’s is Fun Math’s Consultant Michael Ymer be-lieves Math’s can be fun for all children and he travels Australia, Asia and the U.S. spreading his message. Michael was in Macarthur in No-vember to conduct a Professional Development Day for 40 teachers from the region. Organized by Primary School Principal Lynn Lyles, the day was a resounding success.
It was followed by a session for parents in the evening where Michael explained why, how and what their children were being taught in Math’s classes. More than one parent left the session wishing it hadn’t ended quite so soon. Michael is an engaging and dynamic speaker and he encouraged the parents to forget the past and embrace the new methods of teaching the subject, to recognize that their children were not being taught in the way they had been.
The following day he went into the classrooms, one by one, and gave a practical demonstration to the teachers.
Michael has the gift of connecting with children and engaging the disengaged. One little boy commented that it was like magic.
After leaving Macarthur Michael spent a day in the classrooms at Hawkesdale P12 Col-lege.
Lynn Lyles is to be congratulated for taking the plunge and inviting Michael to the school. It was an initiative that was hugely suc-cessful and memorable for those involved.
Road Chaos
A truck carrying road base material caused traffic chaos when it went off the road on the Hawkesdale Road near the Penshurst Road intersec-tion on the 14th of November. It became bogged in soft soil and traffic soon backed up as other trucks arrived at the scene and were un-able to get through.
The police were soon on the scene however, directing traffic around the bogged vehicle until it could be towed back onto the road and traffic to the wind farm could begin to flow normally again.

Community
Street
Party
On Friday 16th December from 6.30pm the Macarthur community is invited to join staff from Leighton’s Contractors for a low key Christmas celebration to be held in Market Square. This will be in the form of a sausage sizzle. Santa will make an appearance and the children will be treated to free coach rides (gold coin donation for adults).
Leighton’s have generously agreed to fund the event and will provide the BBQ food and a can of beer or soft drink for everyone. Additional drinks can be brought from home or purchased from Mooney’s Café or the Macarthur Hotel.
Please bring a cake or slice to share. This will be our contribution to the meal. Please bring your own seats/rugs. The Christmas Lights Walk will follow at approximately 9pm.
The construction phase of the wind farm is now at the half way mark. Come and meet some of the men responsible for making it all happen and have a chat to them. Many of them are away from their families for long periods so please come and make them feel part of the Macarthur family.
For catering purposes we need to know how many of you are coming so please complete the enclosed slip and drop it in the box provided at the Post Office or return to Merilyn Cook, 37 High St by Monday 12th December.

CFA Open Day
The Macarthur CFA opened its doors as part of a Victoria wide Open Day aimed at showcasing the work of the CFA and giving the public an opportunity to visit their local brigade, inspect the vehicles and equipment and ask questions. Unfortunately there were not many visitors but that didn’t stop the members having a bit of fun and enjoying a meal together.

“WE MUST REMEMBER”
History came to life at Knebsworth on Sunday afternoon 16th
Octoer with the unveiling of a plaque in memory of World War
1 Soldiers and Free Settlers who were successful in obtaining
land in 1923 from the Knebsworth Estate.
Stories were related on each settler by various relatives and
individuals. George Habel from Hamilton, a son of Mr Alfred
Habel who obtained a block in the Knebsworth Estate unveiled
the plaque. Ninety three year old Jenny Black from Macarthur
was present as many years ago she milked cows on Jolly’s farm,
Jenny being a niece of Jolly’s who also obtained a block.
Mr Bill Malseed from Warrnambool who in 1988 was the Shire
of Minhamite President, spoke on soldier settlement as his fa-
ther Mr Bill Malseed (senior) acquired a settlers block at War-
rong. Present also was Moyne Shire Mayor Cr. Jim Doukas.
The rock with the plaque is situated in front of the Knebsworth
School sign on the Macarthur—Myamyn road.
Perhaps the only let down was the supposed to be helium gas
filled balloons failed to rise to a significant height when being
released in memory of each settler.
The day was most successful with over 80 in attendance. All
came to a close with a delicious afternoon tea served by the la-
dies at the Breakaway Knebsworth Hall, the hall being deco-
rated with yellow and green to represent an Australian theme.

Source for Accurate Weather To tell the weather, go to your back door and look for the dog. If the dog is
at the door and he is wet, it's probably raining. But if the dog is standing there really soaking wet, it is proba-
bly raining really hard. If the dog's fur looks like it's been rubbed the wrong way, it's probably windy.
If the dog has snow on his back, it's probably snowing. Of course, to be able to tell the weather like this, you
have to leave the dog outside all the time, especially if you expect bad weather.
Sincerely, The CAT

Macarthur Bowling Club Ladies
Competition On their way to a good win over Casterton, the Macarthur A grade team were momentarily stopped in their tracks when a blade, on its’ way to the wind farm, passed by and caused a buzz of excitement as the bowlers stopped to watch, overwhelmed by its’ sheer size.
Over the moon when they won, the ladies insisted that a photo be taken so they had evidence of the final score. It was a good match for all players and the Macarthur bowlers were looking forward to their final match against Hamilton which they subsequently won as well. This placed them 4th and into the semi-finals.
A CHRISTMAS VERSE
I have a list of folks I know, all written in a book,
And every year at Christmas time I go and take a
look.
For that is when I realise that these names are
now a part,
Not of the book they’re written in, but of my
very heart.
For each name stands for someone who has
crossed my path some time
And in that meeting they’ve become the Rhythm
of the Rhyme.
And while it sounds fantastic for me to make
this claim,
I really feel I am composed of each remembered
name.
Even if you may not be aware of any special link.
Just meeting you has shaped my life far more
than you may think.
So never think my Christmas greeting is just a
mere routine
Of names upon a Christmas list forgotten in
between.
For when I send a Christmas card that is
addressed to you
It’s because you’re on that list of folks I am
indebted to.
And every year when Christmas comes I realise
anew.
The best of gifts that life can give is having
friends like you.
So may the Spirit of Christmas that for ever and
ever endures
Leave its richest blessings in all the hearts of You
and Yours

Old Time Good Times
The hard work the Duyvestyn family put into their Old Time Wood Days weekend was rewarded with perfect weather and a bumper crowd. With a large band of cheerful volunteers to help, the sound of the saws and the lathe filled the air as fasci-nated groups of spectators watched the action.
The working horses are always a highlight of the week-end as they drag in the logs to be sawn, but this year they were outdone when Andrew put 26 year old Kate, his favourite horse, on a treadmill, providing the power to run a saw.
An enormous amount of work goes into these weekends and the Duyvestyn family is to be congratulated for their com-mitment to their cause – raising funds for the Cancer In Kids Association. It is not just one weekend a year, the fundraising goes on all year and the weekend in November is the culmina-tion of a year’s work. Although the final figures are not yet in, this year they expect to be forwarding a cheque for around $22,000. Congratulations Andrew, Christine and their family and friends on a huge effort! Well done!

No Mac News in January
A decision has been made to not issue a January edition of the Macarthur News. In past years it has been necessary to put the January edition together and have it printed about a week be-fore Christmas. Compiling the January so soon after the De-cember paper is issued puts a lot of pressure on the volunteers involved and sometimes there is not a lot of news to include so this year we voted ourselves a holiday.

Breaking In
A man went to the Police Station wishing to speak with the
burglar who had broken into his house the night before.
"You'll get your chance in court," said the Desk Sergeant.
"No, no, no!" said the man. "I want to know how he got into the
house without waking my wife. I've been trying to do that for
years!"

Lions Club Community Tea
The Community Tea this year was the culmination of a memorable day for Macarthur, Prince Frederik
popped in to the wind farm and Denis Napthine made his announcement, so everyone was in a jovial mood
when they gathered for the tea.
As usual they were well fed and when everyone had had plenty to eat the guest speaker was introduced.
Tony McDonald, Leighton’s man responsible for constructing the wind farm, was given a warm Macarthur
welcome. Tony showed a short DVD to give an overview of the diversity of Leighton’s interests, which are
many.
Tony then presented an overview of the wind farm, its’ size, capacity and the present stage the construc-
tion was at, with photos of the site and several towers currently being constructed. His address was well re-
ceived and solid support for the project was shown by those present.
The raffles and spinning wheel followed with lots of goodies being taken home. As if there hadn’t been
enough food consumed, the evening ended with a delicious supper and hopefully the Lions made a good profit
to help fund the many community projects they support.

Macarthur Wind Farm
Work at the Macarthur Wind Farm has entered a new phase as the first of the towers are erected.
The blades, hubs and nacelles began to arrive last month those who have seen them pass through town have
been impressed by their sheer size.
Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark made a flying visit to the site on Friday November 25th. Danish
company Vestas is responsible for the supply of the hubs, nacelles and blades which are being shipped to
Portland from Denmark.
Eight lucky children from the Macarthur Primary School and Eight from Hawkesdale P12, were given
an opportunity to meet the Prince and present him with flowers and a Tahlia Purcell original drawing.
It was a relaxed visit according to John Bragg, MADA President and Macarthur representative on the
Community Engagement Committee, and once the formalities were concluded Prince Frederik spent time
talking to all the children.
Leighton’s have indicated that there will be a lessening of the number of truck movements by Christ-
mas as some of the rock dug from the foundations will be able to be used on site reducing their reliance on
rock from outside the area.
