PNPHC Minutes July 13, 2013

Minutes from last meeting approved as posted in the newsletter.

A card to the club was shared from Marion Belcher on behalf of her and Bob as a thank you for support.

Lola Whitford shared the Treasure report on behalf of Stacy Johnson.

Sheila Shared updates for the planned BBQ and asked that all take a moment at the end of the meeting to share a personal fact for one of the games. Info was sent to Laura for the web site with directions per Lola. The meat had been ordered and additional discussion about to marinate or not. Opted to not. BBQ is still going to be an open event for anyone who wants to potluck and show up.

Breed Show discussion on format and location is still ongoing. 4 or 6 judges. Looking at “fun classes” that have a draw. Still considering the weekend of a show if we move venues and good idea to look at the pinto schedule and graduations as well as weather.

High point fundraising, discussion that this division used to be self-sufficient and even with lower numbers there could be more done to create a bigger draw to the program.

NWCC, Tracy will be doing a desert table and is looking for sponsorship for the table at zone. Not enough board at the meeting to pass but recommended an email chain to final. Board that was at the meeting approved. Tracy to follow up and get with Stacy following.

Discussion revisited on open show, need to consider an open event to help with our gold star goals. Would need fundraising. Maybe an idea to sponsor an event. Or maybe to consider an open/combo show with 1 or two judges, smaller venue.

Considering bringing back the meeting drawing to encourage folks to come beyond the minimum.

Stallion Preview, so far we have one entry for the show. Discussion held on some modifications to consider for the future of the program. Expansion on the idea of a roll over for a one stallion/foal if there was no get eligible on a paid year. Challenge to the extra work required in managing roll over/cost. Tabled.

Promotion recommendation to consider the Horse and Draft Extravaganza to be held in October at Lynden. It has been a few years since we have done a hosted booth at an event. More info to come.

Was exciting to see Washington youth at the AJPHA world show and props and feedback was shared on our Facebook page for those who had the opportunity to tune in. Great Job by all. Hopefully we can get direct feedback on final results when they are back home.

Next meeting July 28th will be the BBQ. There will not be an August Meeting. Additional email to go out to the club for the BBQ flyer and invite.

Meeting Adjourned. Minutes recorded by Angela Kilcup..

A short meeting was held at the BBQ on July 28th. Ideas for the 2014 show were discussed.

APHA Past-President Guy Walker Passed Away This Month

6

Guy Morrison Walker passed away August 1, 2013 at his home in Ocean Springs, Mississippi. He was born

on January 29, 1924. Guy was on the Executive Committee for 8 years and served as president in 1991. He

raised paint horses for many years in Laurel, and was a lifetime member of the American Paint Horse

Association.

Doors opened for new disciplines, new horses and new exhibitors at upcoming 2013 APHA Open/Amateur World

Championship Show

Green classes, barrel racing sweepstakes, USTRC roping, and increased payouts

FORT WORTH—Preparations are underway for the American Paint Horse Association’s (APHA) 2013 Open/Amateur

World Championship Show. The second of two premier events hosted by the association annually, the

Open/Amateur World Show is slated to take place November 6-17 at Will Rogers Memorial Center in Fort Worth.

Doors have been opened for new disciplines, new horses and new exhibitors. New disciplines introduced to the

World Show class list take several forms. A Ranch Horse Pleasure Sweepstakes with $1,000 added offers followers of

this popular new discipline an opportunity to shine on the World stage. The sweepstakes format means qualifying is

not required for participation.

Sweepstakes classes pairing 2-year-old performance horses with non-professional riders make their debut in 2013.

The Non-Pro 2-Year-Old Western Pleasure Sweepstakes and Non-Pro 2-Year-Old Hunter Under Saddle Sweepstakes

are non-qualifying events that offer $1,000 added money in each discipline.

Additionally, APHA is stepping up its game for barrel racers and team ropers. The new incentive program for barrel

racers, Paint Barrel Racing Incentive Program (PBRIP), has received a strongly positive reception at barrel events

across the country. Donors and supporters have already put together $5,000 in added money to be split between

two PBRIP sweepstakes classes at the World Show. A minimum of $2,500 will be distributed in each of two PBRIP

Sweepstakes classes—one for Regular Registry horses and the other for Solid Paint-Breds.

Team ropers on all breeds of horses are encouraged to enter the new USTRC Cowtown ShootOut event, which will be

held in conjunction with the APHA World Show. Dates for the roping are set for November 15-17 in Will Rogers

Coliseum. Produced by USTRC, this roping will be included as one of the USTRC’s 2014 80+ fully sanctioned qualifier

ropings. A $5,000 cash bonus for Paint Horses has been set aside and will be offered in addition to the regular USTRC

payout and prize line. If the rider of a registered Paint Horse has a TRIAD Classification number of six (#6) or greater,

and is high money winner with that classification, the owner of the horse will earn a $2,500 cash bonus. The same

$2,500 incentive bonus will be awarded to the owner of the registered paint horse whose rider was the high money

winner classified as an Elite #5 and below. The owners must be APHA members to receive the bonus.

Added money for the World Championship Ranch Sorting Sweepstakes classes at the APHA World Show increased for

2013. Thanks to a sponsorship by Ranch Sorting National Championships, both the Open Ranch Sorting and Amateur

Ranch Sorting classes will offer $2,500 payout in their mixed World Championship/Sweepstakes format.

7

By the numbers, the 2013 APHA World Show has something for everyone—with 240 total classes. And while the

majority of 168 World Championship classes require qualification in order to participate, 109 do not require

qualification. Among them, all Challenge and Sweepstakes classes, all classes for weanling and yearling horses, and

classes for 2 and 3-year-old performance horses, plus the entire set of Breeders’ Futurity classes. Additionally, the

four new Green classes (Green Western Pleasure, Green Hunter Under Saddle, Green Trail and Green Western

Riding), the PBRIP Barrel Racing Sweepstakes classes, and the new Ranch Horse Pleasure Sweepstakes are non-

qualifying as well.

Additional activities – Boot Camp, Ride the Pattern, Gift Show, Sale, Clinics

Besides the classes in the arena, APHA has added other activities for exhibitors and spectators to get more

enjoyment out of their time at the World Show. The pre-show Amateur Boot Camp will offer a full day’s worth of

honing skills and polish for Amateur and Novice Amateur exhibitors who are interested in getting help from industry

professionals. Held on November 5, Boot Camp will be followed immediately by APHA’s “Ride the Pattern” seminar.

Ride the Pattern is a free opportunity for all exhibitors to hear from a World Show judge what the judges will be

watching for—while the patterns are being demonstrated live.

The Farnam Breeders’ Trust Sale festivities kick off November 9 with the Sale Preview Party. The following day,

November 10, the Farnam Breeders’ Trust Sale Preview will begin at 5:30 pm and the Sale will begin at 6:30 pm. Two

sessions will be held: the first for Breeders’ Trust horses of any age, or those in foal to a Breeders’ Trust stallion; the

second for yearlings whose owners are making them eligible to compete in the 2014 Farnam Sale Stakes classes (with

anticipated payout exceeding $50,000).

Two free clinics are scheduled, which are open to World Show attendees and the community at large. On November

9, horse trainer and Chrome columnist Kalley Krickeburg will demonstrate her “pre-saddle training” methods in the

Watt Arena. On November 10, dog trainer and Chrome columnist Hilton Butler will share techniques he uses

successfully in his work.

8

Shoppers will find a wide array of treasures and holiday gift items in the Colors of the Season Gift Show. Now with an

expanded venue, the gift show will be open daily during the World Show from 9 am to 6 pm, with extended hours the

weekend of November 8-11. Interested vendors may contact Shannon Rogers at 817-222-6433.

Entries are accepted until 5 p.m. the day prior to the class.

American Horse Council Recreational Trail Program!

The American Horse Council is urging all recreational riders to call their senators today. A new amendment

to a national transportation bill will strip all funding from the recreational trail program. Sen. Rand Paul (R-

KY) has introduced an amendment to the Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and Related

Agencies Appropriations Act that would strip all funding from the recreational trail program.

The American Horse Council is urging all recreational riders to call their senators and ask them to vote no on

Senate Amendment 1742 to the 2014 transportation appropriations bill.

The Paul amendment would transfer all funding from the Transportation Alternatives Program to pay for

bridge repairs. RTP is part of the Transportation Alternatives Program and would lose all funding in fiscal

year 2014 if the amendment passes.

Since its inception, RTP has provided money for thousands of state and local trail projects across the

country, including many that benefit equestrians. RTP provides funding directly to states for recreational

trails and trail-related facilities for all recreational trail users. It is funded with a portion of the gas taxes paid

into the Highway Trust Fund by recreational off-highway vehicle users.

Trail users are encouraged to contact their local senators by calling the Congressional switchboard at (202)

225-3121. For more information, contact the American Horse Council.

Royal Quick Flash gallops past $5 million mark in offspring earnings

Less than a year after reaching the $4 million mark in offspring earnings, Royal Quick Flash distanced himself to become the first APHA stallion to reach the $5 million milestone, thanks to a bevy of top running get.

A second-place finish by DSP Annies Flash in the G1 Spots N Dots Handicap July 27 at Fair Meadows Racetrack in Tulsa, Oklahoma—combined with money-earning finishes by several other get in overnight races—helped push “Flash” over the $5 million

9

mark, says owner Larry Steele of Steele Farms in Fort Gibson, Oklahoma. He’s elated at the success Flash’s get have had on the track.

“When you’re running a stallion operation, this is just what it’s all about. It’s what you live for, so we’re just elated,” Larry said. “His colts have been running at over $600,000 a year for the last few years, so I could see it was going to happen about mid-season if we had the luck. I knew we had a lot of good colts out there out of good mares, so we were hoping for the best from them.”

A 1996 sorrel overo stallion by Royal Quick Dash (QH) and out of Venice Song (QH), Flash is no stranger to success. Named the 1998 World Champion Running Paint Horse, he also earned multiple year-end titles as a racehorse: Champion 2-Year-Old and Champion 2-Year-Old Colt in 1998, and Champion 3-Year-Old and Champion 3-Year-Old Colt in 1999. The stakes winner’s lifetime earnings tallied $53,877.

But Flash didn’t rest on his laurels—instead, he left an even bigger impression as a sire of speed-bred Paint Horses. The sire of 387 registered Paints to date, more than two-thirds of his foals have hit the racetrack. Collectively, they’ve earned $5,001,924 in purse money, cementing their sire as the breed’s No. 1 Lifetime Leading Sire of Money-Earning Paint Racehorses.

Giving credence to Flash’s sire power, three of the top four leading money-earning racehorses of 2013 (as of July 29, 2013) are by Flash: Situation, a 2-year-old gelding owned by Wade Leggett who has earned $96,871 for No. 1; Imflashinthechicks, a 2-year-old gelding owned by Shirley Wheeler who has earned $86,134 for the No. 2 spot; and Flashthechicks, a 4-year-old gelding and two-time World Champion Running Solid Paint-Bred also owned by Shirley who has earned $38,144 this year for fourth place. Flashthechicks is also No. 2 on the Lifetime Leading Money-Earners chart with total earnings of $311,683.

APHA Workshop, May 31-June 1, 2013

Milestones

Last APHA Workshop as we go to one annual meeting, Convention in February.

Last year of a three year term I am serving on the APHF Scholarship Evaluation Committee.

10th year I am serving as a Washington State Director/Alternate.

First time serving as a Committee Chairperson.

Report from Executive Director Billy Smith: “I’m All In!”

The changes we will experience in our one meeting format may be clumsy at first, but we will become

more efficient and find other ways to connect and meet more frequently using other platforms. Upcoming

Conventions will include opportunities for Show Managers, Directors, and Members for leadership training,

learning, and boosting effectiveness.

APHA has the most people on staff that personally participate in the horse industry. APHA staff “get it.”

They understand wants and needs of horse enthusiasts. To the uninitiated, APHA is a well kept secret that

when found out, is a breath of fresh air. So, how do we get the secret out? We need to discover new

opportunities that will also help restore the financial underpinnings of the Association. A lifetime member

exclusive product line will be added to the General Store. Check out the Xtras: Member benefits that give

real value. If we don’t use them and our sponsors, they will go away. These business contributions are a

critical piece of our financial strength. Be a rumor killer, not a rumor creator/repeater (Contrary to what may

be going around, AQHA is NOT buying APHA).

Join Billy in taking responsibility to generate ideas and have constructive conversations, that may lead to

positive changes. 2012 saw an additional 59 approved events, 2% increase in Youth membership, faster

10

registration and re-engineering of many processes, with 1/2 the staff. The new Member Care Representatives

handle transactions from start to finish, ending with a congratulatory note. 2012 also saw the loss of an

equivalent to an entire foal crop: unregistered speed, cattle, reining, and roping Paints. Should our rules and

processes change to reclaim them? As we consider rule changes, consider the intended AND unintended

consequences of our decisions. Can we focus on making the tent of the Association bigger and wider?

Include unregistered Paints with some kind of License to Participate? Let’s make it so when our secret is

discovered and they “see” us, they decide to stay. Let them see us as hospitable and harmonious.

Now a 3-prong focus: Revenue, Productivity, Member Retention. The economy didn’t cause our

weaknesses, it only exposed them. 2014 will see Chrome, the new APHA published lifestyle magazine,

upgraded technologies, improved communications, audits of programs to ensure they are more revenue-

centric, and a balanced budget (APHA has not had one since 1998).

Topics of the EC, Chairpersons, and Vice Chairpersons Meeting to take to each Committee for

Discussion:

1. Consider the World Show Qualifying time frame and process for Youth, and for Open/Amateur

separately. Are modifications needed? What are the challenges real competitors face?

2. Consider if Green Horse classes should be added to the World Show.

3. How do we reward the behavior we want, not punish what we don’t. Make the tent bigger.

4. We need the trainers, they are the foundation of Horse Show entries.

5. Breeder’s Trust Program: Are points and distribution of funds equitable?

6. License to Participate: How might this work? What are the issues?

Recreational Riding

1. Club Rides: Send information to APHA for including on the website, in Constant Contact e-blasts.

Retroactively the rides can be charter requirements if 20+ riders attended, let APHA know.

2. Back Country Horsemen: Recommending a partnership and recognition for Ride America enrollees for

volunteer hours maintaining trails and for campouts.

3. All Around Trail Horse: Is there a way to do this by nomination, People’s Choice, by credits earned, by

activities? Need ideas how and where this could be awarded.

4. How could Ride America include a category for Paints with a License to Participate?

5. Donation of $10,000: A donor left the use up to the Committee. Ideas include a Recreational Riding

website as the go to place for all things trail and leisure riding across the country including overnight

stabling, public trails.

6. American Horse Council: APHA will send 3 participants to the national convention.

7. Ranch Horse Pleasure Class: Committee recommends passing the proposed rule change out of

committee for voting at the February 2014 Convention.

8. Gist Regional Club Affiliate Program: Gist Silversmiths developed an awards reward program for

Regional Clubs. Clubs should look at giving these quality products because of the rewards program they get

the best value. Find out more from this flyer: http://clubs.apha.com/docs/default-source/sponsor-

documents/gistapha_affiliaterewards_52013.pdf?sfvrsn=2

Regional Club:

11

1. We reviewed Convention minutes and action items and their outcomes since Convention.

2. We reviewed the history of the Committee,, disbanding in 2004, it’s reformation and revised purpose,

and the seven significant accomplishments since it was re-established in 2010.

3. We reviewed and discussed each topic handed down from the EC. Consensus was to eliminate Youth

WS qualifying, add Green Horse classes to the WS, create a Task Force to study consequences and impacts

of the idea of License to Participate.

4. Topics were interrelated so the discussion was not specific to one. These topics lead to more detailed

discussion: Regional Club Conduct; Financial Health of Clubs, Club 5 year Reviews.

a. State requirements for incorporation and club best practices

b. Key indicators of club health besides finances

c. 5 Year Review checklist

d. Scoring clubs based on key data points

e. Options to help low functioning clubs and to respond to non-functioning clubs

f. Financial responsibilities of clubs by Federal and State requirements and best practices

The results of the discussion laid out plans for volunteers to attend teleconferences to look at the 5 Year

Review checklist and process, to consider what key information is collected, should be collected for analysis,

how often to reviewed (if 5 years is perhaps too infrequent) and what the process will be if the club is non-

functioning or elements required for their charter are not complete. They will take into consideration best

practices for organizations.

Board of Directors Meeting

1. The EC Nominating Committee recommended Mike Short for 6th Committee member.

2. A Rules Task Force was formed to review the Rule book for opportunities to include rather than exclude

horses and members.

3. The presentation of the Annual Report 2012 was given (available on the APHA website).

4. An Emergency Action was approved to allow Green Horse Classes at the 2013 World Show.

5. An Emergency Action was NOT approved to waive Youth World Show qualifying for 2013
