Spotting vehicles of all types lying abandoned in street corners and elevated platforms in the neighbourhoods of Mogappair and Anna Nagar is still not un-common despite the Greater Chennai Police and the Greater Chennai Corporation taking ef-forts to remove them.
On several occasion in the past Mogappair Mail had highlighted in its columns as to how vehicles ranging from cars to auto rick-shaws to two-wheelers to heavy vehicles are lying abandoned in different parts of the neighbour-hood. In one instance, a report brought to light that three cars that were parked on a vacant plot near College Road turning off Kavimani Salai in Mogappair
West were in fact fenced off by the property owner. The vehicles were moved much later and the owner of the plot has since launched construction of a build-ing on the site.
However, residents say that the problem of abandoned vehicles has not been sorted out even now and they continue to come across such vehicles in many places, es-pecially eating into the available road space.
“Only last month we came across reports in the media that the Greater Chennai Corporation had actually seized 7,875 vehicles that were abandoned by its own-ers in different parts of the met-ropolitan city. The reports said that the civic agency had auc-tioned these vehicles and raised a whopping Rs 2.14 crore from this

Velammal West, finished runners up at the inter school volleyball tournament conducted by Sri Venkateswara Matric HSS recently.
Ten-year-old Sharon Rachel of Spartan Exclusive School, Mogappair, a physically challenged chess champion was given the young achiever award by Chennai-based AL4S Charitable Trust at Kamaraj Hall Teynampet recently. She is not only good in chess but also makes her mark on the musical keyboard.
exercise. I hoped that after this incident, the owners would be more conscious and think twice before park-ing their vehicles at public places and vanish for months. But the problem is that even now one can find many such vehicles in our neighbourhood,” said Sree-mathi Harinarayan, a resi-dent of Anna Nagar point-ing to an auto rickshaw parked in a road turning at the entry point of Fourth Avenue Road.
Residents felt that the
Greater Chennai Corpora-tion has focused only on removing vehicles parked at designated parking lots in key junctions and on arte-rial roads and not turned its attention to similar problem that persists in the interior roads of neighbourhoods. Since such vehicles some-times turn into dens for anti-socials to consume li-quor as well as mosquito breeding stations, residents want the civic agency to get proactive in seizing such vehicles and auction them.
Cash, gift hampersas Pongal freebies
The Tamil Nadu government will disburse Rs 1,000 and a hamper con-taining one kg of rice, jaggery and other ingredients used for making sweet Pongal and a piece of sugar-cane as Pongal gift to each of the 1.67 crore ration cardholders from Janu-ary 9 to 12.
The government has deposited Rs 1,677 crore as first instalment to dis-tribute the cash along with the gift hampers comprising rice, jaggery, gift. The left-out cardholders out of the total 1.86 crore would receive the Pongal gift on Jan 13.

This car shown above is left abandoned on the 40 ft road bifurcating Mohanram Nagar and VGP Nagar in Mogappair. People who pass by urinate behind the car and many more dump garbage. Day in and day out the stench is unbearable. Will not the authorities concerned take action to remove the vehicle.
From Antarctica to Anna Nagar: The STory oF A SToNe
By N Rathi Chithra
Stones that were buried under ice for an estimated 50 million years in Antarc-tica have been lying outside a house in our very own Anna Nagar since 1989, which not many are aware of. These stones that were brought from thousands of miles away from the cold-est region on earth, are now placed outside the house of Colonel P Gane-san, a retired Army officer, who was a member of In-dia’s seventh Antarctic Expedition. The house is located in H Block on 17th Main Road.
Colonel Ganesan had worked at Dakshingan-gotri, the Indian Research Station in Antarctica dur-ing 1987-88 along with 14 others. “I quit my job with the Public Works Depart-ment and got commis-sioned in the Indian Army in May 1964. I got selected for the Antarctic Research Station posting. We had left Goa on November 26, 1987 and reached Antarc-tica on December 21, 1987,” Colonel Ganesan
reminisced.Upon his return, he de-
cided to bring a few boul-ders from Antarctica weighting about 800 kg to a tonne to India. “Eventu-ally, these boulders were installed in five places in the country,” said the re-tired Colonel, who has also penned a short book ‘Story of a Stone’ on the subject.
Colonel Ganesan en-gaged a sculptor to carve out a half globe shaped stone from the boulder. “I got the Antarctica map engraved on it and pre-sented it to the Military Engineering Group (MEG) in Bengaluru where it has been installed at the mu-seum. The sculptor also carved out a spherical
shape in which the conti-nents were engraved. This is now in the drawing room of my house,” he said. Another part of the stone has been kept at an ashram of Vedadri Maharishi in Tiruvaru and the fourth stone can be spotted at an ‘Inspiration Park’ he built in his native Sannanallur village on the Mayiladuth-urai-Tiruvarur road. “The fifth stone is what you find outside my Anna Nagar house, which is named ‘The Poles’. It has been installed on a pedestal,” he says proudly.
This is one of the little known facts about the stones from Antarctica that are now in Anna Nagar.
Register if one needs to feed stray dogs
The city corporation has urged dog lovers, animal welfare activists and NGOs and anyone involved in feeding commu-nity dogs to register with it, saying it had received several complaints from resi-dents’ associations about the activity in-
conveniencing others.Corporation officials said some resi-
dents had complained of the area where community dogs are fed being littered. “They (animal lovers) are well within their rights to feed these community dogs. We are seeking this information only to add to our database so that we can work together with them in ensuring the welfare of the community animals said city vet-erinary officer, Chennai corporation

Corporation gets cranes to
cut treesThe Greater Chennai
Corporation has started using six hydraulic cranes to speed up prun-ing of trees whose branches pose a risk to pedestrians and motor-ists across the city.
Residents can call the helpline 1913 or send emails or even letters to it to register any com-plaints. Complaints can also be sent to the zonal off icers by cal l ing 9445190201; the last two digits will be 01 to 15 depending on the zone.
Parking space at Central
It has been nearly a year since the city’s larg-est underground inter-change metro station at Central opened for ser-vice, but commuters are still struggling to find space to park their ve-hicles as the planned parking lot is yet to be opened. There will soon be some relief, as an underground parking space is expected to open by mid-January. The lot will be able to hold 100 cars and 300 two-wheelers at a time.

The manhole cover of a storm water drain at Trinity Church Street, Golden George Nagar, Mogappair East is badly damaged posing danger to pedestrians and motorists. It’s high time the officials concerned take remedial measures before any un-toward incident happens.

Residents of Mogappair East are finally heaving a sigh of relief over the be-ginning of the process of relaying of roads in key neighbourhood streets after many months of them be-ing in shambles.
Multiple utility agencies such as the Greater Chen-nai Corporation and the Chennai Metropolitan Wa-ter Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB or Me-trowater in common par-lance) had dug up road such as Ori Salai, Electric-ity Board Road and the Justice Rathnavel Pandian Road in the past over a
year. Consequently, the roads remained in a bat-tered state making it diffi-cult for residents to move around in their cars and motorcycles. Even visitors to the neighbourhood found it difficult to negoti-ate on the bumpy roads.
However, over the past month, the contractors engaged by the Greater Chennai Corporation have laid new roads in Ori Salai and Justice Rathnavel Pan-dian Road much to the comfort of the local resi-dents. “The tale of Ori Salai was something that would stand out. While the entire road was dug up in parts by contractors of util-
ity agencies, in May last year, the contractor had laid the road for half the stretch – from the begin-ning of Ori Salai near Pari Salai to EB Road Junction. The remaining stretch re-mained largely umotorable as some works undertaken by the Metrowater were incomplete and were drag-ging for months. Finally the works were completed and the remaining half of the road was also laid,” said Nandagopal, a local
resident.What the new road has
done is to have enabled the local residents to seam-lessly connect to Nerkun-dram via the Golden George Bridge (on two-wheelers alone – those travelling by car have to go via the New Maduravoyal Bridge), which has helped cut travel time significantly for those headed to that part of the town.
Likewise, the process of laying of the EB Road has
begun. Recently the road was paved. Residents now hope that the work would be completed early so that they can have better access to the Church Road, which connects them to the New Maduravoyal Bridge and on to the Koyambedu-
Poonamallee highway.Residents now just have
one prayer on their lips. And that is once the fresh-ly laid roads are ready they should be maintained properly and not dug up again at the whim and fancy of some civic agency.
Finally laying of new roads begins in Mogappair East
Thanks to the encouraging response from the social media, V1 Murder Case, which had a modest opening, has picked up steam after the first three days. Happy for more reasons than one is the lead actor Ram Arun Cas-tro, not for just himself but to the energetic young team marshalled by debutant director Pavel Nava-geethan.
With a boxer-like frame (the actor already on his second movie, a periodical one dating 150 years back), Ram said his happiness is the fruit of a decade old hard work, which began in Abu Dhabi. ̀ `While pursuing my engineering degree in Gulf, I was lucky to find an opening in New York School of Acting which opened a branch in the Emirates. The two-year stint was worth its weight in gold, in main due to the interaction with the celebrity
filmmakers from all over the Globe. Being the only Indian student, acclaimed filmmaker Mira Nair gave quality time to me. She homed in a pertinent point that I would have got lost in Hollywood movies. Her words of wisdom to get back to my roots in Chennai and scout for openings had paid handsomely.”
For Ram, the struggle began when he hunted the film compa-nies which were setting the plat-form for aspirants like him. ``Imagine the damage in the mind when each production unit had their ways of rubbing it on an aspirant. The positive side was in finding the openings as an also ran extra in big star cast movies. That went a long way to get to know the intricacies of movie making.”
Rewinding that phase, Ram said he was about to pack his
bags to the Gulf when an irresist-ible job opening came his way when the magical moment ar-rived. ̀ `My good friend C S Prem Kumar, editor of the movie V1 Murder Case, had suggested my name to director Pavel, who was scouting for an energetic new face to play the main lead. Once I got through the audition, a
whole load of uneasiness got lifted from my back. An actor himself, Pavel understood the desired space which a fresher could do and the best part was his openness for improvisations. In the lengthy climax of six min-utes, weightage was given to the dialogues where the body lan-guage of the two actors were pronounced.”
How difficult was to essay a forensic officer character where
the brain had to be razor quick to unsettle the suspected ones in a murder case? ``Playing a Nycto phobia which fears the darkness, the character Agni called for a dashing approach in outwitting the opponent in the mind game. There was the huge support of Vishnu Priya, a proven name in Malayalam, which helped the overall gloss to the end product.”
Part of the Indian School of Drama, Ram loses no time to acknowledge the valuable inputs and the lessons from the world of theatre. ``Movie is a different experience and now that a start is made, looking forward to the challenges ahead. These are early days but I would be happy to explore different genre with no two movies on the same lines.”
On the untitled periodic film with a set of newcomers, Ram said the protocol and prerogative merits the announcement from the production house next week.
