Director’s message The Tata Institute of Social Sciences, now in its 83rd
year, continues to impact social policies, programmes
and ground level action for the betterment of society.
As a community-engaged University with campuses in
Mumbai, Tuljapur, Guwahati and Hyderabad, the
Institute's vision is to create socially relevant
knowledge and transfer that knowledge through its
various teaching programmes and field action projects.
With over eight decades of experience, the Institute
creates highly knowledgeable and skilled human
service professionals and empowers them to find
sustainable solutions to people's problems, social issues and social transformation.
The Master of Arts in Education (Elementary) programme aims to enhance knowledge,
capacities and orientations that are relevant to strengthening elementary education in
the country. Students completing this programme develop a critical and reflective
understanding of the core and foundational areas of education, including theory and
research, with special reference to India. The programme is designed to include
thematic, issue-based courses that are of current significance in the Indian context.
Students also develop special expertise in chosen areas of study relating more directly
to professional needs: for example, curriculum, pedagogy, teacher development,
material development, education of children with special needs, leadership and
management issues, gender issues in education, etc.
This programme has two distinctive features: It is conducted in dual mode, involving 4
weeks of contact classes and 12 weeks of distance learning in Semesters I and III and
31/2 weeks of contact classes and 12½ weeks of distance learning in Semesters II and
IV. This model has been chosen as a way of facilitating participants to combine work
with study. The contact classes are held at the Mumbai campus of TISS.
Placement Brochure 2017-2019
Teaching–learning during the rest of the semester is carried out based on planned
weekly/fortnightly reading, study and regular assignments to be shared with faculty
and other peers, primarily through the Internet using a learning management system.
The M.A. programme was collaboratively conceived by TISS, Homi Bhabha Centre for
Science Education, Mumbai, Vidya Bhawan Society, Udaipur, Digantar, Jaipur,
Eklavya, Bhopal and National Institute of Advanced Studies, Bangalore. These
organisations have contributed significantly to research and innovative practices in
the field of elementary education. This gets reflected in the vibrant curriculum of the
programme. Professionals from these organisations and other experts in the field
contribute to teaching in the programme.
It gives me immense pleasure and pride to present the 2017−2019 batch of M.A.
Elementary Education students of TISS Mumbai through this Placement Brochure. I
invite you to visit our campus, interact with our committed and sensitive students and
discover their innovative ideas, commitment and enthusiasm in contributing and
responding to social challenges. I am certain that our students will contribute
immensely to your esteemed organisation, and become assets to you.

Alumni’s message: Ankit saraf Phd scholar at IIM Ahmedabad
“ The M.A. Education (Elementary) programme at TISS completely changed my perspective with respect to school education. I came out of the programme as a more observant and reflective person, with increased compassion and sensitivity towards contemporary issues in education. The efforts made to integrate theory with experiences of the cohort in the form of elaborate classroom discussions during the contact period was the highlight of the programme. I always remember my experience at TISS with fondness and gratitude.”
Saurabh Khanna Doctoral Student,Educational Policy

“ I came into the MA in Education (Elementary) program with a desire to attain a sound theoretical framework to help organize my limited experiential knowledge of working in education. In retrospect, the MAEE program did much more than just that. It has deeply influenced and informed my views regarding education in the context of developing nations. The program was especially helpful as it created a space for working professionals in education to come together at regular intervals and brainstorm solutions to educational challenges facing the nation.”

Richa Goswami Project coordinator, Project Quest, PHD scholar in TISS “The MA Education program that I pursued from 2006 to 2008 not only helped me in engaging with the sociological, philosophical and development aspect of education but also exposed me to the various professional opportunities available in the sector. The format of the course allowed for various working people to continue their studies and this made for an interesting batch where fresh graduates like me got the opportunity to interact with very senior faculty members and peers. I also started work while pursuing my education thus leading to reflection on practice and engagement with theory.”
Kishore Darak Lead, Teacher Education
Tata trust
“ The MAEE course of TISS is grounded in strong theoretical understanding of school education in India and is strongly informed by practice of schooling. As an alumnus from the very first batch, I can certainly say that the course helped me develop a comprehensive view of the sector with special emphasis on education of various marginal groups. I think generations of students graduating from the course will serve society for attaining goals of equitable quality education. “
Pooja Gajbhiye Working at Niti March Rank 97 Project
