  • What is it?This is a Master’s in EducationalResearch and Practice that has beendesigned to support critical andrigorous professional developmentfor those who have recentlyqualified to teach and are at thestart of their career.

    Who is this programme aimed at?It has been specifically designed to help thosewho are new in the profession to begin toengage in enquiry into their individual practiceand focus on the priorities of the Welshgovernment for school improvement.

    What will I get out of the programme?You will be part of a group of newly-qualifiedteachers who are facing the challenges of thefirst few years in teaching. The aim of theprogramme is to help you develop a criticalknowledge and understanding of the curriculumand pastoral challenges you meet in a supportivelearning environment and provide a stimulatingforum for reflecting on these and otherchallenges. You will be studying pedagogicalconcerns at local and national level, as well as theimpact of social factors on learner attainment.

    What modules would I study?The pathway comprises taught modules and adissertation. Modes of delivery will combinetaught sessions with on-line learning. Themodule content is based on core themes ofrelevance to early career professionals. You willbe able to choose a dissertation topic in relationto the context you are working in and accordingto your research interests.

    How does the assessment work?Assessment is by coursework assignmentsthroughout the taught component of the

    programme. The assessments take a variety offorms, to include: written reports of small-scaleresearch, posters, learning journals, blogs andseminar presentations

    How long does it usually take?The programme will normally take you two yearspart-time to complete. This is a 120 creditprogramme if you have already accumulated 60credits from your post-graduate Certificate inEducation (PGCE). You need 180 credits of studyaltogether for the award of a Master’s degreeand so this is made up of the two years of studyon this programme and the 60 credits you bringfrom your PGCE study. If you do not have 60credits from your PGCE then the programme willnormally take three years to complete part-time.
