The Titanic sank on 15 April 1912

FIRST, Carl Asplund bought seven tickets for himself,

his wife Selma, and his ve children. They were going to

start a new life in America. They were happy and excited.

Then, on 14 April The Titanic started to sink! There

were people running everywhere. Some were lucky, but 1,500

people died in the tragedy. Someone pushed Selma Asplund

into a small boat. Suddenly the little boat was in the water,

but where was Carl? Selma never saw him again.

After that, a large ship The Carpathia took Selma to New

York. Two of her children were with her. She had Carl’s

watch, some keys and his gold ring. These were Selma’s

treasures. Finally, on 15 April 1964, exactly 52 years after the

tragedy, Selma died. She was 91 years old.

Writing 2 You are at the elephant centre. Write a postcard to a friend.

Top Jobs

Hello, I’m Benson. My job is great. I look after ani-mals, but I’m not a zoo-keeper and I’m not a vet. I work at an elephant centre in Nairobi. Our elephants come from all over Africa, and some have serious injuries. Many of them are very weak and hungry at rst. Their mothers are dead. We have to give the babies milk from bottles, and sleep with them at night time. Sometimes they are scared and unhappy. We work very long hours and we all wear green uniforms. Every day we play with them and look after them, so they know us. We help them to get well. Our days are never dull!

Every morning the public are allowed to come and visit the centre. They mustn’t come too close, and we don’t let them give the elephants food. They are allowed to watch an elephant football game and take photos. They shouldn’t touch the elephants. They can ask a lot of questions and we are happy to answer. There is more information on our website: http://www.sheldrickwildlifetrust.org/

The elephants don’t have to go back to the wild until they are ready. We have to be very careful and patient too. The elephants need time to learn to live a differ-ent life. My job is very challenging and varied. It isn’t very well-paid but I’m lucky, I love it! It’s very exciting to work with these beautiful animals and to help them live in the wild again. When they go, we never forget them, and they remember us too because elephants never forget!
