America East Preseason Poll

Final Standings

No. 2 Maine opens AE Championships:The University of Maine softball team returns to the site of its 2016 America East Championship victory and will take on No. 6 Hartford in the opening round of the 2017 America East Championships. Maine will be going for its fourth conference title and look to become the first team to win back-to-back conference championships since Boston University did so in 2009-2010.

2016 AE Championships:In last year’s America East Championships, Maine entered as the No. 2 seed and cruised through, winning three in a row to take home its third league title. In game one, Maine used a five run bottom of the fourth to help lead it to a 7-4 victory over Albany. Erin Bogdanovich threw a complete game shutout in game two as Maine put across three runs in the first and held on to a 3-0 victory over Binghamton. Maine’s offense exploded in the championship as it notched a record-setting 18 hits on the way to a 14-1, 5-inning drubbing of Albany.

A Look at Maine:Since putting together a 7-game win streak, Maine has lost five-straight entering tournament action after dropping a regular season doubleheader finale to Albany last weekend. Maine fell in game one to the Great Danes, 2-0, before coming up short in a comeback, 6-5. First team all-conference selection Rachel Carlson leads the way, ranking sixth in the league at .355 and pacing Maine in runs (23), total hits (44) and stolen bases (12). Carlson posted 12 multi-hit games and was equally impressive in league action where she hit .382, belting 21 hits with 13 runs and four steals in 16 games. Meg Royle, a second team all-conference selec-tion, hit .286 with 32 hits, 16 RBI and 10 runs with six doubles, three triples and three home runs. In league play, Royle hit .326. Alyssa Derrick, second team all-league, is Maine’s power threat. Derrick, led the league in home runs with 13 and paced Maine with 31 RBIs. Derrick ranked fourth in America East with a .612 slugging percentage and hit .373 in league play. Erika Leonard is adding a .239 mark and led Maine in runs (24) and doubles (7) to go along with 21 RBI out of the lead-off spot.

In the circle, Maine is led by second team all-conference selection Erin Bogda-novich. Bogdanovich is 5-11 on the year with a 4.44 ERA in 27 appearances and 17 starts. The lefty struck out a team-high 71, 43 coming in league play, over 97.2 innings. Junior righty Molly Flowers is 6-9 on the year with a 4.65 ERA and 68 strikeouts in 78.1 innings. Against league opponents, Flowers is 4-2 with a 2.12 ERA and 45 strikeouts.

A Look at Hartford:The Hawks picked up their first win over a conference foe when they defeated No. 3 Stony Brook, 2-1, in Wednesday’s meeting. Lexi Wilkerson leads the way for Hartford with a .264 mark and 21 RBIs with six home runs. Freshman Isabella Gerone is 1-12 in the circle with a 5.25 ERA and 23 strikeouts over 77.1 innings. Bianca Ross, who homered against Stony Brook on Wednesday, is 1-16 in the circle with a 6.28 ERA and 34 strikeouts over 100.1 innings of work.

The Series:Maine enters play with an 11-game win streak over Hartford. Most recently, Maine swept a series at Hartford with wins of 7-6, 6-2 and 8-4. In the most recent series, Rachel Carlson and Alyssa Derrick each posted a .500 average. Carlson went 6-for-12 with 3 RBI and was a perfect 3-for-3 in stolen bases while Derrick was 4-for-8 with five RBI, two runs and a home run. Molly Flowers picked up a win in the circle and tossed 9.1 innings, giving up three runs, two earned, while striking out 12.

• Guided Deering HS (Portland, ME) to baseball state title in 2009

------------------------------------------ Mike Coutts, in his fifth year on staff and second at the helm, was promoted to head coach in the summer of 2015. Coutts had one of the most impressive head coaching debuts in Maine his-tory, guiding the Black Bears to their third America East Championship and the first since 2004. Maine went on to compete at the Athens Regional, taking on Georgia and Oklahoma State. During the impressive 2015-16 cam-paign under Coutts’ leadership, the Black Bears set numerous records in-cluding most runs in a season (263), most hits in a season (430). Coutts, who helped Maine’s offense raise its batting average +64 points from the

year prior, led Maine to a team aver-age of .315 (2nd in AE), and a league-leading ERA of 3.19. Individually, the Black Bears swept the America East postseason awards as Coutts mentored the league’s Player of the Year, Pitcher of the Year and Rookie of the Year. Overall, Maine’s 28 wins in 2016 were its most in six years. Coutts served his first three years as an assistant and the 2014 season as associ-ate head coach. On Sept. 25, 2012, former head coach Lynn Coutts announced the hiring of Mike Coutts in an assistant role. Mike Coutts, a former Black Bear baseball team member and assistant Black Bear baseball coach, primarily focused on working closely with the hitters, in-fielders and the catchers. Coutts brought with him a wealth of knowledge on the diamond as he spent the 1987-97 seasons as an asso-ciate/assistant baseball coach under the great John Winkin at the University of Maine. During his time assisting at Maine, Coutts helped lead the Black Bears to NCAA Regional Appearances in 1989, 1990, 1991 and 1993 while coaching 10 future Major League Base-ball professionals. Coutts spent four seasons as a member of the Black Bear baseball team from 1978-81. In 1981, as the team captain, Coutts helped lead the squad to a Col-lege World Series appearance. Coutts was named to the Northeast Regional First Team in 1980-81; an All-New England First Team selection in 1981; a Cape Cod Summer League All-Star in 1980 and a Yankee Conference First Team selection from 1979-81.

HEAD COACH MIKE COUTTS - Second season/5th on staff From 1995-2002, Coutts was the head coach of the Cotuit Kettleers of the Cape Cod Summer Baseball League. While with the Kettleers, Coutts led the team to a pair of league champion-ships in 1995 and 1999. Following the 1995 season, Coutts was named 1995 Cape Cod Coach of the Year. Coutts coached professionals Chase Utley, Garrett Atkins and Mitch Stetter all while they were with the Kettleers. Following his time in the Cape League, Coutts held head coaching stints in the Alaska Collegiate Baseball League and the New England Collegiate Baseball League. From 2009-10, Coutts was the head baseball coach at Deering High School in Portland, Maine. While at Deering, Coutts led the team to the 2009 State Championship and a perfect 22-0 re-cord after racking up 50-consecutive victories. At one point, Coutts’ Deer-ing squad was ranked as the #50 pro-gram in the United States. More recently, Coutts was the head coach at Scarborough High School in Scarborough, Maine. While at the helm, Coutts led the team to a Western Maine Championship in 2012. Since 1997, Coutts operated the Fro-zen Ropes Baseball & Softball Training Center in Portland Maine where he has conducted numerous coaching clinics as well as offering one-on-one training in all areas of the game. Coutts also co-authored “Organiza-tion of Indoor Baseball Practice” while producing a video by the same title. Coutts graduated from the Univer-sity of Maine in 1982 with a Bachelor of Health and Physical Education be-fore earning his Master of Education/Administration in 1989, also from the University of Maine. Coutts and his wife, former head coach Lynn Coutts, are the parents of two children; son Jackson and daugh-ter Maggie.
