A herd of cowswas found idlingclose to thecentral median of11th Avenue,Ashok Nagarcausing hindra-nce to motoristsat around 2 p.mon Jan. 7.

A nearbyresident told Mambalam Times that the cows are a big nuisance to bothmotorists and pedestrians. He said that its owners let them loose on the roadand the Corporation takes no action against them.

Bomb threat hoax leads topanic in schools

threats in Chennai schools onJan. 4, a number of parentscrowded outside Sri RKMSarada Vidyalaya (UsmanRoad, T. Nagar) to pick up theirchildren during class hours ataround 11 a.m.

After repeated pressurefrom the parents, the schoolauthorities allowed the stu-dents to go home.

A teacher told MambalamTimes that the staff tried toconvince the crowd that thebomb scare was a hoax, butthe parents refused to takeany risk and demanded thatthe authorities let out the stu-dents.

It caused heavy traffic con-gestion and policemen had tobe deployed to control thecrowd. The scare was traced to

a hoax call that claimed a bombhad been placed in a city school.

According to the police, thefirst call was received at thecity police control room claim-ing that a bomb had beenplanted in a school inKelambakkam. “This call wastransferred to the Kanchee-puram district police,” said apolice officer.

Soon, rumours flew thick andfast through WhatsApp andother social media sites, lead-ing to a perception that manyschools were being targeted,with the result worried par-ents began to pick up theirwards from schools.

Police also took toWhatsApp and Facebook tocounter the rumours and as-sure the citizens that the bombthreat was a hoax and therewas no need to panic.

A portion of RajamannarStreet (near its junction withG. N. Chetty Road, T. Nagar)caved in at around 1.30 p.m onJan, 6 when a loaded tankercontracted to Metrowater wasmoving on the stretch. The rearportion of the tanker includingthe wheels sunk into the foot-deep circular pit.

Traffic police rushed to thespot immediately. Policemenused a truck and pulleys toextricate the tanker from thepit, which deepened due to thevehicle’s weight. The operationtook four hours during whichthere was a traffic jam.

The incident created panicamong nearby residents. The

spot was barricaded and thelarge pit was filled with rubble.

Improper arrangement byorganizers led to chaos duringthe distribution of relief mate-rials at Elegant Apartments(Lake View Road, West Mam-balam) on the evening of Jan.6.

Duped by sales girlSir, I am 72 years old. I was

cheated of Rs. 3,500 by a younggirl who posed as a ‘Indane GasAgency’ representative on Jan.5 at around 9 a.m and sold mespurious stove accessories.

She said that Indane haslaunched a new door-to-doorscheme for senior citizens inChennai on stove accessorieslike ‘Gas burner protectioncover’ and ‘gas saver’ withwarranty.

She also produced a gasagency receipt in the name ofIndane along with registrationnumber and contact numberto prove her authenticity. I purchased the accessories in good faith from her, After using theaccessories for a few hours, I realized they were of poor quality.

Sewage overflows at Padmanabhan Street-Periyar Road junction

Water table in T. Nagar /Mambalam rises by 9 feet

Rains aplenty in the last two months have replenishedChennai’s shallow aquifers, with groundwater rising by upto30 feet in the city.

As per data collated by Metrowater Department from 145observation wells in the city, the groundwater level has risenby between 6 feet and 30 feet across the city.

In T. Nagar and Mambalam areas, the average waterlevel has risen from the pre-monsoon level of 4.15 metersbelow ground level to 1.5 meters post rains which shows anincrease in level by 2.65 meters (about 9 feet).

He said that houses with open shallow wells will reap thebenefits of the water table rise, whereas those with 100 feetborewells will not be able to tap into the fresh water broughtby the rainfall.

He further said that the shallow aquifers can be tappedthrough borewells by slotting pipes at 20-30 feet belowsurface or by digging tube wells to draw the water.

The highest recorded rise in water level of 10.7 meters (35feet) is in Balaji Nagar, Ambattur and Saidapet 7.3 meters(24 feet).

According to Sekar Raghavan (Director, Rain Center),the water quality has also improved as the rain water dilutedthe metals and other impurities below ground surface. Hesaid that in most parts, the total dissolved solids count wasless than 500 parts per million (ppm), which is the desirablelimit for drinking.

He further said that this big rise in water level has not beenobserved in densely populated areas like Ayanavaram,Tondiarpet and Thiruvottriyur due to lack of rainwaterharvesting as the houses are lined up next to each other,leaving no space to sink recharge wells.
