Weekly Message

Gospel Reflec)on-3rd Sunday of Easter

"Why do quesUons arise in your hearts?" A]er the ResurrecUon,

the Apostles experienced their fair share of incredulity. Jesus had

died-John had been there-and now the tomb was empty. What

should they believe? Was the Jesus before them truly real? And who

was Jesus really? It's no surprise that the Apostles were iniUally

"startled and terrified" to the extent that they "thought that they

were seeing a ghost."

Jesus has compassion on his confused friends. Once he affirms his

non-ghostly idenUty-"look at my hands and my feet, that it is I

myself"-Jesus gets down to business. He has risen from the dead,

but life would not conUnue as normal. Throughout Jesus' ministry,

he spoke in parables and veiled propheUc language. His followers

likely thought much of his words were metaphors, some symbolism

for the person and their relaUon to God. Now Jesus has something

else in mind. He "opened their minds to understand the scriptures,"

making known the connecUons between his own words and deeds

and "everything wri!en about [him] in the law of Moses and in the

prophets and psalms."

Why now? Why this increased depth of understanding? The answer

lies in the shi]ing role of the Apostles. "You are witnesses of these

things." The treasury of truth is no longer Jesus' responsibility

alone but our own. Then and there, the Apostles are appointed to

proclaim the death and resurrecUon of Jesus, the forgiveness of sins

and the mercy of God. This message is no longer for only the Jewish

people but "all the naUons."

This is our invitaUon! We have the rich heritage of the Church's

teaching. By sacramental grace, God's "peace" is "with [us]." We,

too, are sent to proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ and the

hope that belongs to his call.

WHAT IS YOUR CATHOLIC IQ?

On April 21, we will celebrate the Feast of St. Anselm. He was a

Benedic)ne monk, abbot, philosopher and archbishop of:

a) Canterbury

b) London

c) Burgundy

d) Riesling.

Why do we do that? CATHOLIC TRADITIONS EXPLAINED

Ques"on: My friend has never heard of Christ and I want to share

the Gospel with her but I'm afraid to. How do I share my faith?

Answer: There are a lot of ways to bring up the topic of religion,

without being judgmental or pushy. Begin by asking what her

thoughts are about religion, or what her experience was growing up.

Finding common ground is o]en easier than you think, because the

quesUons and problems we have about God, the presence of evil,

our purpose in life, and our relaUonship with God are universal

concerns.

Why are you afraid? If you do not want to insult or offend

someone, don't be pushy or judgmental. If you are uncertain about

how to explain your own faith, do a li!le reading or pracUce with a

friend. If you measure success only by this person converUng, focus

your a!enUon more on beginning the conversaUon, not on bringing

it to a perfect close! Faith is a journey of many acts of belief, many

discussions about God, and many choices about how we pracUce

what we preach. In some we will have great success; in others we

will need forgiveness and perseverance. The most important thing

to keep in mind is that the Holy Spirit is always at work and our most

humble efforts can bear great fruit. Have faith in God because he

has faith in you!

Bereavement Support Group Sessions St. Bruno's Circle of Life Bereavement Ministry will offer

Bereavement Support Sessions on Tuesdays,

June 5 through July 24, from 6:30 to 8:30 PM.

Are you experiencing feelings of sadness and sorrow due to the

death of a loved one? Grieving is very hard work, and Ume alone

may not heal your grief. It's what you do with your Ume that can

make a big difference. St. Bruno's Circle of Life will host a series of

grief support sessions on Tuesdays beginning June 5 through July

24, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. These sessions will help with un-

derstanding the rhythms of the grieving process. Gathering with

others who are dealing with the emoUons of loss may be the first

step needed to move toward healing. Everyone is welcome!

Shroud of Turin Exhibit Have you heard of the Shroud of Turin? It is a 14-foot long “finely-woven

linen cloth” that many believe is one of the actual burial cloths of Jesus

menUoned in the Gospels. “The Man of the Shroud” touring exhibit is

free for young and old to see, including a full-scale replica of the shroud.

It presents the results of a comprehensive scienUfic and forensic study

with numerous photographs and illustraUons. The exhibit is the work of

the Center for the Study of the Passion of Christ and the Holy Shroud

and Monsignor Giulio Ricci and other scienUsts, who spent more than 25

years researching the shroud. The Catholic Church does not take an

official stance regarding the shroud’s authenUcity, but does say that it is

an object worthy of veneraUon. St. Mary Parish, 225 S Hartwell Ave,

LIVE THE LITURGY -

INSPIRATION FOR THE WEEK

Why are you troubled? Life can easily get

the best of us. Anxiety, worry, doubt, and

uneasiness are just some of the things that

can trouble our hearts. O]en we are

troubled about temporal things.

SomeUmes our faith troubles us and we

wonder where God may be. If we allow

Jesus to open our minds so we can

understand the Scriptures and the

significance of his passion, death, and

resurrecUon, we can begin to trust that

God's plan includes something much more

than the current concern of our minds.

Jesus can then become a light of revelaUon

who helps us keep our lives in perspecUve

and persevere.

Sharing the Gospel For the Kids

Turn to God in the name

of Jesus Christ so that

you will be forgiven.

When you hurt someone,

say to God and to the

person, "I made a mistake. I am very sorry.

Will you forgive me?" A]er God forgives

you, he will show you good things to do in

his Son's name. Choosing ways to honor

and serve God will lead you to heaven.

Prayer

Father God, forgive me and show me ways

to serve you in the name of your Son, Jesus

Christ.

Mission for the Week

When someone hurts me I will forgive. I will

ask God to forgive me if I hurt someone.

Third Sunday of Easter

In this Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus explains the

meaning of the scriptures. Like the

disciples, when we offer and receive

forgiveness our hearts burn because we

encounter the risen Christ within us.

Have you considered answering

the call to “help the poor find

forgiveness and healing in their

life” by joining the Society of

St. Vincent de Paul?

Hurting? Want to Help Someone Who Is? Do you desire healing from anxiety, anger,

depression, or illness? Freedom from

addicUon or pa!erns of sin you can’t seem

to break? To understand and help someone

else who desires healing or freedom?

At the Healing the Whole Person Retreat,

Sr. Miriam James Heidland, SOLT, and Dr.

Bob Schuchts, author of Be Healed, help us

understand and receive Christ’s healing and

peace in the heart of the Catholic

Church. April 26, 6pm-9:30pm, April 27,
