Happy Holidays and welcome to M Magazine Winter 2011. As 2011 comes to a close Iwould like to take this opportunity to thank all those who have supported our efforts atM Magazine. We have had so many wonderful contributing writers, photographers anddesigners who have shared their talents to make M Magazine such a success. We lookforward to another strong year in 2012 and wish all of our readers the best.

On to Real Estate....

As we close out 2011 we have seen a resurgence in the strength of the non foreclo-sure market. While foreclosures and short sales are still posting strong sales, the retailmarket continues to offer buyers the opportunity to purchase move in ready, updatedhomes that are not far off from the prices of many foreclosed homes. Financing re-mains strong across all price ranges and interest rates are still at record lows. We an-ticipate a continued uptick locally across the community and especially in theNorthwest areas. We have definitely started feeling the benefits from the oil shellboom trickling down into our area bringing both oilfield jobs along with many profes-sional engineers and chemist.

In closing, I would like to invite you to stay in touch with us at Mirabal Montalvo. Weare planning on expanding M Magazine in 2012 with more content, more fashion andeven more homes! Remember we welcome your suggestions. If you would like some-thing covered please let us know. We are here to serve you!

Sincerest Thanks,

James Mirabal

American Diabetes Association “All In For A Cure” Annual Gala

The glam. The glitter. The pizzaz. All the hallmarks ofSun City came alive on Oct. 22 at the American Dia-betes Association's annual gala.

This year's theme was "All in for a Cure" and chairsDeborah Fisher, Meridith Carter and Susan Gonzalespulled out all the stops and put on a show that wouldmake Elvis proud.

When I arrived at Texas A&M University-CorpusChristi's Performing Arts Center, I met BrittanyHilliard, who served as hostess at the check-in table.I was in line with Dr. Thomas and Erin WilderandHilliard gave us our tickets and then handed each ofus $5,000 in play money. Intrigued, I asked what wewere going to use it for and she explained that afterthe symphony performance we would be able to playVegas style games. A few steps into the room madeit all clear. There were gaming tables set up all overthe three floors of the center, which was transformedinto a casino.Greg and Mona Lisa Rawls were thenext couple I ran into and since they make frequentVegas pilgrimages they were really excited about thetheme. After cocktails and chitchat, the bells rangand the lights dimmed to indicate to us that it wastime for Lee Gwozdzto lead the orchestra in theevening's entertainment.

I found my seat in the auditorium and introduced my-self to my neighbors, Amber and Brent Fish. Amber isa volunteer for the Diabetes Association and the cou-

ple were attending the annual gala for the first time. They didn't hold back though, I heard them joiningthe sing-a-long with gusto.

Bryan Smith, an American Diabetes Associationboard member, was the host for the evening and in-troduced Gwozdz as "Leeberachi." Gwozdz enteredwearing a spectacular red sequined jacket and ledthe orchestra through a fun lineup of Vegas hits.

Next, Smith introduced Scott Elliff, who charmed usall with spot on renditions of Rat Pack favorites fol-lowed by a crowd-pleasing sing-a-long of Elvis hits.Elliff then signed off with Frank Sinatra's "Fly Me tothe Moon" and the crowd went wild with applause.Gwozdz and the orchestra then did a hilarious per-formance piece entitled "Godzilla Eats Vegas," whichhad us all roaring with laughter.

The next stars to hit the stage were the event chairs. They presented the Honorary Chairs for the evening,Chris and Robert Adler along with the Cure-Care-Commitment Awards, which were given to Allen Bor-denand Driscoll Children's Hospital. Chris Adler put itbest when she told the crowd why she had chosen toserve as Honorary Chair this year, "When I lookaround at people whom I love the most, so many ofthem have diabetes. It's our pleasure to help withthis event."

Borden said he has greatly enjoyed volunteering forthe association for the past 20 years because he isproud to help an organization that does such greatthings in our community.Donna Quinn, the hospital'svice president of Operations and Quality, spoke abouthow proud the hospital is of their partnership with

the association to run Camp Sandcastle, a camp fordiabetic children.Wes Hoskins then served as the auctioneer for thelive auction, which had a mix of everything from tripsto hunts to barbecues. After the auction, it was timeto head back out to the casino floor for dinner andgames. Dr. Mary Jane Garza and I found a table nearthe action so we could nibble and check out the funat one of the tables.Jessica and Chris Burnettjoinedus shortly after. Alexis Hunter was the Queen Bee atthe table for a long time and all of the guestsseemed to really enjoy the event.

All of the fun of Vegas without the hassle of a planeride is a fun way to spend an evening.

For most people, as we moveinto the holiday season, folksare getting giddy with antici-pation - especially the youngones - awaiting the arrival ofthe big man himself, SaintNick. This is truly a magicaltime of the year for grownups with childlike hearts andchildren all over the world. Iguess that's why they call itthe "most wonderful time ofthe year".

As an interior decorator anddesign professional what I consider the "The most won-derful time of the year" has just recently passed. The timeof the year that is truly a joyful time for me is around themiddle of October. The anticipation leaves me countingthe days like a 5 year old counting down the days untilChristmas morning. What about October could give a de-sign pro visions of sugar plums? It is time for our biggest, most exciting furniture and accessory market of the year. The International Furniture Market at High Point, NorthCarolina.

Vendors, artisans, furniture and accessory designers, de-scend upon the tiny town of High Point, making that slum-bering town come to life much like Santa Claus does forthe rest of mankind. Every building and every street cor-ner bustles with excitement and cheer. Artisans and ven-dors from all over the world come to show off their latest

creations, product designs and highly specialized materialsthat will leave those of us in the industry who use them inour everyday work elated and and inspired for our clients. We get inspired by it all, return ready to make their homesand office spaces as fabulously fantastical and magical asthat Christmas tree in Rockefeller Center. Just not quite aslarge.

We counted down the days. Made our wish lists, checkedthem twice - no, much more than twice. We hoped thatour "nice" moments outnumbered our "naughty" ones toguarantee that we would find just what we wanted whenwe opened the door that great market morning.

And what to our wandering eyes would appear upon ar-rival? So much more than we hoped. There were shinythings, gorgeousness at every turn. More bling and beautymixed together than we thought possible. Colors thatmade us cheer. Reflections from chrome and brass filledour eyes with tracers, lights flickering in each showroom. Itinvoked thoughts of a favorite holiday pastime- going fromhouse to house to see holiday lights. The excitement I feltreminded me of the look on my son's face last year as helooked in wander at each house, each one more vibrantthan the last. It was a sight to behold, all of it so lovely andbright.

Yet, more than the falala fabulousness and beauty we saw,the most inspiring thing this market was undoubtedly theinnovative approach to design and the dedication to "goinggreen" at most every stop. It was a gift in itself. It's gift youlove the most. The one that you know is going to be a partof your life forever.

Page 34: M Real Estate & Lifestyle Magazine

Obviously, we have endured some tough economic timesthese past couple of years. It is the drive and pursuit of anartist to interpret what they see happening in the worldaround them. And interpret they did. You know when yousee a piece of art, read a book you can't put down or heara song that changes you and makes you want to be a bet-ter person. Well, that was the feeling I got as I walked theshowrooms. It made me want to be better at makingspaces for my clients more creative in a progressive waythat meets their need for style while minding function. Atthe same time, being mindful of the environment. Is it achallenge? Yes. But with the products and choices we sawit is becoming far more possible than ever before.

The "trends" we saw were minimalist, simple yet strong.Clean but somehow very warm. It was a major turn towardmodernism with twists that made the furniture and textilesanything but harsh and cold. While we are in love with the"modern" look, many of our clients here in South Texascringe when they hear the word. They are thinking wemean rigid, cold - lacking character. But we mean nothingclose to that. We were overjoyed to see what we are re-ferring to reflected in the designs at this market. From sim-ple tables with metal legs juxtaposed with tops instunning, reclaimed woods. To chrome lamps with softshades made from cork or maybe compressed paper. There was furniture made from reclaimed telephone poles, light fixtures made from coke bottles and aluminum cans -all in amazing designs that would bring new life to ANY en-vironment, be it traditional or modern. To say these weretrends isn't quite right. The recycling, reclaimed, re-usedmaterials were made with such innovative vision and with

such eco-conscienceness that one can only conclude thatthis is the way of the future. Maybe this is will become thenew "tradition". For the sake of our environment, let's allhope so.In the way of overall design concepts, the use of fewer, larger accessories with tons of impact conveyed thatclean, minimalist look. It gave us a sense of less chaos, more peaceful spaces. This is another trend we were sohappy to see. The impact that can be made with thesecutting edge accessories and textiles we saw is major, with far less to purchase. We loved seeing so many prod-ucts used from nature - or from dumpsters - that wouldhave otherwise been discarded a few years ago. Recycledeverything was the story. We loved the animal hyde's,dyed or natural, used so prevalently. These hyde's wouldhave once ended up in a burn or trash pile. Yet they noware being used for everything from rugs to pillows, ot-tomans to chairs. The creative use along with the dyesthat were added bring warmth to any space. Other textilesthat amazed were some of the synthetics we saw. Madeto look like fur, silk, cotton, linen. They fooled even themost educated eye. Most made of recycled fibers - mostall washable and cleanable at home. LOVE THAT!!

Speaking of warmth, while there was a lot of lacquer andacrylic in the mix, the wood color story this year was defi-nitely moving in the direction of gray washes. It made methink of driftwood, old boats and buildings. It was every-where we turned. Without fear, the designers were mixingit in with other exotic woods. Acacia, ipay, mango wood, bamboo, walnut -AND lacquers and acrylics, chrome and

bling. You name it. It was a creative free-for-all. Throw twoor three woods together in the right balance and you havesomething far more interesting than the boring old bed-room or dining "groups" that leave us crying in our morninglatte. Bring this kind of eclectic mix into your home and youhave something all yours - your home, your refuge, yourpersonality reflected.

Last but certainly not least, I can't write about this seasonstrends in decor without once again mentioning the impor-tance and glory of COLOR!!! The fastest and most amazingtransformations are made with color. What a simpleprocess to paint an accent wall in your home. Paint it againwhen you're over it. But paint if you can. If you don't havetime to paint before your holiday party, get out there andfind a major color splash in a vegetable dyed rug or vintagedyed pillows. Look for palettes that flow together. Think"jewel" tones, colors of the sea, a cornucopia, or vivid rain-bow. Throw a few colors together from any one of thesepalettes and repeat them throughout your space. Contrastthem with a strong backdrop of chocolate, black, or evenwhite. Just don't be afraid to use color. It's certain to bringyou holiday cheer that will last for years to come.

Try a few of these "trends". Just have fun with it. Maybego out on a limb and consult a decorator or designer whocan assist you in your transformation.
