MOUNTAIN GORILLA

~ Especially About IGCP~

INTRODUCTION About gorilla there are three kinds of gorilla ・ the East Lowland gorilla→there are 3,000 ~ 5,000

・ the West Lowland gorilla→there are about 35,000

・ the Mountain gorilla→there are 700 ~ 1,000

Why mountain gorillas are less than others? →I decide to research mountain gorilla

About mountain gorilla ・ they are one of the closest to human in primates ・ about 79% DNA is same as human’s

・ they inhabit forest in Rwanda , Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)

・ there are 700 ~ 1000 → they are specified as endangered species

Why the number of them decrease?

In 1980s ・ civil war ・ infection of human disease ・ deforestation etc.

But!

A lot of effort to save them many groups → increase gradually now

ABOUT CONSERVATION GROUP Main group : International Gorilla Conservation Programme(IGCP) 〈 the goal of IGCP 〉

To ensure the conservation of mountain gorillas and

their regional afromontane forest habitat in Rwanda ,

Uganda and DRC

Outline of IGCP ・ formed in 1991 , IGCP comprises three coalition partner African Wildlife Foundation (AWF)-based in Kenya and the US

Fauna & Flora International (FFI)-based in the UK and Australia

World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF)-based worldwide

IGCP WORKSBuilding capacity 〈 IGCP priority 〉

to accomplish priority ・ to assist the park management authorities ・ to train park staff ・ the restructuring of the institutions responsible for protected areas ・ helping to develop stronger tools for monitoring ・ to plan of protection and management activities etc.

To build and enhance the capacity of the institutions

Regional collaboration

it is imperative to co-ordinate conservation effort ・ ecological monitoring and surveillance ・ tourism development etc.

IGCP acts as a facilitator among three countries

We don’t recognize international boundaries!

Monitoring

Two fundamental questions ①What are the threats to the parks and its wildlife? ②How effective are current management , protection and conservation activities?

Monitoring provides IGCP with the answer

・ park monitoring ・ socio-economic monitoring etc.

IGCP decide many various activities

Monitoring is a cornerstone of IGCP’s programme

Other works ・ Improving livelihoods

・ Community initiatives

・ Influencing policy etc.

WHAT CAN WE DO FOR IGCP~ DONATION ~

Donate ・ we can donate to IGCP from IGCP’s webpage

those donation will be transacted in GBP and earmarked for IGCP via FFI ・ if we wish to make a bank transfer directly to IGCP , we have to research and understand IGCP’s bank details in Rwanda

MY OPINION I think we should translate IGCP’s webpage into Japanese , because this webpage is written in English so Japanese people are reluctant to read.

Japanese people don’t donate for IGCP

Do you have other ideas what

we can do for IGCP?
