Fig. 14- INTAKE AND EXHAUST VALVE ASSEMBLIES

intake and exhaust valves are manufactured with 45 degree angle faces.

All of the valves and the bottom face of the cylinder head are numbered to show the correct valve locations. Refer to Fig. 13, showing the arrangement of the intake and exhaust valves.

The valves, valve springs and retaining assemblies are shown in Fig. 14.

REMOVAL AND INSPECTION

To remove valves, use a valve spring compressor. Place valves in a numbered rack so, if they are to be re-used, they may be installed into their original valve guides. The original valves are numbered from the front of the engine.

Carefully clean and inspect all valves. Discard any valves that have heads which are warped, burned, cracked, cupped, pitted or worn too thin to allow a minimum finished valve head margin of 1/32 inch. Also replace valves that have scored stems or worn retainer lock grooves. If valves appear to be in good condition, measure stem diameters to determine amount of wear present. Replace valves having worn stem diameters of 0.371 inch or less.

SERVICING THE VALVES

New and old valves, which are only slightly pitted or burned, should be refaced with suitable

refacing equipment as follows:

NOTE: Several different makes of equipment are available for servicing the valves. Make sure to follow manufacturer's operating instructions for particular type of equipment being used.

1. Dress grinding wheel as required, to make certain it is true and smooth.

2. Set chuck at a 45° angle for both the intake and exhaust valves.

3. Clamp valve stem in chuck of the machine.

4. Start machine and move valve head in line with grinder wheel. Turn feed screw UNTIL VALVE FACE JUST LIGHTLY CONTACTS THE WHEEL.

5. Then turn valve and pencil mark high spot on head of valve. Rechuck valve one-half turn from original position and repeat Step 4. If high spots are in same location on valve face for both valve positions, valve is warped. If high spots occur in different locations on valve face, investigate and correct cause before proceeding. Check chuck alignment, bearings in machine and for presence of foreign particles.

6. Lightly wet-grind valves until the valve face is true and smooth all around valve. Take light cuts and do not remove any more material from valve face than is necessary. If finished valve margin is less than 1/32 inch thick, the valve should be replaced because of danger of burning and cupping.

7. Remove valve from chuck and resurface rocker arm end of valve stem if required. Install stem in "V" Block and feed valve squarely against grinding wheel to remove any slight wear or pitting from end of stem.

NOTE: Only extreme end of valve stem is hardened. Do not grind end excessively.

8. Clean finished valves and valve seats of grinding particles. Then check valves for proper contact with seats in cylinder head as outlined under heading "Valve Seats".

DISASSEMBLY, INSPECTION AND REASSEMBLY OF TRANSMISSION

The pictures referred to show the transmission completely removed from the Tractor and being entirely disassembled. This may not be required. See text under "Removing the Transmission."

The instructions are separated into sub-headings which provide complete procedures pertaining to the subject named. The transmission may be completely disassembled and the named subjects repaired by following the instructions under all sub-headings. Partial disassembly and repair may be done by referring to the sub-heading and following the procedures given.

SHIFTER FORKS AND RAILS

Refer to Fig. 9. Transmission must be separated from center housing

and top cover removed.

1. Remove forks and rails as follows:

a. Loosen setscrew in planetary shift fork then slide fork with coupler from planetary shift rail.

b. Remove neutral switch and detent springs.

c. Remove detent pins.

d. Remove rail stop plate.

e. Remove locking setscrews from planetary shift selector, low and reverse shifter fork and intermediate and high shifter fork.

f. Slide shifter rails from transmission case and remove shifter forks and planetary shift selector.

2. Reinstall shifter forks and rails as follows:

NOTE: Prior to reinstalling the shifter forks ancl mils, all other parts of the trunsmission should be assembled.

-5-

a. Drop shifter forks into position on the "change speed" gears.

b. Slide planetary shifter rail through the transmission and start planetary shift selector over its shifter rail. The forked portion of the selector is to be "up" and toward the outside of the transmission case ( ie: setscrew toward outside of case.)

c. Slide planetary shifter rail forward into the transmission case and to its limit. Position selector on rail and tighten setscrew. The notch on rail is to be up.

d. Slide shifter rails through the transmission case and the shifter forks.

NOTE: Make sure that the cutaway portion at the rear of the shifter rails will align properly with the rail stop plate ancl pin.

e. Push shifter rails forward to their limits and secure with setscrews in shift forks.

f. Position rail stop plate and pin against the rear of the transmission and secure with bolts.

g. Place planetary shift fork into coupler and insert coupler into planetary, while at the same time, piloting the shift fork over rail. Secure with setscrew.

h. Drop detent pins and springs into their respective ports and lockwire setscrews on shifter forks and shift selector in position. Install "neutral safety" switch.

PLANETARY ASSEMBLY

Transmission must be separated from center housing only.

1. Remove planetary as follows: Refer to Fig. 10.

a. Remove the planetary shift fork and coupler from rail.

b. Remove bolts securing planetary to transmission case.
