The Raja of Bhowal, who had been declared dead and ‘cre-mated’, had joined a group of sanyasis and stayed with them foryears. However family ties pulled him back and he came hometo rejoin the fold.

While many family members accepted him as the dead Rajacome back to life, his wife did not, because she felt convincedthat he was a fake and an impostor! ‘The Bhowal Sanyasi’ wentto court to be recognized as the Raja and be given his estate andproperties. The long legal proceedings went from court to courtfor years and finally, on appeal, it reached the Privy Council inLondon, then the highest court of appeal for India. The LondonCourt recognized him as the real Raja but, regretfully, hepassed away before the Privy Council gave judgment in hisfavor! The Bhowal Sanyasi Case hit the headlines and manyIndian writers made use of it to write novels and films.

C. N. Annadurai and A. S. A. Sami made use of some of theelements of this case in their film ‘Velaikari’. The Bengali writerPrabhat Kumar Mukherjee adapted it for his novel whichDebaki Bose filmed as ‘Ratna Deep’. It had in its cast notedBengali stars of the day Pahadi Sanyal, Chaya Devi, Manju Deand Abhi Bhattacharya. The Bhowal Sanyasi Case has beenfilmed in many forms more than once in Bengali with success.

Bengali films have always enjoyed a certain status andprestige in Indian Cinema and the image had been built up bytalented and famed directors and producers like B. N. Sircar,Debaki Bose, P. C. Barua, Bimal Roy, Nitin Bose, TarunMukherjee, Tapan Sinha, Ritwik Ghatak, Satyajit Ray, MrinalSen, Buddhadev Dasgupta, Aparna Sen and others.

Not surprisingly, Meiyappan was impressed by BengaliCinema. As his humble contribution, he produced a Bengali film‘Aakash Pathal’ (1960) with Pahadi Sanyal and ArundathiMukherjee in the lead and directed by Prabhat Mukherjee.

One of the Hindi films produced by Meiyappan was ‘Chaya’(1961). One of the top filmmakers of India and editor-directorHrishikesh Mukherjee made the film with Hindi film stars SunilDutt, Nirupa Roy and Asha Parekh. During the making of themovie, something happened which speaks volumes aboutMeiyappan’s relentless quest for perfection. It relates to a stillphotograph of the lead pair Sunil Dutt and Asha Parekh.

In every film still photographs are taken in large numbers toserve many purposes. Indeed, in every film budget, a sizablesum is provided for still photographs and a separate technicianis employed to take such ‘stills’ as they are commonly knownin the field. They are given to the press for free advancepublicity, for preparing designs for advertisements, postersand hoardings (‘bill boards’), publicity materials like press-books, handouts and such. And, for technicians like assistantdirectors, to check the continuity of the actors’ costumes, jewels, sets, set decorations, set props and their position in theprevious scene so that ‘continuity jumps’, as they are known, could be avoided. In many films one can see such errors. Thehero wears a white shirt driving a car and, when he reacheshome after a long drive through many roads, it turns blue ! Insome films, even the car changes. In a hit film, the heroine winsa tennis match and, when she reaches home, she carries abadminton racquet in her hands plus a trophy! It speaks of lackof professionalism which Meiyappan hated.

While filming ‘Chaya’, a still of Sunil Dutt and Asha Parekhwas taken and Meiyappan was not satisfied with the qualityof a photograph. He asked for a re-take of the still and the twostars were engaged for two long days for the still photographysession. Many rolls were exposed by different photographersand yet Meiyappan was not satisfied with the results. Suchwas his passion for quality.

Q & A on Credit Card problems - 2My credit card outstanding is Rs.1,26,000 and my gross monthly income is Rs.25,000. After meeting

my expenses I do not have enough to make my monthly minimum due payment. What are theimplications if I stop paying the outstandings?

If you default, you will initially be called directly by your lender, or your lender may allocate your accountto a collection agency. These agencies will try to contact you using various communication channels -telephone calls, letters, email, SMS to remind you to repay the loan outstanding. They may even resortto sending collectors to your home/office to try and collect the dues. After 60 or 90 days of past due, thebank will discontinue your right to use the credit card. This will then be reported to a centralized creditbureau and you will be marked as someone who has delayed repayment. This will, in turn, negativelyimpact your ability to avail loans in the future.

I have not been able to make any repayments on my credit card outstanding on account of beinghospitalized for the past 6 months. As part of my severance package I had received a lump sum paymentfrom my last employer and had used this to make a payment on my credit card outstanding. I receiveda letter from the bank confirming that, against a balance of Rs. 2 lakhs outstanding, they had agreedto accept Rs.1.2 lakhs as a negotiated final settlement of all claims. I made the payment and was underthe assumption that there was no further payment due. I have more recently applied for a housingloan that got rejected. I have been told by the financial institution that my CIBIL report is showingme in an adverse status, and that they could not lend to me. Despite making a final settlement payment, why am I being rejected in the CIBIL report?

Please be aware that whenever you negotiate with your banker for a reduced payment of total dues, orif a collection agency offers you a lower negotiated final settlement payment, as is your case, this reductionfrom the original terms of the payment agreement is reported by your banker to CIBIL. This renegotiatedrepayment will remain on your CIBIL report for 7 years and is likely to impact your ability to avail loansin the future.

I feel that my CIBIL report is incorrectly showing that one of my past loans is in write-off status. How can I correct an error showing up in my CIBIL report?

The moment you find out that you have a write-off account in your credit report, you must immediatelycontact your lender. Your lender will surely help you if you show interest in making the payment and willwork with you to rectify the situation. Get the total amount due on your card calculated with the help ofyour lender. You may be required to present the last monthly bill statement received and some other detailsof your credit card. Your bank will give the exact figure of amount that you owe them. If you find thisto be correct, pay this amount and get a ‘no due’ certificate or payment receipt from your lender. The processwill not be over yet. You will now have to call up your bank again and request them to update the creditbureau. Your bank will update the CIBIL records within a span of 40 days, the write off will get cleared, and the account will be shown as a normal closed account.

You can also contact CIBIL directly if your bank does not co-operate in updating the status to CIBILand tell them about your settlement by showing the payment receipt. After some clarifications and enquiriesfrom the lender, the credit bureau will update the same in your report and your report will be clean.

NO HOLDS BARREDBy M. A. SADANAND

‘India Today’ of June 20 had two ugly faces on the cover which could have given a good heartedchap like me a dozen nightmares had I followed the newly sprung saviours of India - the twin hazardsnamed Ramdev and Anna, the author of the men’s style of skip-a-day stubble.

I skipped the entire cover story and had a brush with immortality when old friend M. F.Husain welcomed me with a bear hug.

“Hello friend, where have you been?”I liked the reference to the pussy cat rote and told him, “I have been to London to see the Queen”. We, the ordinary passing clouds over the rain-washed skies, feel a camaraderie in the unpolluted

vacuum of the world so high, unriven by anything negative. He repeated the hug and I felt that somepeople express their feelings more deeply by gestures than words.

I got a shot of pain thinking about this gesture. Jayalalitha’s first cabinet had K. A. Krishnaswamyas Law Minister. Circumstances so coalesced that I was appointed Government Pleader from whichpost, after a couple of years later, a snake in the grass swung its fangs to end the most beautiful periodof my professional life when Truth really reigned in my life and the snake did not perhaps like it. Youcan’t blame the snake for over producing venom, and so Rasputin had the last laugh.

Krishnaswamy could hardly speak on the phone the next day. One need not be a fictional PerryMason to finger the crook who did it. All of us knew who the viper was.

A few months after the snake-bite, I attended the wedding of a friend’s son when a bear hugenveloped me. Krishnaswamy nearly ckoked me. A hug can dispense justice while others dispensewith justice.

He was a good non-snake which is why God sent for him to wipe off all vipers from the astralJustice Ministry.
