Consul PromotedBy El Salvador
The Consulate of E1 Salvador has beenelevated to a Consulate General by de-cree of tile government of E1 Salvadorand Hon. Jos6 Trabanino, Jr., for morethan 15 years consul of El Salvador inHouston, "has been promoted to the rankof Consul General.
In making the announcement ConsulGeneral Trabanino said his governmenthad acted "hecause of the continued in-creasing importance of the industrial,commercial and agricultural develop-
ment of Texas in its relations with E1Salvador."
Shipments between E1 Salvador andthe Port of Houston in 1966 were some20,000 tons as compared to less than5.000 tons in 1954.

Schuldt, German shipowners and shipbrokers, are celebrating the firm’s hundredth anniversaryduring 1968, and were honored with the presentation of Port of Houston commemorative plaques.One went to the Line’s M. V. SONDERBURG which was in Houston near the anniversary dote ofJanuary 5, and the other to the Line’s home office in Hamburg. The Line was started by HelnrlchSchuldt in Flensburg in 1868. Its first ships entered the Gulf of Mexico in 1908 with liner serviceto Cuba, Mexico and the U. S. as the Ozeon-Linie, the name the service still carries. The first vessel designed and built as a container ship, the M. V. LABONITA, was in Houston recently as part of her regular service fromthe Gulf to the East Coast of Central America. The 260 foot long British-flag vessel was built in Germany and carries 72 20-foot containers. Shehas two Unit mariner cranes on deck and is completely self sufficientfor loading and unloading. The ship is of non-cellular construction andcarries break bulk cargo as well as containers. The Marine Express Lineis represented in Houston by Biehl & Co.

A Swedish station wagon, one of 58,925 foreign autos imported throughHouston during 1967, swings over the side of a ship to land on aManchester Terminal wharf. About 8.5 percent of the total of automobilesimported into the country in 1967 moved through the Port of Houston.National car imports as a whole were much lower than in 1966, butHouston unloaded 1,115 more units than were landed here in 1966. The1967 unloadings were second only to the record of more than 70,000units handled by the Port of Houston in 1959, before U.S. manufacturerswere featuring compact cars.

TEC Terminal, a new terminal on the North Side of the Houston Ship Channel, opened in Marchoffering shippers pipeline, railroad, ship, barge and trucking facilities and providing a completetransportation and packaging service 24 hours a day, seven days a week. TEC Terminals, Inc. is ajoint venture between Robertson Transports Inc. and D. E. Johnson of Houston. The owners describethe installation located at 1500 Clinton Drive in Galena Park next to the Goedpasture Terminal as thefirst "automated distribution center" along the channel. The facility is prepared to blend, packageand store or ship all types of liquid products. It has 41,600 square feet of warehouse space availableand a liquid storage capacity of 12,957,000 gallons.

A giant swamp truck named "Juggernaut" is swung over the Houston Ship Channel before beingloaded onto the Lykes Line’s S. S. REUBEN TIPTON for passage to Mombasa, Kenya. The Juggernaut,one of two, is part of a shipment that includes four shot-hole drill rigs, nine personnel and equipmentcarriers, a mobile instrument house, four house trailers, and a six-passenger airplane. The equipmentwill be used by a Rogers subsidiary to do exploration work for BP Shell Petroleum DevelopmentCompany of Kenya Limited. The shipment is another example of Houston as a project port. (See featurestory on page 8.)
