Communication

A FEW TIPS AND TRICKS FOR PROMOTING STEM FIELDS WITH MIDDLE SCHOOL GIRLS!

Page 6: M AY 8 TH 2015 C OLORADO C ONVENTION C ENTER 700 14 TH S TREET D ENVER, CO 80202 7:15 AM TO 2:30 PM GESTEM 2015 Volunteer Presenter Training Presentation

Introductions

• When you first meet the girls introduce yourself and add a few extras to gain the girls attention…• Why you originally wanted to work in a STEM field (eg.

got a math degree in college, or you saw something on TV that inspired you, etc.)• What was your “ah ha!” moment?

• What is the best part of your job?• What was your favorite subject when you were in 7th

grade?

Interacting with Teen Girls

• Try to get every girl involved in some part of your discussions and activities

• Be excited about the activities, your energy will directly impact them

• Be prepared to listen. Don’t interrupt. Ask more questions!

• Let girls have a choice as much as possible• When you don’t know an answer, say so. Work together to find out the answer

Page 8: M AY 8 TH 2015 C OLORADO C ONVENTION C ENTER 700 14 TH S TREET D ENVER, CO 80202 7:15 AM TO 2:30 PM GESTEM 2015 Volunteer Presenter Training Presentation

Engage the Students

• www.Engineeryourlife.org• “Girls will respond to engineering if it’s presented as creative,

enjoyable, personally fulfilling, and making a difference in the lives of others. Young women also react positively to personal stories about what life is like as an engineer. If you’re able to convey your own personal excitement about engineering and can communicate what life and work are like as an engineer, you’ll have an engaged and curious audience of young women.”

• Engineering Messages “Tip Sheet” from www.EngineerMessages.org• Show, Don’t Tell• Use Multiple Media• Be Consistent• Learn from Others• Collect Impact Data

Change the Conversation

• The National Academy of Engineering (NAE) tested messages to promote a more positive image of engineering. The most appealing messages are:Engineers make a world of difference.

From new farming equipment and safer drinking water to electric cars and faster microchips, engineers use their knowledge to improve people's lives in meaningful ways.

Engineers are creative problem-solvers. They have a vision for how something should work, and are dedicated to making it better, faster or more efficient.

Engineers help shape the future. They use the latest science, tools and technology to bring ideas to life.

Engineering is essential to our health, happiness and safety. From the grandest skyscrapers to microscopic medical devices, it is impossible to imagine life without engineering.

Emergencies

IN CASE OF EMERGENCY AT THE EVENT

If you have an emergency, such as a medical issue, security, etc. you should take the following actions, and ONLY the following actions, IN THIS ORDER:

DO NOT CALL 911 – contact Security at 303-228-8030.  The Convention Center has in-house assistance and they need to be in contact with the 911 personnel in order to get help to the correct location and avoid confusion.

1.      Notify security or the event manager if they are in the area.  If no Center management is in the area, pick up a house phone (located in the lobbies and throughout the facility).  Ask for Security or call them directly at 88030 or 200 (these numbers will be written on the house phones).  Tell them it is an emergency.  If Security needs 911, they will call.

2.      Tell Security where you are, who you are, and what your emergency is in a calm manner.  Try to stay with the situation until Security arrives (except in case of fire).  Center personnel will direct us as to how to handle the situation.

3.      Notify the GESTEM Registration Desk of your actions.  Send someone else while you are contacting Security.
