Not all playgrounds, parks are well maintainedNot all playgrounds, parks are well maintainedBy Our Staff Reporter

There are a number of playgrounds and parks in Ashok Nagar and K. K. Nagar. While some are maintained well and are popular there are others which lack enough facilities for visitorswho include senior citizens and children. Some are under renovation.

Though this playground in 1st Sector is under renovation, visitors continue to frequent itas the gates remain open and the Corporation has not put up a ‘no entry’ board.

However, an enthusiastic resident has tied a small cardboard to the gate with an appealto visitors to avoid using the walkers’ path which is being relaid.

Many of the benches for visitors in this park in 10th Sector are damaged and need to bereplaced. But the play equipment is in fairly good condition.

There is a playground adjoining the park on which boys play cricket andother games.

A handwritten sign near the swings in this playground in 11th Sector Park warns that theyare to be used only by ‘LKG and UKG students’ but visitors complain that grownups too

sit on them with the result the chains snap under their weight.

Residents said that this park in 12th Sector is convenient for walkers but most of the playequipment is in broken condition.

Residents of Raghav Reddy Colony, Jafferkhanpet have stopped taking their children tothe playground in the colony after a public convenience was constructed there recently.

They appealed to Corporation officials to shift the play area away from the publicconvenience. But this has not deterred children from the anganwadi center on the

playground from using the play equipment.

Residents complain that garbage is burnt in the play area in the park in 8th Sector andplay equipment is in bad condition.

In 1946, instead of going to Oxford to study English, my youngerbrother Kanthu and I packed our bags and arrived in Madras. I joinedthe Madras Christian College School, then functioning in LinghiChetty Street, George Town.

It was from the terrace of our rented house in Triplicane that Isaw, for the first time, enormous kites battling in the skies forsupremacy of space. As permissible in all wars, a philosophyendorsed by Messrs Hitler, Stalin and finally blessed by Truman, thesky hawks with the deadliest ‘maanja’ always won the match. Manya time, the glass-powered cutting-threads cut not only the innocentrival’s thread but his throat too.

Under Section 71(X14) of Madras City Police Act of 1888, enactedby the British, made kite flying an offence in the city with a fineliability of the then ransom amount of Rs. 250 (which today couldbe computed as equivalent to Rs. 2,00,000) or three months in thecooler. And our freedom fighters called the sovereign a ‘Bad Fellow’!

Along with the growth of indigenous but super industries like arm-farms, money printing presses and RDX toys, many of our billionplus free people have a nagging respect for the “Oh! The good olddays!” when kitology was confined to sky-wars with unlethal stringsand the worst one could be punished with was a 250 fine or threemonths of free board under the government.

It is time for Amma to amend the City Police Act to totally bankite flying in Tamilnadu with any violation being visited with theminimum of 10 years R.I. In the case of this aerial aggression bymanjaa-missile resulting in death, life imprisonment must be man-datory.

May Rajkumar, last month’s maanja victim in Naduvankarai, bethe saviour of armourless bike- riders not only in this city butthroughout India, for which our handsome Central Law Ministershould also act fast and bring a law since, otherwise, Kejriwal woulduse this as a whip hand for a flog session.
