Lauraine Leblanc SCENEEDITOR K arolina Lux – burlesque artist, musician, actress, singer, for- mer HSU student and March- ing Lumberjack – brings her unique style of Belly-esque fusion dance home to the Redwood Coast Bellydance Fes- tival Oct. 5 and 6. Lux first came to Arcata in 2005 to attend HSU, the college she chose specifically because dancer Shoshanna was on faculty. While Lux moved on to attend other colleges, she consid- ers HSU her alma mater and credits Shoshanna as her mentor in dance. Lux grew up in the Bay area, study- ing voice and dance in the hopes of a career in musical theater. She learned Broadway-style jazz dance, modern and ballet, but also made forays into hip hop and world dance. Under Shoshanna’s wing, Lux learned classical styles of bellydance. Lux says Shoshanna encourages her students to study source cultures and music, to really study and delve into other styles of dance, advice which Lux took to heart. However, Lux is more than just a dancer; she also came to Arcata with a trumpet. While at HSU, she was a Marching Lumberjack “all the way,” she says. One day, a friend challenged her to play trumpet while bellydanc- ing. Lux found this fusion to be more easily accommodated by a vaudeville style, and began developing her signa- ture Belly-esque fusion. Later, in Portland, Lux found not as many opportunities to dance in Middle Eastern restaurants as there were on- stage with rock bands and began col- laborating with Vagabond Opera. At their June performance in Arcata, Lux wowed the crowd by performing the “Quadratic Formula Song,” composed for her by band- leader Eric Stern, in which she sings, plays trumpet AND does a burlesque dance. Lux has also expanded her vaudevillian act to include clowning which, she admits, comes naturally to her. “I am an utter, complete over-the-top ham,” she confesses. In work- shops, when instructors exhort- ed other participants to up their energy, they instructed Lux to tone it down. She didn’t, and decided instead to play to her strengths. Lux teaches a work- shop and performs at the Redwood Coast Belly- dance Festival. Catch up with Lux at karolinabelly- dance.com. Welcome to the first

Union. As you know, the

Union includes the com-

Arcata Eye and McKin-

union with the Northern

Humboldt community.

The mission of the Mad

River Union is to inform,

entertain and empower

readers to make educated

choices via in-depth com-

munity journalism. That

includes bold coverage

of issues, events, politics,

people, crime and every-

thing else of interest.

As with the previous

newspapers, we’ll speak

truth to power, ask difficult

questions and hold our

leaders and institutions to

their commitments.The Union will also

provide a platform for

citizens to address issues

of concern, the only re-

quirements being attri-

bution and conciseness.

The Union consists of

an experienced, able and

newly re-enthused staff

aided by a constellation

of weekly volunteers and

a larger galaxy of com-

munity reader-support-

ers. We invite and re-

quire your participation

on all levels – with sub-

scriptions, advertising,

tips, letters and criticism.

While we’re relatively

pleased with our first edi-

tion, it is only a beginning.

Over time, the Union’s

look and feel will evolve,

its content will grow and

mature and the paper will

expand to all the other

platforms that optimize

content delivery in our

modern age – website (go-
