YKNO HOLDS BARRED

By M.A. SADANANDDream come true!I had been a dreamer all my life but the one that I had

at sunrise in my palatial house ‘Padmalayam’ in the villagein Kannur was so surreal that I unreservedly rejected it asunhappenable but, with a hope that if Hitler could go mad,my mother, made of sterner stuff than Hitler’s composi-tion, could brave the journey from Nairobi to somewherein India across the Arabian sea and reach us. This was thedream that catapulted me from bed.

For aeleven-year old, bed is heaven until disturbed.Mother had set sail in a country craft from Africa with

my younger brother who was about 8, as steamers werebusy carting war materials and soldiers and the hope ofescape from Africa was dwindling day by day. Mother’sbravery was seconded by father whom his British bosseswould not let go when Hitler was hitting them badly forsixes. So Amma and Kanthu, my brave brother, trustedwind power and sailed India wards reaching Kathiawar inGujarat after nearly a month. Two huge tins of her specialheavenly biscuits brought for her three children cooped upin Kannur saved the two from starvation as the sail boathad provision for less than 15 days only.

From Kathiawar it was cattle class train to Bombay anda repeat class from Bombay to Madras from where mothertelegraphed us which reached us through the telegram-runner Nambiar ten minutes after mother and brotherreached home to a teary welcome by us all.

That night the four children and mother cried, cried andcried, and pledged never to separate from each other.

In that family of father, mother and four children, I, at81, am the sole survivor now. I here by declare a war onwars.

Its founder Dr. Jayashree said that joints are indispensablein our bones and are an integral part of our system. Freedomand flexibility to move is perhaps the most important aspectof the body.

With age, the space between the bones and joints reduce asthe lubrication begins to dry up. This leads to compressions onthe nerves and the blood vessels passing to both the sidescausing chronic and acute pain depending on the level ofcompression and location of the nerves. If left uncared for, itcan lead to severe complications and inhibit even daily activi-ties like walking, lifting, moving or even sleeping in certainangles.

Allopathic intervention in extreme cases includes surgicalintervention and lifelong intake of pain killers which causechronic side effects.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Portion of walkers’ path inCorporation park caves in

Sir, The entire width of a 10 foot-stretch ofthe walkers’ path in the Corporation Parkadjoining Vidyodaya School, T. Nagar caved ina couple of weeks ago. It is yet to be repaired.

Regular walkers are unable to use the path.I hope the concerned authorities take imme-

diate action to restore the path. – S.Balamurugan, Prakasam 1st Street,T. Nagar

An act of nobilitySir, I am a senior citizen fending for myself and residing on 7th Avenue,

Ashok Nagar. On Oct. 15 at about 9.30 p.m, after making some purchases, I was

struggling along Murthy Street on the way back home with 3 heavybags. It had been raining heavily and roads were wet and slippery.Looking at my plight, a gentleman stopped his car and offered to dropme home. He was with his wife and I was initially reluctant and evensuspicious. He convinced me that his intention was only to help andsafely dropped me home.

Even before I could thank him and get his number or invite him home,he just smiled and drove off. I just want to thank him and goodSamaritans like him through your paper. – C.N. Madhava Rao,Ashok Nagar.

Coconut tree on Natesan Roadjunction poses danger

Sir, The trunk of a tall coconut tree at thejunction of Dr. Natesan Road and J.S. Kan-nappar Street (Ashok Nagar) is leaning to-wards the road. Coconuts from it often fall onthe road, posing a danger to road users. I had anarrow escape recently when a coconut felljust a few inches away from me while I waspassing by. I request the concerned authoritiesto visit the spot and, if possible, cut down thetree. – K. Alavandar, Ashok Nagar

Aadhar processing should be handedback to UIDAI

Sir, This refers to the recent announcement in the media regardingsetting up of Aadhaar camps by the Department of Census Operationsin Chennai and elsewhere in the State to cover the uncovered popula-tion under the scheme.

It must be stated that so long as the enrolment was done by theUnique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), its original visionary, through the nationalized banks and other agencies, it was a verysmooth affair. Once it was made known by the erstwhile dispensationat the Centre that Aadhaar card was must to avail of the benefits undervarious schemes of the government, particularly the LPG subsidy, allhell broke loose and there was panic among the public who ran helter-skelter to obtain the Aadhaar cards. It was during this time that theCensus Department took over the issue of Aadhaar cards based on theNational Population Register. There was a total pell-mell at all campshurriedly set up the Census Department in association with the civicbody in the city. It was organized without proper planning and trainingto the staff and volunteers. No information was furnished at thecenters which were managed by outside agencies that were notproperly trained in the mechanisms. Even those who had obtainedUIDAI-enabled cards were asked to enroll afresh. Many of the Aadhaarcards printed had factual errors and many were without correctaddress and were lying in post offices. A few post offices had to announcein the newspapers, calling upon the applicants to pick up the cards aftershowing identity proof. The citizens heaved a sigh of relief after theintervention of the Apex Court which ruled that Aadhaar card shouldnot be made mandatory to avail benefits of government schemes. Iwonder why again the Department is starting this exercise all overagain. The best way to go is to hand over the project back to UIDAIwhich should implement the scheme like it had accomplished earliersuccessfully. – V.S. Jayaraman, 31, Motilal Street, T. Nagar

MAMBALAM TIMES: Ashok Nagar - K.K.Nagar Edition

By Dr. Vasumathy VedanthamThere is epidemic of conjunc-

tivitis in Chennai since the re-cent rains. It is commonlyknown as ‘Madras Eye’.

Also called as pink eye, it isan inflammation of the con-junctiva (the outermost layerof the eye and the inner surfaceof the eyelids). It is commonlydue to an infection (usually vi-ral, but sometimes bacterial)or an allergic reaction.

An onset of sore throat and/or common cold along with red-ness in the eye is an indicationof conjunctivitis. In its ad-vanced state, symptoms in-clude excessive watering anditching.

Typically, symptoms de-velop first in one eye, but mayspread to the other eye within2-5 days.

Bacterial conjunctivitis alsoproduces a yellowish dischar-ge that may cause the lids tostick together, especially aftersleep.

Often conjunctivitis is mis-read by patients as irritationcaused by a foreign body in theeye.

Prevention and treatment:

1. Hygiene: The best effec-tive prevention is hygiene andnot rubbing the eyes by in-fected hands.

It spreads only when objectstouched by the infected personsuch as towels, soap, doorknobs, keys, remote controls, laptops, keyboards etc., areused by others.

Infected persons should nottouch their eye and preferablywear goggles to prevent theitch to touch/rub the eyes andalso to reduce glare. It is a myththat Madras Eye spreads if aninfected person looks at an-other person!

2. Quarantine: In addition, patients should stay awayfrom crowds and work to mini-mize spread of the infection. Itis better not to send affectedchildren to the schools.

3.) Eye check-up: Patientsshould not self-medicate andsee an eye doctor immediatelyas certain cases lead to cor-neal involvement and someother serious vision threaten-ing causes.

4.) Healthy foods: Eatingbrightly coloured fruits andvegetables helps to build im-

munity and prevents infec-tion.
