Cruise Ship
in Lyttelton Europa in Port Last Week
As the second anniversary of
February 22 nears, it was heart
warming to observe the
Europa cruise ship come into
port last week. Such a visit
provided local residents a small
glimpse into how life in the
port used to be just a few short
years ago. For this particular
cruise ship the visit is of note
worthy interest, as the last visit
was on February 22nd 2011.
Glad to see they had an
uneventful visit to Lyttelton
this time around. Article and Image:

720 Days: Port-a-Loos Are Gone Hip Hip Horray
Who would have ever thought we would be celebrating so much for the return of the Lyttelton
public toilets? Almost two years to the date that they were put out of action, the public
facilities at the Lyttelton Harbour Information Centre building are re-opening. A delighted Ian
Jackson from the Christchurch City Council came to tell staff at the Lyttelton Harbour
Information Centre the good news. The much dreaded Port-a-Loos have been taken away, and
never to return again, we hope.
Thank you to all the businesses and the Lyttelton Library for allowing the public to use your
premises while we have all endured this long wait.
Thank you to Leslie’s Bookshop for assisting the many visitors who searched for this basic
function in our township. The spot light now turns to Governors Bay were the public eagerly
awaits the re-opening of the deluxe toilet at the Allendale Domain.

Brothels in Lyttelton What is the latest news?
On Monday the 25th February, the Brothels Bylaw Hearings Panel will meet again to discuss the new
Bylaw. In December, the Christchurch City Council heard the recommendations of the Hearing Panel, which
included not having Lyttelton as a designated area for commercially run brothels. The Hearing Panel further
recommended that all commercial brothels be located within the Four Avenues.
Christchurch City Council has requested that the Panel deliberate again
specifically about adding Lyttelton back into the mix of places
where commercial brothels should be allowed to open.
If you are opposed to Lyttelton township being nominated as an area suitable for large scale brothels to set
up and do business, now would be a good time to get those emails and letters going into the Hearing Panel
and the Christchurch City Council in order to remind them of your views on locating commercial brothels in
our small town.
While I am sure that we all wish Claudia Reid the best with her health, as far as we can tell since Claudia is ill, we have no real
representation within Council. We need to take it upon ourselves to have our voices heard by both the Council and the Community
Board on this topic. The Community Board is meeting this Thursday at 1.30 pm in their new offices on London Street. You can call or
email Liz Carter at [email protected] or call 941-5682 if you would like to have a few minutes to speak to the Community Board
about this issue or just show up to let them know. The email addresses for the Panel are:

As many of you will be aware Solid Energy, the principal behind BioDiesel New Zealand
Limited, announced their intention to sell the subsidiary company in 2012. Stark Bros and
Ocean Fisheries were foundation customers in 2007 and remained strong supporters of BioDiesel New Zealand Limited, using
BioGold blended products exclusively in our diesel vehicles and fishing boats. We also transported and stored various products for

Missed Ground’s Catering? Well the Girls are Back
Almost two years on from that fateful day in February 2011 it is
great to see Jenny Garing happy and excited again. With time to
think, and business insurance matters sorted, Jenny has
reinvented Ground. It is set to flourish focusing on the things
that Jenny has always been passionate about.
You will be pleased to know that Ground has taken out the full
time lease of the kitchen at the Naval Point Club and from this
base Jenny is going to re-establish the Ground catering business,
continue cooking for the Farmers Market stall, host cooking
classes and supply other businesses wholesale with her well
established spice ranges, dips and smoked products.
Joining Jenny will be Flic. Some of you will remember Flic from
pre earthquake time. Flic had ventured off to try something new,
that didn’t quite work so she’s delighted to be back in Lyttelton
again working with Jenny and Ground once again.
The pair are enjoying creating food together again. “We are also
exploring working with quite a few new outlets” Jenny said.
“Remember our smoked chicken and smoked salmon? They will
be able to be purchased from the new deli in Lyttelton”. This
new deli is the brain child of Glen Harris and Andrew Turner.
Some of Ground’s products are already stocked locally by
Harbour Co-Op and they have requests from Cooper and Co plus
other outlets in Christchurch. The team have also taken over the
Choice take home food range developed by James Sinclair. This will soon be available from the new deli.
Catering will comprise of two ranges. The specialised range that Ground used to do plus the Choice range. This will offer you price
competitive options for all budgets. Food for special occasions, business lunches, afternoon teas or what ever you desire will be
available, you just need to call to discuss your options.
As the business gets back to full swing you will also see more options for cooking classes and workshops. Keep an eye out for
things in the Lyttelton Harbour Review.
Don’t forget that if you want to see Jenny or Flic in person they will be at the Lyttelton Farmers Market each week. Another added
bonus is Jenny is writing a column for Zest, a Press publication. Jenny one of the food experts, so if you have a foodie question
you can email her and she will answer it for you. Talking with Jenny she feels relaxed and excited about the business ramping up
again. “This time it is more reflective of my needs and passions, and it will compliment a balanced lifestyle” she said.

Suburban Centres Programme Lyttelton’s Civic Square: Creating a Civic Square for Lyttelton, Together
During development of the Lyttelton Master Plan, the Lyttelton community asked for a new civic square. The site, formerly
occupied by Ground Café, the Albion Hotel and the Borough Council Offices, has been purchased by Christchurch City Council for
this purpose.
The Lyttelton/Mt Herbert Community Board now wants your ideas on what you want to see and use in the square.
Features you asked for in the Master Plan included an imaginative playground, water play, public toilets, the relocated cenotaph
and a day-lit section of historic barrel storm water drain. Please pop in any time to the following drop-in sessions to find out more
about the site, speak with Council staff and tell us your ideas.
Drop-in sessions will be held at the former supermarket site, 27 London Street, Lyttelton:
Saturday, 2 March 2013 from 10am - 2.00pm; and
Tuesday, 5 March 2013 from 4.30pm - 7.00pm
A feedback form and project information will also be available online at www.ccc.govt.nz/haveyoursay from 1 March 2013 to 18

Live at the Point This popular summer event comes to a close this weekend. So make the most of the last live performance for the season and head
over to Diamond Harbour this Sunday from 1.00pm. Check out the posters toward the rear of the Lyttelton Review for more details.
St John News As reported in the last edition of the 'Lyttelton Harbour Review' St John Lyttelton has received a very
positive response to our series of five free first aid courses for our community with a very
representative cross section of the harbour basin communities represented and a total of 49 First Aid -
Level One certificates presented. This has to be good news for the various communities represented.
As a result of our certificate presentation evening held at the Ambulance Station on Monday 4
February we had three of the recent course attendees join with our volunteer ambulance team for
training on the Thursday evening that involved a joint training exercise with the Lyttelton Volunteer
Fire Service on board the large fishing vessel 'Irvinga' that is currently berthed in port awaiting
refurbishment by its owners. We want to thank the owners, Independent Fisheries Limited, for the use
of their ship for this very important ship familiarisation training.
We are still looking to recruit volunteers from our community to help provide a more responsive and
effective emergency ambulance first response capability for the harbour basin communities. We have
had seven applications to become members of our volunteer team as a result of our recent courses
and of course we would like to have more.
If you are 18 years or older, are reasonably fit and healthy and have time to give back to your community through St John we are
very keen to hear from you. If you are interested in joining or would like more information on St John and its activities in your
community then please contact us through Pete Dawson on 021 334 381 or 03 318 0859 or via e-mail at [email protected] for
volunteer membership application forms or more information.
With March rapidly approaching it is time to be thinking about renewal of subscriptions for our St John Supporter scheme.
Reminder notices for all of our current supporter scheme subscribers will be mailed out soon. We hope that all of our current
supporters will continue to support us for the 2013-14 subscription year.
The annual subscription to become a St John Supporter is $40.00 [inclusive GST] per individual or $55.00 [including GST] per
dependent family resident in the same household. Membership of the scheme provides free emergency ambulance treatment and
transport to a medical facility for each year subscriptions are maintained. The annual subscription for the supporter scheme is less
than the current user part charge that St John must charge for a single ambulance medical emergency call out and provides cover
anywhere in New Zealand. Further information on the St John Supporter Scheme can be found on our website at
www.stjohn.org.nz. Take care and keep safe.

plenty to share In Lyttelton so many residents grow vegetables; or have fruit trees literally dripping with produce. Plenty to Share is about sharing any
excess produce with the community. So if your lemon tree is yellow with goodness and you can’t keep up with making lemon curd, bring
those surplus fruits down to the organisers, where every Saturday the swapping of produce is well underway in Lyttelton on the corner of
London and Canterbury Street; and also in Diamond Harbour on a Saturday morning at the village centre. If there is something on the
Plenty to Share table that you would like to take home, then you are warmly invited to do so.

25 National Champs in Wellington. With the last day of racing blown out, a count back was required to decide the winner. Tristin
Ornsby and crew on "Visions" took the honours with another Naval Point crew, Nick Coultas' "Outnumbered" in second.

Harbour Resilience Project Developing A Food Growing Social Enterprise
Nina Srot from the Harbour Resilience Project writes:
Now the first lines of the story go like this: There is a lovely piece of land in the Whakaroupo harbour, waiting for some pairs of
playful hands to mold it into a nourishing edible paradise. The land is there, waiting for the conversations to be had and for the
relationship to begin. It is the land that used to nourish a part of our harbour, now sitting quietly and patiently waiting.
Now this is the part where perhaps you step into the plot and continue this story.
The backdrop of the story is the Living Springs area. The management of the Living Springs is interested to lend [at no cost] a part of
the area to someone [a group] to develop it into a food growing social enterprise. This could be anything from seeds and seedling
onwards. They are particularly interested in providing space for young growers that are passionate about their call, but struggle to
find an affordable piece of land to start from. This area used to be a horticultural centre back in the 80' but is now just sitting there
covered with grass.
No particular vision of what should happen there has yet been formed, it is all open for discussion.
Worth mentioning is also the fact that there are several interesting market venues right here in the Harbour that would love to see
more local produce come in, for example the Harbour Co-op, Lyttelton Farmers Market and the Diamond Harbour farmers market.
If you think this might be of interest to you or someone you know, please get back to me as soon as possible. I am aiming to get a
group of interested people together in the next couple of weeks and than start conversations with Living Springs as to where this
story goes.
Nga mihi,
Nina can be contacted on [email protected] or phone 03 328 9243
Time Bank Update
Current membership is 450 with an average total of about 100 trades taking place each month. October saw a successful “Spring
Gardening Series” with workshops available in a range of gardening activities from hedgerow foraging to seed sowing.
In November the Gruffalo party was held at Lyttelton West School. Kids from across Lyttelton enjoyed story telling from Librarians,
Gruffalo activities and even Gruffalo themed food and drink. Organisation and costs for this were shared between the Time Bank
and the school with timebankers contributing to the event’s creation.
For the first time many of the Festival of Walking walks were eligible to be paid for in time credits; this offer was popular with time
bankers, offering a great alternative way to spend their credits.
Planning took place to hold the annual large Time Bank Christmas Share and Swap activity on the grassy – however, sadly the event
had to be postponed due to southerly weather! The event had attracted time bankers and organisations to run about 20 different
activities. Planning is now underway to recreate this event in early March.

LIFT Library Update The LIFT Library is expanding again! Just as an order I had made from Living Economies arrived, Jeremy Agar, representing CAFCA
[Campaign Against Foreign Control of Aotearoa], brought me another large bag of new books. So I made a selection of the ones I
thought would appeal to some of you. Like the Living Economies ones, and those contributed by locals, they are on long term loan.
Here is some information on them – just taken from the blurbs and introductions. I wish I had time to read them all!
The Body Hunters: Testing New Drugs on the World’s Poorest Patients 2006 Sonia Shah
“Eye-opening account offers an inside look into how the pharmaceutical industry, aided and abetted by FDA policies, carries out
ethically problematic research in developing countries.” Ruth Macklin, Professor of bioethics, Albert Einstein College of Medicine
Effective Strategies in Confronting Transnational Corporations 2003 Abdul Aziz Choudry
Five case studies of struggles of different sectors against TNCs in the Asia-Pacific region. All the studies ‘highlight the importance of
mass education, information dissemination and community organising.’ Most of them also ‘point to the usefulness of bringing
pressure to bear on TNC’ and government through media attention, particularly in their involvement of international media.’
No Left Turn: The Distortion of NZ’s History by Greed, Bigotry and Right-Wing Politics 2007 Chris Trotter
‘The way some histories tell it, Europeans came to New Zealand keen to establish a little Britain in the South Seas.’ Not so, says
Trotter. Most 19th
century immigrants wanted something better than the misery and oppression of the world they had left, and
Trotter reveals just how close they and their descendants came to building a new one.
Rescuing the New Zealand Economy: What Went Wrong and How we Can Fix It 2008 Bryan Gould
This book looks beyond the recent, depressing past to a more optimistic vision for the future. Drawing on the experience of other
Western democracies that have been far more economically successful than New Zealand, he outlines mainstream, well-tested
ways for restoring productivity and controlling inflation without stifling economic growth.
Rocks and Hard Places: The Globalization of Mining 2007 Roger Moody
The world of international mining is changing rapidly. Mining corporations are encroaching on more and more green field sites in
Africa, the Asia-Pacific and Latin America, to serve ever-expanding global industries. Moody shows that large-scale mining imposes
a heavy toll on local communities, on their fragile economies and ways of life, as well as the environment. The book concludes with
urgent proposals to check the role of multinationals in a sector that has always been at the core of resource exploitation.
Seeds of Distrust: The Story of a GE Cover-Up 2002 Nicky Hager
In November 2000 – in the middle of the Royal Commission on genetic engineering – the Government learned that a shipment of
GE contaminated sweet corn seeds had been planted in three regions of New Zealand. Imposing strict secrecy, Prime Minister
Helen Clark took control of the issue and said that the crops must be pulled out. Then the big business lobbying began. Helen
Clark’s Government did a U-turn: the contaminated crops, including thousands of GE sweet corn plants, were allowed to spread
their pollen and then be harvested for sale in New Zealand and overseas. The Government misled the Royal Commission members
about the incident. It is a story about the anti-democratic influence of big business, political expediency, abuse of power,
manipulation of the news media and misleading a Royal Commission. Above all, it is about a serious breach of trust by the very
people who had been saying ‘trust us’ over genetic engineering in New Zealand.
Today’s quote is from Sharon Beders’ book: Suiting Themselves: How Corporations Drive the Global Agenda:
“Globalization is about making every country in the world conform to neo-conservative American prescriptions in
macro-economic management, taxation principles, social policy, and the laws and practices governing employment
while opening their markets to American investors” - John M. Legge. Both John Legge and Sharon Beder are
Australians. Reminds you of the TPPA situation, doesn’t it.

Peacock in Lyttelton Has anyone lost a peacock in Lyttelton? Anyone know anyone who wants a peacock? One was picked up from behind the Police
Station Monday 4th Feb and it's holidaying at Animal Control in Bromley! Wings clipped so won't fly much! Needs an owner soon so
call Christchurch City Council on 03 941 8999 if it's yours or interested in making it so!
Oops You can’t trust everything you find on the internet. Last week the Lyttelton Review advertised that Devilish Mary were playing at
Godley Cafe [found on the mukuna.co.nz web site]. Transpires that this event was part of the SPRIG music events calendar held on
the old Godley House site over the past few months. SPRIG are a local voluntary community group and have been the driving force
behind the very successful Live at the Point and Sculpture on the Point events. Naturally SPRIG are dismayed that this error
continues to appear on the mukuna.co.nz. So credit where credit is due: SPRIG are the event organisers and the old Godley House
site is the location for these fabulous events.
CanCERN Recyle, ReUse, Relocate Project CanCERN’s Recycle, Re-use, Relocate Project is now underway. This means that if you are a community group or organisation you
can access recycled materials from the Residential Red Zone through the simple process.
The rules:
1. Items must be salvageable
2. Requests for items must be for the good of the community
3. Items must be used immediately as there are no storage facilities
Contractors will not get: Paint, fencing, roofing or plants.
At this early stage when we are relying on contractors, we need groups to realistic about the size of requests and to allow time for
the materials to be sourced.
If you are a community group or organisation and want to request items, please fill in the online form:
www.cancern.org.nz → supporVng a community → R.R.R → fill out the on-line form
If you want to know more about our next steps or are interested in being part of a community salvage team; or if you can help with
larger storage - land big enough for a football sized shed or an empty football sized shed, please contact [email protected].

Port Hills Rock Stabilisation - Bridal Path Track North – Area 1 & 2 ROCK SCALING 18th February – 18th March 2013
Rock stabilisation work will be carried out above the Bridal Path Track North - Area 1 and Area 2 during February & March - weekdays only. The timeframe may be subject to change but will be advised.
You may hear the sound of low-velocity explosives and drilling during this work.
Nearby residents have been contacted to inform them about the work.
Any further questions for Council officers can be directed to [email protected].
Please note that the track is currently closed to members of the public and other unauthorised personnel, and this will continue through this work. Due to the multiple hazards that are present on this site, we may have some “exclusion zones” around the individual work sites.
We look forward to your support through this part of the earthquake remediation works.
Any queries please contact CCC on 03 941-8999.
