Tommy Chang’s Returns An Atmospheric Gem
Lyttelton’s bar and entertainment scene continues to expand. The rustic doors of Tommy Chang’s
have opened once again. Open Wednesday to Sunday, it is the perfect little nook for a drink and a
shared plate. Run by a partnership between Dave and Michael, Tommy Chang’s is that blend of hip
and steady hand.
Tommy Chang’s is an experiment in the making really and things will evolve as the new crew learn
the business. One of the new crew is Leah Rothwell. Leah tells the ever so familiar story of arriving in
Lyttelton very recently, and then everything falling into place. Originating from Sydney she had been
back packing around New Zealand and stumbled upon Lyttelton literally weeks ago, met Dave at the
bar and the next thing she and her partner have a place to live and she has the job of running the
food side of the business.
Leah has been in hospitality for fifteen years and comes from a family where food preparation has
been an important part of life. This is the first time in her career that she has been given the
opportunity to run the kitchen. “It is really exciting to be here in Lyttelton and getting the
opportunity to run the kitchen, which would never have happened in Sydney” she said.
Leah is looking forward to all the challenges the job will bring. Her small plates will evolve just like everything at the bar. Today she
has been baking an interesting mix of potato and fennel to be accompanied by grapefruit. She also has a variety of homemade dips
and chicken liver pate. Plates are very reasonably priced from $8.50.
Live music will also feature at this cosy venue. Michael is looking after that side of the business. No doubt this venue will prove
popular with many Christchurch and local musicians who are looking for an intimate and atmospheric location.
Open Wednesday to Sunday, from 4pm until late.

Pā Kids of Rāpaki Te Karaka Reports
Do you know that Ngai Tahu have a bi monthly magazine called
Te Karaka? It is a great way to keep up with interesting stories from
Ngai Tahu and more specifically about interesting happenings and
people around our harbour. A great example of this is the current
month’s story on the Pa Kids by Phil Tumataroa:
In a garage in the small sea-side community of Rāpaki, the Pā Kids
are making sweet music. This group of six talented Ngāi Tahu
tamariki and rangatahi have taken over their aunty’s basement
garage and turned it into a practice room. Every week for the past
ten months they have been learning to play and sing together.
Kerepeti Paraone and brother Reihana Paraone, both talented self-taught musicians who play just about anything they pick up,
provided the impetus for the Pā Kids. They offered music lessons to brother Waiariki sister Hineamaru, and cousins Paratene
Takurua, Anaru Takurua, and Justice Arahanga-Pryor; all aged between 12 and 15 years.
The lessons got everyone excited about the idea of a band and Pā Kids were born. All share a passion for kapa haka and performing,
but now Paratene plays a handy lead guitar, Anaru more than keeps up on bass, Justice belts out tunes on the saxophone and
Waiariki and Hineamaru take care of the vocals – while Kerepeti opts to play the drums and a collection of other instruments.
Only Justice lives outside Rāpaki, but she travels every week to rehearse and spends nearly every weekend at the bay. “We’re all
from the pā – hence the name,” says Kerepeti. “And we’re all proud of where we come from – it’s a whānau affair.” The band has a
growing repertoire of old school and modern songs and has played five gigs to date, including Hui-ā-Iwi and the opening of
Maahunui II, the new wharenui at Tuahiwi.
Hineamaru reckons the highlight for her so far was seeing the kaumātua at Hui-ā-Iwi on their feet and dancing to their music. For
Waiariki, it’s the buzz of performing in front of people and the confidence it’s building in him.
The Pā Kids are motivated and committed. In six months they plan to have enough songs to perform three 60-minute sets of covers
and original music – surely enough to tire out the most able kaumātua!

Fire Brigade Update Thank you to Russ Barron, Brigade Secretary, for providing us with an update on the Lyttelton Volunteer Fire Brigade building site
on London Street:
As some of you may have noticed over the past three weeks work has been progressing on the Lyttelton fire brigade site. No it’s
not the start on the new building, but the placement of foundation structures to allow the brigade to move [yet again] back on to
the site which will allow the trucks to be parked under cover. It is anticipated that we will be on site until the new building is two
thirds finished when we will move in temporarily until the last third is finished, and then we will be at home.
This week we will start the move by moving our hall up on to site followed by some of the containers once we have power on site
we will then move the watch room, locker room and toilet block and the trucks onto site. Once the containers are in place the
temp roof to cover the trucks will be installed. Another step forward in getting back to normal.
We trust that the Lyttelton community had a great Christmas and new year break and please remember if you see smoke in them
thar’ hills or anywhere in the harbour basin area call 111 immediately it is better to be safe than sorry especially in the hot
weather.
Don’t forget if you see the fire truck parked in London Street during the Saturday Farmers Market, we are there to answer any
questions you may have about the brigade and its equipment, as well as we also have book on sale, come down and meet the
team.
Have a fire safe summer

Lyttelton Volunteer Fire Brigade
The Brigade Official Fundraising Book Late last year the Lyttelton Volunteer Fire Brigade launched their fundraising
book “The Brigade” – the untold story of the men and women of the Lyttelton
Volunteer Fire Brigade who found themselves at the very centre of disaster
following the February 2011 earthquake sequence.
This book is a raw and honest insight into the amazing, emotional and personal
stories from the Lyttelton Volunteer Fire Brigade during February 2011.
The professionally presented book is a celebration of volunteer spirit and
dedication, plus so much more.
It is an insight into the remarkable skills a community has within it, the generosity of local employers and the gratitude of a
community. A story that might not otherwise have been told.
The Brigade is another snap shot into this wonderful community of Lyttelton, and deserves a place on everyone’s bookshelf. The
Brigade is available for sale $40 from Coastal Living, Leslies Bookshop, Portico or online at www.thebrigade.org

Summer of Riesling: Wine Tasting Roots celebrates the Summer of Riesling with Wine Writer Jo Burzynska
Roots Restaurant in Lyttelton is teaming up with respected local wine writer, author and Riesling aficionado, Jo
Burzynska to offer a tasting of the some of the country’s most exciting Rieslings paired with dishes created
from the freshest local produce. This celebration of the Summer of Riesling starts at 6pm on Friday 15
February.
Jo will be hosting a tasting exploring the many intriguing faces of Riesling and its versatility with food, featuring a wide selection of
styles paired with canapé’s created by Roots’ chef, Giulio Sturla. As some of the greatest Rieslings today come from winegrowers
who embrace organic principles, Jo’s selection also reflects the restaurant’s philosophy of using the most naturally produced
ingredients. There is then the option to stay on for a further Riesling-themed degustation.
The Summer of Riesling is a worldwide movement which encourages the consumption, discussion and enjoyment of Riesling. It’s
about having fun, enjoying great wine and not taking ourselves too seriously. The movement began in 2008 when Paul Grieco from
the Terroir Wine Bar in New York decided that only Riesling would be offered by the glass as the white wine pour. And so began the
revolution. The second New Zealand Summer of Riesling kicked off on 1st December 2012 and runs until 28th February 2013, with
Riesling themed events being run across the country. http://www.summerofriesling.co.nz/
Since opening late last year, Roots Restaurant has fast established a reputation for its beautifully executed food with a focus on the
local and the natural. Everything is made from scratch and its products sourced from organic suppliers, small producers,
biodynamic farms and its own backyard. It’s here, in its attractive rear courtyard that (weather permitting) the evening’s tasting
and degustation will be enjoyed. http://rootsrestaurant.co.nz
Wine author, journalist, judge and lecturer, Jo Burzynska is one of New Zealand’s leading wine communicators, penning one of the
country’s most widely read wine columns in the New Zealand Herald’s Viva magazine, as well as contributing to The Press’ Zest
section and specialist wine publications worldwide. She’s the author of Wine Class: all you need to know about wine in New
Zealand (Random House) and runs the Adventures in Wine school. joburzynska.com
So come taste some great local Riesling and what the Canterbury summer has to offer! Jo’s Riesling tasting costs $50 and features
eight wines accompanied by canapés. Those wishing to stay on for the degustation can combine the tasting and dinner – which
includes matched wines - for total price of $110.
Summer of Riesling: 6pm, Friday 15 February.
Booking for the tasting and dinner is essential through Roots: 03 328 7658 or email [email protected]

The ocean swim event option involves swimming either 1, 2 or 3 laps of a triangular swim course set inside the boats at
Corsair Bay. Swimmers will start in one of three waves based on the distance that they will be swimming. Check the web site
for a list of the event distances for each weeks event.
Aquathon Event Option
An aquathon consists of an ocean swim followed by a run. The course at Corsair Bay offers a safe and usually calm swim
course followed by a slightly challenging off road run which includes some short sharp climbs and some gentle flat terrain on
the 4×4 track leading down to Corsair Bay. We offer two options for Aquathon competiors, the short aquathon and long
aquathon. The short aquathon competitors start in the wave with the short swimmers and the long aquathon starts with the
medium ocean swimmers. Check the web site for a list of the distances for each category each week.
SUP Event Option
SUP or Stand Up Paddle Boarding will be featuring for the third summer in the 2013 Surf n Turf series and based on the
growth that the event experienced last summer we have decided to extend the event option to include both a long and short
race option to cater for both the novice paddle boarder and the more experienced that want to challenge themselves over a
longer distance. This year we are going to shorten the lap to bring the SUP course back to a 2.5km loop from Corsair Bay to
Cass Bay returning following the coast line. The short SUP will complete 1 lap while the long SUP will complete either two or
three laps. Check the web site for a list of distances for each week.
Run Only Event Option
The 3km or 5km run event option is ideal for competitors who prefer to keep their feet dry. Competing over the same run
course as the aquathon competitors our run only option is the final event option on the 2013 Surf n Turf program.

Wunderbar: Faster Pussycat Kill Kill and Sixtyniner Tour Friday 1 February | 9.00pm $10 Door Sales R18
Rock ’n’ roll two-piece band Faster Pussycat Kill Kill play at The Wunderbar this coming Friday night to celebrate the release of their
new single 'Sebastian'. Touring with Sixtyniner, a Voodoo Rhythms recording artist and one-man band from Holland. It will be
FPKK’s first national tour since returning from a nine month stint playing shows around Europe.
The new single received Making tracks NZ On Air funding, was produced by Nick Gaffaney [Cairo Knife Fight, Anika Moa Band] and
recorded at Roundhead studios in Auckland.
About Sixtyniner: Underground cartoon flash animator Sixtyniner does it on his own now. Onemanband extravaganza! Rocking the
bulbs out of the lamps, the beer out of your glass and the earwax out of your ears. Making you cry with the pityful songs, laugh
with the funny ones and blush with the dirty ones. Making you want to buy not one CD but 2 so you always have a spare. This is
truly a lot of noise for a one-man band, but it sounds good. [Rolling stoned magazine, 2011]
About Faster Pussycat Kill Kill: Formed in 2008 as a tongue-in-cheek take on the sixties surf and rockabilly sounds made famous by
Wanda Jackson and more recently Brian Setzer, the band is currently moving away from '60s rockabilly to their new original trash
garage pop.

Wunderbar: Mihirangi - Queen of Loops Saturday 2 February | 8.00pm $20 Door Sales R18
Once you experience Mihirangi’s empowering live loop show, you’ll be hooked into her organic earthy vibe and
captivated by her stunning vocal performance. It’s easy to see why they call her, ‘The Queen of Loops’. Mihirangi has
had an expansive journey, having toured for seven years, five times around the globe and performing at more than
50 international festivals. She is a dynamic musician as much of her live acts are in freestyle form, as in, made up on
the spot. She has captured her favourite songs from these experiences in the studio and now, Mihirangi is about to
release these on her much-anticipated second album - ‘Somebody Shake The Tree’.
Beautifully titled ‘Somebody Shake The Tree’, which is exactly what Mihirangi does as an artist, she is celebrating
this album release with a summer tour of New Zealand before heading off shore to share this music again on
international stages. Somebody Shake The Tree’ is a beat-driven tapestry of pure vocal and lyrical percussion, bass
and beat loops with the addition of live drums, guitar, keys and tāonga puoro. From heavy gritty baselines to sweet
symphonic harmonies, Mihirangi’s music will move and inspire you with her universal messages. Though she is an
amazing multi-instrumental performer, what makes Mihirangi unique, is that she doesn't take her self too seriously
and an essential part of her performance is her infectious giggle, fun-loving natural charm and spontaneous
crowd participation.

LIFT Library Update Hope you are able to enjoy this real summer weather we’re having – a good excuse to relax outside, in sun or shade as you
prefer – if you’re not back at work fulltime!
We have three new books I’d like to tell you about. The first book I haven’t had time to read just yet, but it looks like a nice
alternative to other books about corporate leaders looking after their own and their shareholders’ interests ahead of ours:
Eco Barons: The New Heroes of Environmental Activism
2009 Edward Humes
An eco baron is the opposite of a robber baron, using talent, gumption, and wealth not for personal gain but for environmental
good. Humes brings a fluency in complex issues and a love of David-Goliath stories to this illuminating group portrait of embattled
visionaries who ‘are showing the world that nature can be nurtured. [Booklist]
This next one I received as a Christmas present, and fell in love with, so decided to buy it for LIFT Library. The author very
generously gave us a discount, and then autographed it for us: “For Lyttelton, via the LIFT Library”.
Lyttelton: A Love Story
2012 Sarah Lamont
There is a two-page introduction, explaining how and why Sarah came to live and work in Lyttelton, followed by 250 pages of
wonderful photos of Lyttelton and the harbour, both before and after the quakes, occasional texts of explanation [including her
work at the Timeball Station], and poetry she has written. It’s hard to say which moved me most – the photos or the poetry. Sarah
is an artist with both words and pictures, conveying both the facts and the emotions so skilfully. As I moved through the book,
slowly, I often had a smile on my face or tears in my eyes. One poem, my favourite, "Amalgamation", won in a competition that
Canterbury University Press ran last year for poetry in response to the earthquakes. I strongly recommend that you borrow this
treasure – and if you really love it you can still find copies in Portico – if you’re quick – not many left.
And this last book I earned for LIFT by writing a review of over 1000 words for IJCCR (International Journal of Community Currency
Research). This is why I haven’t been reading much else lately!:
Equal Time, Equal Value: Community Currencies and Time Banking in the United States
2012 Ed Collom, Judith N. Lasker, Corinne Kyriacou
Here’s the first paragraph of the review. And I think the main value of the book here will be for those who are wanting to start up
Timebanks, or strengthen existing ones with other methods of managing, or research the system as developed in NZ. “This book
was written to “provide an in-depth investigation of Time Banking in the United States”. All three contributors have been involved
in research into, and worked closely with, various Time Banks in the USA. They chose Time Banking from among the current
systems of community currencies, in the knowledge that Time Banks are the most popular type, are more flexible than others, and
their exchange data are more readily available as they are recorded electronically. However they can be very challenging to launch
and sustain, so it is hoped that the information and examples provided here will enable long-term success in the future. All readers
would gain both knowledge and inspiration from the wealth of well-organised information, though readers with an academic
background in the field of sociology will appreciate more of the detail than the ordinary reader.”
plenty to share In Lyttelton so many residents grow vegetables; or have fruit trees literally dripping with produce. Plenty to Share is about sharing any
excess produce with the community. So if your lemon tree is yellow with goodness and you can’t keep up with making lemon curd, bring
those surplus fruits down to the organisers, where every Saturday the swapping of produce is well underway in Lyttelton on the corner of
London and Canterbury Street; and also in Diamond Harbour on a Saturday morning at the village centre. If there is something on the
Plenty to Share table that you would like to take home, then you are warmly invited to do so.
lyttelton market town Saturday mornings are never dull in Lyttelton! Enjoy the local markets including the Lyttelton Farmers Market for fresh produce, meat,
fish, eggs, honey and yummy baked goods. Head up to the Grassy Art and Craft Market for bargain items or unique art items from
creative local artists. Also be sure to check out the Community Garage Sale located up the driveway behind the swimming pool. The
Garage Sale is a fundraising activity for any Lyttelton community group; so if you’re not buying, feel free to donate items instead.
LIFT Library Film Evening Every Monday Evening
Film Evening, Monday 28 January: MEAT THE TRUTH
The rise in the number of meat-eaters in developing countries is not actually balanced by the number of meat-eaters in developed
countries trending towards vegetarianism. This film raises many issues about the growth of the meat industry. Here are just two
points:
 18% of global greenhouse gases are caused by livestock farming;
7kg of crop feed (soy, corn etc) is needed to make 1kg of beef, preventing that land area from producing vegetables and fruits,
which are more nutritious for us;
There is lots more information that will make you think about the health of the planet and humans and animals. Watch this trailer

Waitangi Day Celebrations: Okains Bay Te Karaka: Adrienne Rewi
Waitangi Day celebrations on February 6 at Okains Bay on Banks Peninsula will once again centre around the Okains Bay Māori and
Colonial Museum. Its 173 years since the Treaty of Waitangi was signed between Māori land owners and the Crown, and it’s the
36th anniversary of the museum, which opened in 1977. Waitangi Day celebrations are the biggest day of the year in the bay and
around 3,000 people attend. This year the museum will open at 10am, followed by a traditional welcome at the marae for officials
and guests. Two beautiful traditional waka, usually on display in a shed beside the river, will paddled up the river at 11.50am and
celebrations will continue with a lunchtime hangi. The museum itself with feature all-day demonstrations of blacksmithing,
breadmaking, early printmaking, tractors and steam engines, black powder shooting, horse and buggy rides, wood carving, saddlery
and much more. Okains Bay is one of the prettiest on the peninsula and its beach – just 1.5km past the museum – is a favourite
with holiday campers, who pitch tents in the pine glade, adjacent to the sand dunes. It’s a terrific place to visit at any time of year
but the Waitangi Day Family Day makes it a great day out. The quaint local store will be open, petrol and diesel available. Entry to
the hangi lunch will be $10 for adults and $2 for children. Meanwhile, the official Ngāi Tahu Waitangi Day celebrations this year will
be held on February 6th at Ōnuku Marae at Akaroa.

Need help with your insurance claims? You might be aware that EQC has set up a mediation service to help resolve disputes. With the complex issues surrounding
earthquake matters, many homeowners are experiencing difficulties in dealing with their insurance claims. Mediation can be
offered as an option if you have not been able to resolve your complaint through EQC Customer Complaints Resolution Team.
Mediation offers an opportunity to sit down with an EQC representative (EQC negotiator) to talk about the issues, to share
information, to look at options and hopefully to make steps towards the resolution of your claims. You will be assisted in your
conversations by a mediator who will facilitate the conversation. The mediator acts as an independent, and impartial third party.
His or her role is to facilitate the conversations between yourself and the EQC representative. EQC mediation service is
independently administered by AMINZ (Arbitrators and Mediators Institute of New Zealand). The service is free to claimants. You
can visit www.eqcmediation.org.nz or call or call 0800 866 334 between the hours of 10.30am to 4.00pm Monday to Friday for
more information. If you are looking for a mediator Chantal Jousserand-Shirley is mediator who lives in Lyttelton and is on the EQC
mediation panel. Chantal has over 13 years' experience as a mediator. She has a degree in psychology and has recently completed a
Masters in Management in Dispute Resolution. She aims to provide an environment that is fair and equitable. You can contact
Chantal Jousserand-Shirley at [email protected] or phone number 328 8219 or 022 618 8532 for more information.

Captain Thomas Track Rockfall Remediation
Christchurch City Council are moving forward with works to progressively remove potential rockfall sources above Captain Thomas Track between January 23 and mid February.
Captain Thomas Track is currently closed and will remain closed during the works.
Please stay clear of this area due to the high risk of rockfall and associated work environment involving drilling and explosives.
We aim to minimise any disruption to affected residents and users of the adjacent walking and mountain biking tracks.
Daily signage will be posted at trail heads to advise the public of our activities.
We thank you in advance for your continued assistance.
Any further questions for Council officers can be directed to [email protected].
If you wish to speak directly with the team please contact Calum McLean on 021 684 895 or email at [email protected].
