Letter to the Editor,

I have recently returned to Lyndoch after 20 + years away from the area.

I was disappointed to see that the Lyndoch Valley Lions club had folded and been amalgamated with the Barossa Lions Club.

In the 1980’s I was involved with the Lyndoch Valley Lions and we were able to provide not only financial assistance but labour to projects within our local area.

We instigated and obtained financial assistance to build the Lyndoch Bowls Club.

We provided financial and labour to

provide a watering system for the Lyndoch Oval.

We provided a paging system for a

local respite home. We organised the Carols by Candlelight

on Lyndoch Oval each year. Working Bees to clean up pensioners

properties.

Locals including Dick Filsell, Claude Ahrens, Bill Balogh, Arthur Jackamann, Jeorg Wiese, Rick Nicholson, Lew Fromm and Graham Raven were members and worked tirelessly for the local community.

I would like to bring back the Lions Club of Lyndoch Valley and continue the work of these community leaders.

If you are interested in becoming a member and assisting the community can you please indicate by emailing me at: [email protected]

or phone 0403 877 447

“Please don’t sit on the fence and watch, why not be a part of

the community”

The Barossa – Heritage, Lifestyle, Opportunity, Prosperity

A majestic revival Standing over 10 metres tall you can’t help but be in awe of the majestic structure that is the Hill & Son Grand Organ. Now restored back to its original 1877 glory, after an intense restoration period spanning 14 years, this pipe organ takes pride of place in the Barossa Regional Gallery, Tanunda. Featuring 2,260 pipes, some in splendid restored colours and gold leaf, there really is more than meets the eye to this grand organ that called the Adelaide Town Hall its home from 1877 to 1989. Steve Kaesler, a Director of the Organ Historical Trust of Australia, said the completion of this authentic restoration project has restored a sense of integrity to an instrument that was pivotal to music making in the Adelaide Town Hall, and indeed South Australia, for over 110 years. The restoration has returned this grand pipe organ back to its rightful place as a living, breathing, sounding instrument once again, in a community where it is being used. “The restoration certainly took a long time and was quite difficult … but it was well worth the energy and the wait,” he said. “The organ is an artefact in its own right, built by Hill & Son, one of the world’s finest 19th century English organ builders. The fact it is located in the Barossa, a community that understands music and history, means that it will be used. That’s a perfect fit! “Nowhere else in Australia is the culture of pipe organs understood more than perhaps in the Barossa. The community has taken a real sense of ownership over this project and become involved in it, which is great to see.” The official unveiling of the completed organ will culminate in a grand opening concert series at the end of August. The three stage concert series will feature eminent Australian organists Dominic Peris-

sinotto of Fremantle and Christopher Wrench of Brisbane. THE CONCERT SERIES

‘Grand Opening Gala Concert’ - Saturday, August 30 at 7.30pm

‘Grand Concert in Town Hall Style’ – Sunday, August 31 at 2.30pm

‘Bach to the Future’ – Sunday, September 7 at 2.30pm - featuring Christopher Wrench. Tickets $25. Tickets are available from the Barossa Regional Gallery, Basedow Road, Ta-nunda or by phoning 8563 3199.

Williamstown Uniting Church Garden Club Madagascar was the topic with guest Christine Baker at the August meeting, and it proved to be a fascinat-ing island, as Christine found after her first visit, returning many times. The island is very wet in North-East parts to much drier near the Western coast, with 12,000 different types of plants and 22 million people. On her power point display we were able to see lemurs, monkeys, apes, great apes all tree climbers, and many beautiful birds. The lan-guages mainly Indonesian and Malagasy, and main reli-gion Protestant and Roman Catholic, with an overlaying of old traditions. Christine had a display of many crafts from there and colourful clothes, which unfortunately we could not fully appreciate as Christine had to leave. Birthday greetings to Marie Bryant, Kim Hemsleigh, Pat James, Bill Hodgson. Best home grown vegetable won by Eve Searle, Joan Reilly, Robyn Denner and lucky raffle winners were Joan, Marion and Marlene. The meeting started with a choice of 3 yummy soups and rolls, and many thanks to the cooks for soup and rolls. Our Christmas outing is fast approaching (a bus trip to secret destination) and Bill needs numbers and deposits from intending attendees. Monday September 1. Meet at Uniting Church at 10am for map, to visit nursery in Littlehampton, morning tea supplied, bring your own lunch and then visit Duck Flat Commu-nity Garden in Mt Barker. September 1st at 10am. Lyndoch

Red Cross News

The people of Lyndoch are invited to help the Lyndoch Red Cross celebrate it’s 75th year of

continuous service on Sunday September 21st. This event will also commemorate 100 years of

Red Cross in Australia.

The day is to be a relaxed fun-filled family day with plenty of amusements to entertain young

and old. The CFS will be running a sausage sizzle and the Red Cross ladies will be selling Dev-

onshire teas but please feel free to pack a picnic and just sit on the lawns and listen to the Ma-

rananga Brass Band, Sounds Familiar Choir and the performances of the students from both St

Jakobi Lutheran School and Lyndoch Primary School.

There will be organised games on the day and some help would be appreciated from the public

to supervise some of these for short periods. The official flag raising will take place at 1.00pm

with dignitaries from all walks of politics and Red Cross officials present.

Please come along any time between 11am and 4pm – or all day if you like - to help celebrate

the great work Red Cross does for the community and the world.

For more information on the above or Red Cross, please phone Malinda on 8524 5353.

Next year, 2015, is the

Terquasquicentenary For Lyndoch

Terquasquicentenary stands for the 175th Anniversary of an event. It's been a massive 175 years since Lyndoch

was settled as a township. Colonel William

Light first set foot in our beautiful area in 1837

and named it Lynedoch Vale. It was in 1840

that people began to set up their homes and

form a township.

The Lyndoch Historical Society and

Community Committee are seeking ideas as to

what events people would like to hold to

celebrate this milestone. It does not mean your

obligated to organise it, although of course any

help is always gratefully received.

Event ideas can be emailed to-

[email protected] or

PO Box 146, Lyndoch 5351

LYNDOCH 1840 Lyndoch, the first settlement in the Barossa, was established by September 1840. ‘The Southern Australian’ of 2nd March 1841 reported: This splendid survey, belonging to the South Australian Company, and of which they were put in possession only in September last, is, we are told, rapidly assuming the appearance of a thriving settlement. Although located upon but a few months, it is said to have a larger population already than Gawler Town – its present number of inhabitants amounting to about one hundred souls. The ring of the anvil – the sound of the carpenter’s hammer – the sawing and splitting of timber in the neighbourhood – and the song of the ploughman on the plains – are said to give it that air of bustling activity. About two hundred acres will be under cultivation in this survey alone during the ensuing season. The spirited manner in which Mr Browne has commenced operations is spoken of in the highest possible terms, and a confident expectation is entertained of his being rewarded with overflowing returns at the forth-coming harvest.
